Minions Movie

I am looking forward to the free showing of the Minion movie, provided by the Gold Coast City Council Saturday 20 February on the school oval. The movie starts at 7 pm, and gates will open at 5 pm. The P&C will be selling food, drink and glow products. A jumping castle will also be set up with tickets available for purchase on the night.

This evening should be lots of fun so bring your own chairs and blankets and hope for good weather.

I hope to see you all there.

Every minute counts

Student attendance is currently averaging 95.6%, which is on target for our 2016 attendance goal of 95% for the year. Just as it is important for all children to be at school every day it is also important for them to be at school all day.

If you are having difficulty getting your child to school on time please contact the relevant deputy, Prep – 2 Mrs Kerry White and Years 3 – 6 Mrs Kelly Ready.

Student Resilience

Resilience is one of the most important skills a parent and a school can teach a child. The ability to cope with the small and big knocks that a child encounters as they grow up will provide them with the essential skills to cope with life’s challenges.

It is important to afford your child the opportunity to make mistakes and to learn from these mistakes. Parents want to ensure that their children are happy, but if they are too overprotective and get too involved in their children’s problems they are denying them of the opportunity to learn and grow.

There is a lot of information available on the internet and at local libraries about developing child resilience. Together we can ensure that your children, are equipped for what their future holds for them.

Car Park

Your child’s safety is of paramount importance to us. Please observe the 5 KPH speed limit in the carpark. This is around the same speed as a person walking. Take care to stay within the speed limit in the streets surrounding the school and take special care at the crossings.

Please observe the ‘Kiss and Go’ rules in the carpark.

  1. Do not leave your car
  2. Do not park for more than 2 minutes

If everyone observes the speed and parking rules your children’s safety can be protected.

Thank you

Before School Procedures

Prior to the 8:50am bell, all students are to wait in the Central Games undercover area where staff are on duty from 8:30am. Parents are welcome to sit with their children outside classrooms, however, students are to remain under the supervision of parents and are not permitted on any play equipment before school.

Instrumental Program

Our Strings and Band teachers have met with students and will begin lessons this week. If your child is in our instrumental program, please ensure the SRS has been paid. Students hiring instruments from the school will not receive their instrument until the hire levy has been paid.

Second Step Program

As a Kids Matter School, Worongary State School will be rolling out The Second Step Program, from Term 2, 2016. The Second Step Program P–6 program is a universal, classroom-based program designed to increase students’ school success, improve peer relationships, and decrease problem behaviours by promoting social-emotional competence and self-regulation. It teaches skills that strengthen students’ ability to learn, have empathy, manage their emotions and behaviors and solve problems.

The program is based in part on the risk and protective factor prevention science framework. Research has consistently shown that children with poor self-regulation and social-emotional skills are at risk for developing problems in school and later in life and that social competence, peer friendships, school connectedness and many of the specific skills taught in the Second Step program protect children from negative outcomes. The Second Step curriculum, is a universal prevention program, and is designed to develop skills that are central to children’s healthy social-emotional development, including self-regulation, empathy, emotion management and problem solving.

As we approach term two, a Parent Information session will be offered.

Each year at the AGM the P&C will seek to elect an Executive Committee that will comprise of:

STUDENT BANKING

Just a quick reminder that Student Banking is back on again every Friday and it’s never too late for your child to join up with our school banking program.

For any children wanting to sign up for banking, the Commonwealth Bank is having a sign up day at our school on 19 February at 8:00am - 9:30am out the front of the Tuckshop. Parents can also visit their local CBA branch with their Drivers Licence and ask to open a new account for a Worongary State School student. Your account will then be opened with your deposit book and further info provided on the spot (your student number will be allocated to you upon first school deposit).

Each deposit made the Commonwealth bank gives back 5% to the school so it is great to see so many students and classes participating in the school’s banking program.

TUCKSHOP

ONLINE ORDERING PROFILES MUST BE UPDATED

This is another reminder for everyone to please update their “Schoolshop Online” ordering profiles with their child’s new class for this year. Updates do not happen automatically. Instructions for how to do this are displayed within bright green boxes on the “Schoolshop Online” Home page before you log in to place your order.

Online ordering with “Schoolshop Online” is our school’s preferred method as it allows us to be able to track those orders and reduces the risk of money falling out of bags.

Please note the following for manual orders:

  • cash payments only are accepted every day no EFTPOS
  • separate paper bags are required for little lunch and big lunch as these items are given out at different times using different baskets. If ordering online, these bags are provided for you, otherwise you will need to send one or two completed bags and money to school with your child
  • write your child’s first AND last name plus their class (eg Jane Smith - Prep Blue)
  • write either little lunch or big lunch at the top of the paper bag otherwise students will be given their order at BIG lunch
  • frozen items (eg ice blocks, frozen fruit juice cups, etc.) are to be collected from the tuckshop by your child bringing back their prepaid bag at either little or big lunch time
  • substitute items may be given if not enough money is supplied or stock is unavailable

***IF YOUR CHILD HAS AN ALLERGY: please ensure that your account profile and/or manual order is highlighted accordingly. You are also more than welcome to also come up to confirm your requirements directly with your Tuckshop Convenor, Jasmine***

Uniform News

Uniform Shop Hours

Please take note of the change to the Uniform Shop hours on Thursdays. We hope that the change of time provides flexibility for parents.

Old Style Uniforms

We have reached the end of our two year uniform changeover period and old style uniforms are no longer acceptable to wear. Any old uniforms you’d like to clear out can be dropped off at the Uniform Shop. Once we finish collecting them all, they will be donated to a needy overseas school.

Seniors Shirts

---ORDERS DUE IN NOW---ORDERS DUE IN NOW---ORDERS DUE IN NOW---

Production of the Seniors Shirts will soon be underway. For those that missed the cut-off date for ordering you are lucky to have a second chance. While we are still finalising the art work, you have the opportunity to place an order. Please have your orders in by tomorrow, Thursday 16 February!! Orders can be placed either online, in person at the Uniform Shop or by simply filling out the attached form and dropping it off.

Remember that this year you are able to order more than one shirt and at a cost of $35.00 per shirt, they’re a bargain!

House Shirts

Remember that we now have House Shirts available for purchase! They look amazing!! The shirts have the school logo on the front and house birds on the back. They are of course available in all house colours: Narairee - black, Karee - white, Nyunga - yellow and Pilleen – red. The cost is $17.00 each.

Online ordering

If you haven’t already used online ordering and would like to give it a try you can register an account with schoolshop online by following the links on the school website.

Key things to note about online ordering are:

  • Online ordering is great for busy parents. Orders can be placed online at your convenience.
  • Any orders placed online will be processed on the next uniform shop day (Monday/Thursday) and a note will be sent to your child’s classroom so they know when they will be able to collect it from the Tuckshop. Please let them know to keep an eye out for the note. Please note that due to Uniform Shop hours being in the afternoon on Thursdays in 2016, orders processed on Thursdays may not reach your children until Friday.
  • Please ensure that you include your child’s details as well as your own on the form ie. name and current class.
  • Please be sure to update your child/children’s class for each new school year.

Pre-loved uniforms

We will buy back the following items in good condition to add to our supply of pre-loved uniforms: new style polos, new style shorts, skorts, pullovers, trackpants and zip-up cardigans.

Regards, Michelle Lee. Uniform Convenor
