Reporting on Student Achievement

This year all report cards will once again be sent out electronically. Please ensure that your email address is current with administration. It is important as parents and guardians prepare to receive the Semester One report cards for 2016, that there is a clear understanding of how we report on your child’s academic, behavioural and effort in the key learning areas of schooling. It is also imperative that we have a common understanding about the expectation of where children should be in accordance with the Australian Curriculum. Please be aware that report cards will be emailed out on 23 June.

What Level Should Your Child Be Achieving

All teachers report to a set of standards as outlined in DET P-12 Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Framework and ACARA.

As you can see from the definitions above, the majority of students are and should be achieving at a C level. This means that they are interacting and achieving at the expected level for their age and developmental capacity.

Academic Awards

At the end of this semester students will be awarded Academic Awards based on the following criteria:

Learning Vine Encouragement Award - C grade or better in the 4 Key Learning Areas of English, Maths, Science and History/Geography

Learning Vine Merit Award - B grade in 3 of the 4 Key Learning Areas of English, Maths, Science and History/Geography, with nothing below a C in the 4th subject

Principal’s Learning Vine Excellence Award - A grade in 3 of the 4 Key Learning Areas of English, Maths, Science and History/Geography, with nothing below a B in the 4th subject

Positive Productive Communications

Please remember that it is important that we continue to build upon the wonderful rapport that has developed between your child, the class teacher and yourself. If you have any questions, concerns or feedback, your first point of communication should always be with the classroom teacher. Most things can be addressed in this manner, and it allows teachers to have the opportunity to build upon their constructive interactions with parents. It also displays an appropriate level of respect to the classroom teacher, who is spending the majority of the day with your child. These productive and respectful communications will continue to support your child’s learning and success at school.

School Disco

The School Disco will be held on Wednesday 22 June. The theme is Comics and Superheros. More information will be provided closer to the date.

Upcoming Camps

The Year 6 camp to Tyalgum will take place on Tuesday 9 - Friday 12 August and all parents should have received an email outlining the camp activities, what your child should bring and the camp cost.

The Year 4 Camp to Currumbin Community Farm will take place in Week 10 of Term Three and parents will receive information regarding this shortly.

Are you Cybersmart?

It is the responsibility of parents to monitor their children’s use of social media sites. Many young people are unaware of the traps of getting involved in social media.

Communicating on Social Media can be a fun and interesting way of interacting with friends and family, but when strangers and organised groups start interacting with your children safety alarms ring. For more information please visit the government Cybersmart page at:

https://esafety.gov.au/?from=cybersmart

Below are excerpts from the most popular social media sites. According to our school records no student at Worongary State School is eligible to hold any of these Social Media Sites. If you would like more information please do not hesitate to contact the school and speak to myself or one of the deputies.

Starting to communicate on social media should be monitored by parents, I liken it to driving a car – at the legal driving we don’t give a child a car, the keys and let them go. We drive with them, we monitor when and where they drive. It should be the same for social media, when they reach the age of 13, not before, supervise their opening of the account, supervise their communication, supervise who they friend and monitor the amount of time spent on media.

If you suspect inappropriate social media or cyber bullying please contact the relevant provider and access support through:

https://esafety.gov.au/complaints-and-reporting/cyberbullying-complaints/i-want-to-report-cyberbullying

Music Department

Instrumental Music

I would like to congratulate the Worongary State School Concert band on their recent awarding of "Silver" at Fanfare 2016. The band was entered into the lowest division as they have been playing together for less than a year, however were moved up a division as their playing was clearly above the standard of the other bands competing in the same division. They certainly played well and the feedback from other music teachers and parents outside of our school was very complimentary and positive. Well done to each student who competed. They will be performing their magical numbers on June 6 assembly.

Music Corner

There has been a lot of excitement in the Music Department with two choirs practising and the Band and String programs rehearsing for performances this term. Please note the following dates in your diaries:

June 6 Senior Assembly performance Lorikeet Choir and Band
June 13 Junior Assembly performance Lorikeet and Rosella Choir
June 14 Mid Year Recital 3:30 - 4:30 Strings, Band, Rosella and Lorikeet Choirs
June 21 Choir Party - 2nd break, Music room
June 15 Band Party - 2nd break, Music room

P&C COMMITTEE

P&C Meeting

The next P & C meeting will be held on Tuesday 14 June at 5.30pm in the staff room. We would love to see as many parents and care givers as possible at the meeting. We value all of your feedback and the P & C meeting is the place to do so. The meetings are also a great place to discuss ideas you may have for the school and fundraising. Come along and get involved in your school. Light refreshments will be provided.

5 Cent Challenge

WOW!!! The response to this has been amazing. With over $1400 raised in just 2 weeks. At last count the 2 classes leading the challenge are 1 Red and 5 Green. We still have 3 weeks to go. Will anyone take the lead from these 2 classes? Keep sending in those 5 cent pieces, although we will accept any coin. All funds raised are going towards building a Senior Playground. Thanks for your support.

Bingo

The response to our new Friday night bingo has been great. This is an ongoing event every Friday night at 7.30pm in the hall. All prizes are cash and it only costs $25 per set to play. Come along, bring some friends and you could have the chance to win up to $20,000 with the link jackpot.

FUNDRAISING TEAM

With the determination of the P & C to get the Senior Playground underway as soon as possible, we have decided to create a team of volunteers to be a fundraising team. Have you got what it takes? If you think you can help out with this, please contact us. Let’s work together to get things done. Our next major event will be the Car Show. We will have a morning/afternoon tea once a month to discuss ideas and events. Together everyone achieves more.

TUCKSHOP NEWS

*ONLINE ORDERING MUST BE COMPLETED BY 9AM*

This is to allow for any payment processing delays. Online orders can be completed days in advance so please take advantage of this option to at least order the night before, for your convenience.

MEAL DEALS

We have some upcoming meal deals planned. Watch this space and keep an eye on your emails and tuckshop signs for updates on exactly what these will be and when they will be available!

FOR STUDENTS TAKING PART IN INTERSCHOOL SPORTS:

Thank you to all students and parents who are remembering to let us know that they need their Big Lunch order early due to travel for Interschool Sports on Fridays (please either include a note on your order or come and see us at Tuckshop on your way to class in the morning, on these days).

We really appreciate being able to ensure that those lunches are ready to go to keep those little tummies filled and bodies energised.

With these Interschool Sports matches and several hot days still ahead of us, please remember that we have plenty of yummy, healthy frozen treats available like:

  • Tubs of Frozen Pineapple pieces and Frozen Grapes for just $1 each
  • Icebergs for 50c each (cubes of frozen yoghurt and fruit)
  • Frozen Orange Wedges for 20c each

These items are all available from both online and manual ordering. If participating in Interschool Sports you will be unable to take part in over counter sales so please be sure to pre order on these days. [*NB: Ice cold bottles of water can be purchased at any time for $1.50]

Things to remember when ordering Tuckshop:

  • Please avoid use of sticky tape and staples. While these help keep your child’s lunch money secure, they slow us down in the mornings (one of our busiest times). If you are concerned about losing money, please fold your child’s tuckshop paper bag multiple times, put it in a zip lock bag or consider ordering online. We thank you for your help in making our job easier.
  • All pre-ordered frozen items ordered (eg, icebergs and frozen fruit juice cups, etc) are to be collected from the tuckshop by your child bringing back their prepaid bag at either Little or Big Lunch time
  • Substitute items may be given if not enough money is supplied or stock is unavailable
  • *** IF YOUR CHILD HAS AN ALLERGY: please ensure that your account profile and/or manual order is highlighted accordingly. You are also more than welcome to also come up to confirm your requirements directly with your Tuckshop Team ***

VOLUNTEERS:

For any Mums, Dads, Grandparents and Carers interested in becoming a Tuckshop volunteer on a weekly, fortnightly or even monthly basis, we encourage you to come visit us and find out more

Volunteering can be very rewarding both for the volunteer and the organisation. There are many different reasons that people volunteer. What’s in it for you? Perhaps one of these:

  • The opportunity to meet new people and make new friends
  • Learning new skills
  • Something to add to your resume
  • Personal satisfaction of knowing you’re contributing to the school
  • Seeing your child’s face light up when they see you in the tuckshop
  • Refreshments
  • And of course, great company (if I do say so myself).

So come and join us in the crazy fun place that is the Worongary State School Tuckshop! We look forward to welcoming new faces!

Kind Regards Michelle Lee Tuckshop/Uniform Convenor

Uniform Shop

**Important Changes**

Remember that the Uniform Shop is now open on the following days/times:

Monday - 8:00am-9:00am
Wednesday - 2:15pm-3:15pm
Friday - 8:00am-9:00am
Direct Dial number: 5502 4409

Price Increase

The P&C always work hard to ensure that uniform price increases are few and far between. After a thorough review of our pricing and after maintaining our existing pricing for many years, the following price increases will take effect Term 3, 2016:

Shorts: From $21.00 to $25.00
Skorts: From 22.00 to $26.00

We have plenty of shorts and skorts currently available so if you’d like to stock up at the current prices, make sure you get in this term!

Winter Stock

Winter is slowly making an appearance and the mornings are getting cooler. We currently have all winter items available for purchase and prices remain the same as last year. Items are disappearing fast though, so get in quick!

V-neck pullovers: $28.00
Track pants: $23.00
Zip-up Cardigans: $37.00
Tights: $7.00

Polo Shirts Delivery

I am pleased to advise that our order of Polo shirts has now arrived and all pre-paid orders have now been delivered to your children! We thank you for your patience and confirm that all sizes are now available for purchase.

Old Style Uniforms

We have reached the end of our two year uniform changeover period and old style uniforms are no longer acceptable to wear. Any old uniforms you’d like to clear out can be dropped off at the Uniform Shop. Once we finish collecting them all, they will be donated to a needy overseas school.

Online ordering

If you haven’t already used online ordering and would like to give it a try you can register an account with schoolshop online by following the links on the school website.

Key things to note about online ordering are:

  • Online ordering is great for busy parents. Orders can be placed online at your convenience.
  • Any orders placed online will be processed on the next uniform shop day (Monday/Wednesday/Friday) and a note will be sent to your child’s classroom via the Tuckshop basket so they know when to collect it from the Tuckshop. Please let them know to keep an eye out for the note. Also note that due to the Uniform Shop hours being in the afternoon on Wednesdays, orders processed on this day can be expected to reach your children on Thursday.
  • Please ensure that you include your child’s details as well as your own on the form ie. name and current class.
  • Please be sure to update your child/children’s class for each new school year.

Pre-loved uniforms

We will buy back the following items in good condition to add to our supply of pre-loved uniforms: new style polos, new style shorts, skorts, pullovers, trackpants and zip-up cardigans.

Regards Michelle Lee, Tuckshop and Uniform Convenor
