Finish Strong
"Don’t count the days; make the days count." Muhammad Ali 1942-2016
In sport we often talk about the importance of finishing strong, whether playing team or individual sports, players don’t give up until the final whistle. This also applies to learning. Tests and assessment may be finished for this semester, but teaching and learning has not stopped. It is still as important to apply ourselves to our job – learning right up until 3 pm on Friday 24 June.
All areas of work and play deserve our best right up until the very last. If I was visiting a dentist or being operated on by a surgeon I would expect that they would treat me with the same enthusiasm and effort at the end of the last day before their annual holiday as they would on their first day back after a happy and restful holiday. I have the same high expectation for all students of Worongary State School.
Dojo Awards
Students are proudly wearing their Dojo badges and working hard to achieve the next level. When I talk to the children they are able to tell me how many Dojos they have earned and how many more they need to get their next badge. Congratulations to everyone who has achieved a badge and I look forward to seeing them achieving their goal.

Every day counts

As we reach the end of Term 2, parents are reminded of the importance of sending children to school every day. Being at school every day counts, with one day absent each week quickly adding up to two months of missed lessons in a year.
Unless your child is ill, it is expected that your child will be at school learning every day of the school year, including the last day of term.
More information on the importance of regular school attendance is available at:

Mid-Year Music Concert
Our music department put on an excellent concert for us on Tuesday afternoon in the school hall. The Band, Strings and Choirs performed to an excellent standard. Pieces performed included:
- Senior Strings playing Scooter Ride, Two’s Company and Siberian Shivers
- Beginner Strings playing Tick Tock, Rollin Along, Carribean Island and Hurdy Gurdy
- Rosella Choir singing Toway (African) and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
- Lorikeet Choir singing Batman, Sing a Rainbow, 3 Little Fishes, Be Kind to your Parents
- Band playing Fanfare and March, The Spook, Tequila
It was great to see so many parents and supporters there. We would like to thank parents for their work in preparing the students, including encouraging regular practice and getting them to rehearsals. We look forward to the concert at the end of the year.

If there are concerns, the clinical nurse will contact parents regarding follow and updates referrals.
Year 2 Beenleigh Historical Society Excursion
Year 2 excursion to Beenleigh Historical Society will take place on July 13 and 14. Students will be investigating aspects of daily life in the past and the present, including the Maid of Sker in Nerang. The excursion will support the Year 2 History curriculum where students are exploring the impact of changing technology on people’s lives and exploring the local community through identifying and exploring a site of historical significance. Payments were due Tuesday of this week.
Junior Sports Day
Junior Sports Day for Prep to Year 3 will take place on July 29 from 9:00am – 1:30pm. Activities will include running races, long jump, high jump and tabloid activities. Parents are welcome to attend and there will be a sausage sizzle available on the day. More information will be provided closer to the day.
Cyber Safety
What is ‘bCyberwise’ and how can you create conversations with your children about cyber safety? We recognise that parents and carers have a pivotal role in supporting children to make safe and healthy choices. If your child did receive the ‘bCyberwise’ session, we are sure they will be excited to tell you all about it. But whether they participated or not, we have suggested some ways as a family that you can help your children practise decision making in the home.
Download the App
Life Education, in partnership with Intel Security, have created a fun, and interactive app, ‘bCyberwise Monster Family’ . Join the Nubbins’ and explore their vast monster castle as they learn how to use the internet safely, protect personal information, recognise a safe website and be positive and respectful online.
Some consistent family rules to consider
- No phones/devices whilst eating dinner
- Always use strong passwords
- Don’t give out personal information over the internet
- Only add people you know and trust in ‘real life’
- Always talk to an adult if you feel unsure or unsafe
- If children do not want to use their devices in the same room as an adult perhaps what they are doing is NOT OK.
- Inappropriate online behaviour which disrupts the good order and management of the school or brings the school into disrepute can be dealt with under the Worongary Responsible Behaviour Plan
School Disco
Due to a clash of date with game 2 of the State of Origin, the School Disco will now be held on Wednesday 20 July. The theme is Comics and Superheros.
Reporting on Student Achievement
This year all report cards will once again be sent out electronically. Please ensure that your email address is current with administration. It is important as parents and guardians prepare to receive the Semester One report cards for 2016, that there is a clear understanding of how we report on your child’s academic progress, behaviour and effort in the key learning areas of schooling. It is also imperative that we have a common understanding about the expectation of where children should be in accordance with the Australian Curriculum. Please be aware that report cards will be emailed out on 23 June.

What Level Should Your Child Be Achieving
All teachers report to a set of standards as outlined in DET P-12 Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Framework and ACARA.
As you can see from the definitions above, the majority of students are and should be achieving at a C level. This means that they are interacting and achieving at the expected level for their age and developmental capacity.
Positive Productive Communications
Please remember that it is important that we continue to build upon the wonderful rapport that has developed between your child, the class teacher and yourself. If you have any questions, concerns or feedback, your first point of communication should always be with the classroom teacher. Most things can be addressed in this manner, and it allows teachers to have the opportunity to build upon their constructive interactions with parents. It also displays an appropriate level of respect to the classroom teacher, who is spending the majority of the day with your child. These productive and respectful communications will continue to support your child’s learning and success at school.
Upcoming Camps
The Year 6 camp to Tyalgum will take place on Tuesday 9 - Friday 12 August and all parents should have received an email outlining the camp activities, what your child should bring and the camp cost.
The Year 4 Camp to Currumbin Community Farm will take place in Week 10 of Term Three and parents will receive information regarding this shortly.
Academic Awards Ceremony Semester 1
Parents are invited to the Academic and Sports Awards Ceremonies on Monday 20 June. Seniors, Years 3-6, start at 9.30 am and Juniors, Years Prep-2, at 2.00 pm. Students receiving a Principal’s Academic Excellence Award will be presented on stage, an invitation is being sent home. Students receiving a sporting award will also receive an invitation today.
Congratulations to all students receiving an award.

STUDENT RESOURCE SCHEME 2016
Thank you to all those parents who have made their Term 2 Instalment on time. We have a number of parents who have not adhered to their commitment as per the signed SRS Participation Agreement. Any parent with outstanding SRS Term 2 Instalments will now need to contact the Business Services Manager to make arrangements for their student resources for Semester 2 due to non-payment of the Term 2 instalment.
Students with overdue SRS payments are unable to participate in excursions and/or activities, including the school disco.
Reminder to those parents who are paying their SRS Term 3 Instalments by credit card that these will be processed on Friday 22 July 2016. Unless you are on an approved Payment Plan all Term 3 instalments are due by Friday 22 July 2016. Payment can be made at any time over the internet using the following bank details and description:

RI Activity Books were issued to all these students so that their participation in the RI class activities would not be limited. There are a number of parents who have not paid the $6.90 invoice for RE and it is hoped that these invoices could be paid this term.

CURRICULUM AND PEDAGOGY COACHES

Last Wednesday, lots of noise could be heard coming from the hall as staff engaged in launching Worongary State School ‘s Reading Framework. It looked like a game of Trivial Pursuit as teachers moved around colour coordinated tables to share ideas around reading.
The complexity of the reading process and the importance of what literacy research shows to be the “Big Six”, namely-
- Oral language – the ability to speak and listen
- Phonological and phonemic awareness – the ability to hear and manipulate the sounds in oral language
- Phonics – the relationships between letters and sounds
- Comprehension – understanding what is being read
- Vocabulary – new words and what they mean
- Fluency – the ability to read quickly and naturally, are the essential skills for the development of competence in reading, writing and spelling, they must be taught systematically and explicitly. The teachers had fun sharing ideas on how this practically applies in a classroom situation.

Book Fair
Although we didn’t beat last year's record, we still received just over $2000 of free books for the Library - absolutely awesome. Thanks again for your fantastic support, and a special thanks to our guest, the Very Cranky Bear (you know who you are). All outstanding orders should be received by this Friday 17 June.

Phone Books
Thanks to those people who have sent in their old phone books. I still need about 20 more, so now you have a new one, can you recycle your old ones to the Library? Thanks in advance.
Library Books
Holidays are drawing near, so borrowing will cease for the Term at the end of this week. Can you please ensure that your child has returned all their books before the end of Term? Thankyou.

SPORTS DESK

This Friday sees the culmination of the interschool sport rugby league season for another year. 2016 has been a mixed year for Worongary on the football field with some emphatic wins coupled with some heartbreaking losses. Titans National Youth Competition superstar Joshua Rogers has enjoyed his first coaching endeavour with the year four side. His team has been progressing well only suffering two losses and are pushing for a grand final spot. Standout performers include Jodeci H, Cody M, Tuariki W and Jayden S. Meanwhile, the year five side coached by experienced stalwart Mr Oakley haven’t enjoyed the fruits of on-field success this season but have seen plenty of improvement in a playing squad with limited previous rugby league experience. Key players amongst the group include Jack F, Luka S, Waylyn T and Izayah P who all led by example and will be key figures in next year’s team. Finally, the year six side overcame two tight losses at the beginning of the season to steam toward a potential grand final spot this week. Coached by fellow Titans NYC player Samuel Swift, the year six’s have demonstrated a high level of dedication and discipline which has shown in their recent results. Despite heaping praise on the team as a whole, Swift singled out co-captains Reico R and Kyen M as being instrumental in the team’s consistently impressive performances. Ultimately, despite the mixed results, all coaches have been impressed with the level of passion and commitment shown by all players involved and are pleased to see so many kids playing the greatest game of all.

P&C COMMITTEE
As President of the P & C I would like to thank the community members that always attend our meetings.
Meeting dates for the rest of this year are as follows. All meetings are at 5.30pm in the staff room.
Tuesday 12 July
Tuesday 9 August
Tuesday 13 September
Tuesday 11 October
Tuesday 8 November
I would like to encourage all parents/caregivers to attend the meetings. Ms Moballe attends every meeting and is happy to discuss any issue that arises. However, individual student issues are best discussed privately.
The P & C is not about constant fundraising. The P & C is consulted on school budgeting, Behaviour Management Policy, advised on Educational issues and school incidents. The P & C also runs the weekly school banking, the Tuckshop and the Uniform shop. The year 6 graduation night is also funded by the P & C.
Fundraising at a State school is a necessity. Without fundraising there would be no new resources, no playgrounds, etc.
In previous years the P&C raised the funds for the Prep Playground that is now fully operational. We are now fundraising to build a playground for the seniors.
Fundraising events each year will include the Muscle Car show, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day stalls, sausage sizzles at sporting events, tea and tissue morning teas, discos for 2 terms and kiosk at bingo. Other fundraisers may include chocolate drives, trivia night, raffles etc.
With all this in mind we are constantly looking for help from the school community. If you can volunteer to help at any time please let the P&C know. It’s your school, let’s all get involved.

5 Cent Challenge Update

With the 5 cent challenge almost over, we would like to say thank you. As a joint effort from all classes we have raised just over $2000. There is 1 week left and the race for the lead is tight. In senior school we have 3 Red, 3 Green and 5 Green in the top 3 classes. In junior school there is 1 Red, 1 Yellow and 2 Green in the top 3 classes. The question is which class will come first? Which class will win the Baskin Robins ice cream party? Will one of the other classes come from behind to take the lead? Don’t forget that any coin can be donated, it doesn’t have to be just 5 cent pieces.
Bingo
Bingo is held every Friday at 7.30pm in the hall. Cash prizes. Come along bring your family and friends. Bingo will be held during the holidays.

Positions Vacant
We are still looking for 2 more passionate people to join our P&C executive team. The positions available are Vice President 2 and Vice Treasurer. If you think you have what it takes please contact us.
