Thank you to all the parents who have completed our requests for explanation of student absences.
Every day counts at school
The Department of Education and Training has developed a range of free resources to promote the importance of going to school, every day.

Research shows that school attendance leads to positive student outcomes, and can help children to build social and emotional skills.
The new Every day counts resources, developed with the input of Solid Pathways students, includes an animation, comic book, posters, as well as tips to help encourage students go to school every day.
Check out the new resources and see if you can spot some of your favourite NRL footy players â visit the Every day counts website .

Nationally consistent collection of data on school students with disability
The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) is a joint initiative of all Australian governments and all state and territory government and non-government education authorities. This national data collection occurs annually.
Teachers use their professional informed judgement to identify:
- which of their students are being provided with reasonable adjustments to address a functional impact due to a disability as defined by the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA)
- the level of support
- the broad category of disability
- The level of adjustment that students with disability are being provided must have been occurring for the long term (10+ weeks) in the 12 months preceding the national data collection
No additional assessment or formal diagnosis is required for a student to be included in the national data collection. Schools use their existing evidence to support their professional judgement for the inclusion of students in the national data collection.
Purpose of the data collection
The NCCD will help to present a more reliable, consistent and transparent view of students with disability across Australia. This improved information will help education authorities and schools better understand their learners, target programs and make resourcing decisions that contribute to more effective outcomes and quality learning experiences for all students with disability.
The national data collection process:
- assists in developing school teams' knowledge and understanding of the DDA and their obligations under the Disability Standards for Education 2005 (DSE)
- provides an opportunity for schools to review their learning and support systems and processes to continually improve education outcomes for students with disability.
Car Show 2016
The car show was a great success with a record number of beautiful cars being displayed. Congratulations to the P&C and the Muscle Car Club for organising such an excellent event. The weather was perfect for the day and a good time was had by all. A special thanks also to the staff and volunteers who helped on the day, these generous people manned the BBQ, Drinks, Raffle and Jumping Castle stalls.
Congratulations to the winners of the various sections of the Car Show, I personally found it too difficult to choose a winner and congratulations and thank you to all the winners of the various raffles.
Respect our Staff, Respect our school
The Respect our staff, respect our school campaign has just been released and aims to create safer and more respectful communities in Queensland state schools. The message to the entire school community is clear;
Violent or abusive behaviour will not be tolerated in our schools. It's not just a courtesy. It's the law.
We all have different beliefs, expectations and experiences, so there are inevitably going to be times where conflicts or disagreements occur in schools.
How we handle those conflicts can make a significant difference to the learning and development of our students and the positive environments we aim to foster.
The safety of our students and staff is the number one priority and everyone in the community plays a part in ensuring learning environments are safe.
The campaign is part of the Queensland Government's commitment to tackle the issue of violence and continue to provide a safe and supportive learning environment for all students and school staff.
All members of the community are encouraged to work together to prevent abuse and violence directed towards school staff.

If you completed the training at the beginning of the year, there is no need to attend the upcoming session.

'Sam' the NAO Robot - Engages students at Worongary State School!
'Sam' the NAO robot a 58-cm tall robot approached and engaged students of all ages. Assisting with the development and progress of science and technology education, NAO robots have revolutionary applications for healthcare, rehabilitation and special education. From primary school and special education to research, NAO assists with the development and progress of thousands of school children, university students, and researchers.
The team at 'Brainary Interactive' introduced Worongary State School Year 5 and 6 students to this technology by demonstrating the NAO robot 'Sam'. The students were thrilled to see Sam first hand, listen to voice commands and dance on request.
Here is what some students thought about 'Sam'.
Sam was a really intelligent, adorable and amazing dancer. I think he was awesome by his colour changing eyes and how he can move in different ways. He could show emotion and dance. He is really unique and special. Khira and Hayley -6R
I enjoyed Sam because it was a lot of fun as well as learning new things. I learnt that programming is not that hard. I would be interested in coding one day because it wouldn't be that hard now we've learnt about it. Jack 5Y
I enjoyed the robot demonstration because I'm thinking about being a programmer when I'm older. I also learned some more about programming and coding. Jonathan 5Y
I enjoyed the session with Ross and Sam because we got to understand what coding does to our lives. We also got to experience Sam do an action that Worongary State School is the first school to witness. Angeline 5/6W
I think the robot was really funny especially when he 'dabbed'. The best part was when he was doing the dance and he played my favourite song named Thriller. It was also cool how he sensed when you were moving and moved his head to you. Stavros 5/6W

2016 NAIDOC WEEK CELEBRATIONS- Songlines
In week 2, we celebrated NAIDOC Week, a time to acknowledge our Aboriginal and Islander history and culture. Students and teachers worked together to create traditional art pieces and NAIDOC poems. These were displayed in the hall foyer and became a wonderful back drop and point of conversation for our indigenous community. Our Resource Centre displayed a vast range of traditional stories for students to enjoy. In addition, Joshua Fauids, one of our Gold Coast Titans staff, visited Prep classes to share his personal experiences. Joshua is a proud Torres Strait Islander and although he was born and raised in Brisbane, his family is from Coconut Island. NAIDOC Week culminated with our assembly, where we heard the sweet sounds of the Rosella and Lorikeet choir while accompanied by Mackenzie Hess, performing a welcome dance. Thank you to all for a successful and memorable 2016 NAIDOC Week.
NAIDOC WEEK
Being Safe at School
Student resilience and wellbeing are essential for both academic and social development and this is optimised by the provision of safe, supportive and respectful learning environments. Worongary State School shares this responsibility with the whole community.
Not only do confident, resilient children with a capacity for emotional intelligence perform better academically, these skills can also contribute to the creation of strong social bonds and supportive communities, and the maintenance of healthy relationships and responsible lifestyles. Together we are helping students develop capabilities which promote health and wellbeing and lead to success in life.
Our behaviour focus for the term is "Taking Pride in our School". We have discussed the importance of being in the correct areas. This ensures your children can be seen by a teacher or staff member, they are in the correct area in the playground, before school and at break times, and after school they immediately make their way to their pick-up area or walk safely home.
Please take the time to discuss these issues with your children as their safety and well-being is our priority.
Prep Enrolments 2017
Prep is filling up fast for 2017, with only a few spots remaining. Could all parents who have children who are starting Prep next year please ensure that you have completed the necessary enrolment forms available either from the Worongary State School website or from the front office. Please phone and make an appointment with me so we can meet to make sure we provide your child with the best start for the schooling next year.
Out of catchment parents are asked to submit an application in writing to be considered for enrolment. Depending on vacancies, these applications will be considered in the order in which they are received, but no guarantee is given that a place can be offered.
Welcome back Mrs White.
Mrs White welcome back to Term 3. We trust that you have enjoyed your Long Service Leave. A special thank you to Mrs Taylor who very ably accepted the role of Acting Deputy Principal for the first 3 weeks of this term.
STOP PRESS – NAPLAN
NAPLAN results have arrived at the school. Year 3 and Year 5 students will bring their individual reports home with them by this afternoon (Wednesday 3 August). Our results this year are very pleasing and when the final data is published they will be available on the MySchool website.
Congratulations to all students for their outstanding efforts and thank you to staff for their continued hard work in ensuring our students are well prepared and confident to perform well in these national tests.

Phonics Hero.
Give your child the phonics advantage! The students in Prep to Year 2 have been given the opportunity to trial an online program called Phonics Hero for a month. The programme covers everything from sounds, to reading, to spelling to full sentences.
Phonics Hero uses structured gameplay for the fastest, most effective way to turn your child into a reading hero. Students have log on details to use at home.

Book Week August 22 – 26 This year's theme: Australia: Story Country
Our annual Book Week celebrations kicks off in Week 7, with our main focus on Grandparents' Day on Wednesday August 24.
Worongary State School Art Gallery – in the Hall. All classes will create an art display (visual or media) based around this year's theme, using either a book by an Australian author, a book about Australia, or an Indigenous themed book. The gallery will showcase either students' individual works, or a combined class display. Please feel free to browse in the hall throughout the day, but your children/grandchildren will be giving you a 'guided tour' at a specified time.
Students are asked to dress up as a book character. We will not have a formal group assembly, due to space constraints in the Hall (where our main attraction, Worongary School Art Gallery has been set up). Instead each class will hold a class parade in the Prep quadrangle (between F block and G block) at a time to be announced when details have been finalised.
Celebrations start at 9.15am and continue throughout the morning. Our choirs will be providing 'pop-up' entertainment at a couple of venues around the school, so keep your eyes (and ears) peeled.
After your child's class parade, you will be taken on a tour of the Art. The Library will also be open to peruse the Book Week displays and colouring competition entries.
Tea and coffee will be available at the Tuckshop and your child's class teacher will let you know where and when morning tea is to be held.
On Thursday 25 August, all classes will visit the Hall for some special Book Week activities and stories.
Nerang Library staff are also visiting the school on Tuesday 16 August for the year 4, 5 and 6 students Book Week activities.
Book Club Issue 5
Orders closed last Friday and books should be back by mid next week (week 5).

Regards Jann Connor, Librarian & Technology

Tuckshop
Busy times
Wow, where have the last two weeks gone? In the Tuckshop and Uniform Shop they have flown past! We have been extremely busy with our regular Tuckshop/Uniform Shop duties as well as assisting the P&C with the planning and execution of the Car Expo and Chocolate Drive fundraisers.
Last Friday was especially busy. Jasmine and I would like to send out a HUGE thank you to first time Tuckshop volunteer Narelle and our regular volunteers, Lizzy, Monique and Tara who all popped in to give us a hand in between watching their children participate in the Junior Athletics events. With so much going on we couldn't have got through the workload without you. Thank you so much for giving your time to help things run smoothly.
Tuckshop News
Friendly Reminders
I would like to remind you all of few important things:
- There are no EFTPOS facilities in the Tuckshop. Cash only over the counter and Online ordering is available as the alternative to cash.
- NO CREDIT: As per P&C Qld regulations, we are unable to provide credit to anyone and thank you in advance for not asking, as refusal may offend. We are however able to accept payments in advance, to hold on account, in preparation for those days that just won't run smoothly.
- NO LUNCH: If for some reason you realise that your child has no lunch at school e.g. forgotten to order online/child left lunch at home then you have the option to either bring your child some lunch or arrange for a family member to do so. If neither of these options are feasible, your child will be sent to the school admin office who will contact you to arrange for a basic emergency lunch to be provided to your child. Please do not call the Tuckshop directly.
- As a Tuckshop servicing a school of just under 800 students, we are very busy – especially with our new breakfast menu on the horizon. If you choose to order tuckshop manually, it would be very helpful if children could put orders in the tuckshop baskets in their classrooms rather than dropping them off to the Tuckshop before class, as many have been doing lately.
Canteen Week
Canteen Week is an annual event organised by ASCA (Australian School Canteen Association) as an opportunity to celebrate Tuckshops and to say a big thank you to the staff and volunteers who are essential to making our canteen run smoothly and efficiently. This year Canteen Week runs from Monday 8 – Friday 12 August, coinciding with the Rio Olympic Games.
Canteen Week Celebrations
The following events will be taking place to celebrate Canteen Week.
- A variety of 'Olympic' themed Meal Deals will be available. Please see the attached flyer for details.
- Some special guests will visit us in the Tuckshop to help hand out frozen treats at big lunch…you may like to order a frozen treat next week so you can see them.
- Finally, we will again be giving our students the chance to participate in celebrating Canteen Week with exciting competitions. Details for these will be emailed out shortly so get your artistic talents ready.

Uniform News
Opening Hours
Jasmine and I would like to thank everyone for embracing our new Uniform Shop opening days and times. After a full term of the new hours I think we can confidently say that they are a success.
House Shirts
The recently held Athletics Carnivals saw many house shirts walking…or were they racing?... out the door. So wonderful to see so many students wearing their house shirts with pride, and even a couple of parents as well.
Hair Accessories
In the near future we will have hair accessories available for purchase from the Uniform Shop. Products will include hair ties and clips in school colours plus something a little special in house colours for sports event days. Watch this space.
Online Ordering
If you haven't already used online ordering and would like to give it a try, you can register an account with Schoolshop Online by following the links on the school website.
Key things to note about online ordering are:
- Online ordering is great for busy parents. Orders can be placed online at your convenience.
- Any orders placed online will be processed on the next uniform shop day (Monday/Wednesday/Friday) and a note will be sent to your child's classroom via the Tuckshop basket so they know when to collect it from the Tuckshop. Please let your child/ren know to keep an eye out for the note. Also please be aware that due to the Uniform Shop hours being in the afternoon on Wednesdays, orders processed on this day can be expected to reach your children on the following Thursday.
- Please ensure that you include your child's details as well as your own on the form i.e. name and current class.
- Please be sure to update your child/children's class for each new school year. The account profiles for Tuckshop and Uniform shop are not linked.
Regards Michelle Lee, Tuckshop and Uniform Convenor
