Finish Strong
"Don’t count the days; make the days count." Muhammad Ali 1942-2016

In sport we often talk about the importance of finishing strong. Whether playing team or individual sports, players don’t give up until the final whistle. This also applies to learning. Tests and assessment may be finished for this semester, but teaching and learning has not stopped. It is still as important to apply ourselves to our job – learning right up until 3 pm on Friday 23 June.
All areas of work and play deserve our best right up until the very last. If I was visiting a dentist or being operated on by a surgeon I would expect that they would treat me with the same enthusiasm and effort at the end of the last day before their annual holiday as they would on their first day back after a happy and restful holiday. I have the same high expectation for all students of Worongary State School.
Prep 2018

Prep placements for 2018 are filling fast. Please ring to make an appointment for an interview to ensure that we include your child in our 2018 enrolments. Families who live outside Worongary State School catchment are able to apply for enrolment if they currently have a sibling enrolled at the school. If you have special reasons to be considered for enrolment please make a written application explaining your reasons for wanting to be considered. Out of catchment children are accepted into Worongary SS in the order the applications are received.
A Prep information session will be held in the school hall on Tuesday 18 July 5.30 pm – 6.30 pm. Everyone is welcome to attend to find out more about Worongary State School.
Attendance

It is pleasing to see a slight increase in student attendance. Please ensure that your child attends school every day. The best chance of success at school is to attend every day. Our goal is for every student to attend at least 95% of the time. If your child is sick they need to stay home and get well, but apart from that they should be at school every day. It is not only the best for them, but it is the law. Please help us to help your children. If you need some help to get them to school please contact us. Students who achieve 95% or greater attendance are recognized each semester.

Curriculum Corner

Hello again
I hope you have been enjoying some good books with your family. This week I have included some tips from Tania Poultry. These tips are also applicable for advanced readers.

Also, remember the five finger rule when helping your child choose a text. Open the book to any page and ask your child to read. Put up a finger every time your child does not know a word. If you have put up more than five fingers before the end of the page, then this book is too hard for your child.
As I have stated before in previous newsletter articles, I believe family time is really important. Why not make reading part of this valuable time with your children? Here are some tips for integrating reading into our daily family activities:
- Read bedtime stories
- Play a board game.
- Visit your local library.
- Read a recipe and cook something yummy together!
- Create a comfy reading space in your home.
- Put your child in charge of writing and reading the grocery list.
- Sharing the newspaper on the weekend and discussing articles.
- Research an item together on the internet. eg: a type of pet, sharks, Alaska etc. – whatever is of interest to your child.
- Write a letter to a relative or friend – reading and writing go together hand in hand!
The most important thing when reading is making sense. Remember if your child is only reading words on the page, then they are not really reading. We need children to understand what they are reading. Even fluent, advanced readers can lack understanding when reading texts. It is important that children realise this and stop and self-correct. A valuable tool and skill for your child to master for life.
Until next time………. Happy Reading
Kind Regards Leslie Ward, Head of Curriculum

Questioning Reading
Successful readers need a bank of reading skills and strategies, motivation to read, access to a wide variety of texts and authentic opportunities to read both inside and outside of school. The culminating goal of reading is comprehension and this week in my article I’ll unpack a few key points to assist you in assisting your child with their reading development.
Children need confidence and enjoyment when reading, a positive attitude towards reading goes a long way! Confidence comes with reading texts that are interesting to them. They need to build reading stamina, familiarity and fluency with the books they choose to read. But we also must start to expose children to more complex and harder texts. We need to help them monitor their understanding of what they are reading and a way to do this is asking text dependent questions.
Text dependent questions are specifically posed questions about a text that require children to return to the text to find evidence to support their ideas or opinions. When reading new or more difficult texts with children, it’s the questions we can ask that lead them to develop a deeper understanding of the text. During reading, we should be stopping frequently to ask questions, to make sure the child understands what they are reading. They then need to refer back to the text for the answer.
Below are some ideas to guide the questions you may ask during or after reading:
- General understanding: What is the main idea of this page? What’s the overall idea of the text?
- Key details: Asking who/what/ when/where/why/how questions that are essential to understanding.
- Vocabulary: Ask questions that give the meaning of the word in the text. Focus on words or phrases around that word to support its meaning.
- Author’s purpose: Draw the reader’s attention to genre, point of view and different perspectives.
- Inferences: Examine the indirectly stated ideas, arguments, or key details in the text.
- Opinions and arguments: Use their foundational knowledge to make connections to other text using ideas from the text in their answer.
Asking text dependent questions to lead a child towards a deeper comprehension of the text is hard work. But the only way to get better at something is to practice! So next time you’re reading with your child, ask them some questions that make them find the answer in the text.
Kind Regards Tom McDonald, Teaching and Learning Coordinator

From the Classroom 3M & 3Y

The children in 3M and 3Y had fun using natural resources to create a landscape collage. The students have been studying Jeannie Baker, an award winning author and illustrator of children's picture books. She uses a mixed media to create detailed and elaborate collages in her books.
The children created their own masterpieces.

Student Council – Give Me 5 Kids

Give Me 5 for Kids is a national fundraiser which has been supporting and raising funds for local children’s hospital wards across Australia for the last 20 years.
Each June, our local radio and television networks get behind the cause by holding local fundraising events. Gold FM will be joining us this year and broadcasting live from Worongary State School on the morning of Wednesday 14 June. In order to raise much needed funds for the hospitals we will be holding a free dress day to coincide with the event. All money raised will go to Give Me 5 for Kids. More details will follow shortly.
Thanks to the open hearts and generosity of the public, Give Me 5 for Kids continue to raise more funds annually for our local children’s hospital wards, and make a real difference to the lives of sick local kids.
