From the Principal

Welcome Back to Term 3

Welcome back to our students and families for term 3. This is shaping up to be a very busy term with excursions for Preps, Years 1 and 2, as well as camps for Year 4 and Year 6. Ms Moballe is taking leave for term 3 and I will be taking on the role as Acting Principal. Mrs Ready will continue in her role of Deputy Principal for the Senior School and we are currently in the process of appointing an Acting Deputy Principal for the Junior School. Thank you to Mr McDonald for stepping into this role for the first two weeks of term.

Our school review — an opportunity to have your say

Our school is scheduled for a school review from September 5 – 7. The Department of Education and Training regularly reviews Queensland state schools to ensure they’re delivering quality education to students. The reviews are conducted by the department’s School Improvement Unit.

The reviews do not rate or compare schools, but provide teachers and other staff with independent feedback to help them continue to improve learning outcomes for students.

All schools have a review at least every four years. Key findings from the review will be made available to parents and the community on the school’s website.

The review team would like to hear from our school community and I encourage anyone who is interested to have their say. Your feedback is important and will help us continue to deliver a great education for students. Feedback can be provided to the review team by phone or in person. All feedback is confidential.

Please contact the school office if you are interested in speaking to a reviewer. Alternatively, you can register your interest by emailing SIUMB@det.qld.gov.au More information about the review process is available from the department’s website at:

http://www.schoolreviews.eq.edu.au/

Prep 2018 Enrolments

A reminder to parents who are enrolling their children into Prep at Worongary State School in 2018 that interviews are now taking place. If you have not yet handed in your enrolment documents and made an appointment for an interview, please do so to ensure you receive updated information as we head into our transition activities.

Playground Updates

We are currently in the middle of two major projects to update the Junior Adventure Playground, and create a new Senior Adventure Playground.

Junior Adventure Playground

Our new retaining wall is nearing completion and the contractors are beginning to restore the surrounding areas to their original state. We are still currently unable to access the playground area, but have been working to investigate ideas for revamping existing equipment and purchasing new elements to add into the playground. Some ideas we are looking at include a wooden boat for imaginative play and building a new sandpit in this area. We will keep you informed as completion dates are confirmed.

Senior Adventure Playground

Our P&C have been sourcing ideas and quotes for developing a Senior Adventure Playground in the area between the Music Block and the Multi-Purpose Courts. Student Councillors have been asked to share their ideas and we now have a very good idea of what this should look like and the types of equipment the students would like to see included. Our next step is to seek quotes for our design, then select a company to complete the work. We are hoping that installation will be completed by the end of this term.

NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC Week is celebrated each year in July with celebrations this year falling within the second week of the school holidays. Worongary State School students will celebrating NAIDOC Week in Week 2 of Term 3. This year, the theme is “Our Languages Matter”. To celebrate our local language, students in Years 3 – 6 will be using the Yugambeh Language Program to create Haiku Poems. Our Junior school will be learning about bush tucker plants and their uses.

We will be holding special assemblies to mark NAIDOC Week on Friday 21 July. Senior Assembly will be held in the hall at 9:15am and Junior Assembly at 2:15pm. Parents and carers are welcome.

Behaviour

In term 3, students will be continuing to participate in an explicit Positive Behaviour for Learning lesson as well as a social skills lesson from the Second Step program. These lessons will be held once per fortnight.

Air Conditioning

Thank you to parents and carers who responded to the survey about air conditioning and have indicated that they will support fundraising efforts to air condition our learning areas. We have now received a quote that has provided us with a scope of works and a ball-park price that we can start to work towards. A meeting for parents will be held in the coming weeks to share with you the overall price of the project, to decide on an installation plan, and to explain fundraising activities that will be taking place. Please keep an eye out for an invitation.

Attendance

It is important that all students are attending school unless there is an acceptable reason such as illness or family/cultural commitment. The beginning of the term is when teachers revisit classroom expectations and give students preliminary work to form the basis of learning that will be taking place throughout the term. Therefore, this is a very important time in the term.

The graph below outlines the number of students who have been absent over the first week of Term 3, with the blue showing how many of those are still unexplained. We now send out daily SMS messages that parents can reply with the reason for absence.

Please remember that Every Day Counts in your child’s education.

Student Council

Student council will be organising Jeans for Genes Day on Friday 4 August. We encourage everyone to don their denim for this great cause. A gold coin donation is all that is requested. There will also be Jeans for Genes Day coloured pencils on sale for $1.00 per pack, with all funds raised going to J4G. One in twenty children are born with a birth defect or genetic disease – on average, that’s one in every classroom affected. We believe that is one child too many. Research is critical in ensuring every child has the opportunity to live a long and healthy life. Your school’s support will help us beat childhood disease. Worongary State School has their own profile page at:

http://www.jeansforgenes.org.au/fundraiser/worongary

This is a great way for your students to share with friends and family to let them know we are raising money for Jeans for Genes Day.

Read and Grow

We had a fantastic time last term learning all about being lost and found! We looked for things in rice, bears in cakes and watched bubbles fly up into the sky. We had great fun doing craft activities like making masks, cooking and painting while talking to our parents and Katie about the book and the activity. We also learnt lots of new songs and listened for words that start with the same sound at the start like book and bed and at the end which we learnt are called rhyming words. Katie showed us her treasure box when we read Russell and the Lost Treasure. It had lots of interesting things in it but they weren’t gold and jewels. We talked all about how treasure is different for everybody! Whilst Katie targets children 3 – 5 years old, we had lots of little brothers and sisters running around the room helping us with our work too.

If you would like to be part of the fun, please come to the Prep Maroon Classroom next Tuesday 25 July at 9 am. The program runs for the rest of the term – but you don’t have to attend every session! And the best thing about it is – it’s FUN and FREE!

Regards Mrs Katie Huggard, Prep Maroon Classroom Teacher

1-2-3 Magic and Emotion Coaching

Worongary State School is pleased to offer parents the opportunity to attend 1-2-3 Magic and Emotion Coaching Program.

The 1-2-3 Magic and Emotion Coaching is a practical program which aims to teach parents how to deal with their children’s difficult behaviour by using an easy-to-learn and easy-to-use signaling system. The signaling system requires the parent to use less talk and less emotion, which in turn encourages the development of children’s ability to manage their emotional reactions to parental boundaries.

Where: Worongary State School Hall
When: Each Thursday from Week 4 – 3 August to Week 8 31 August 9:00-10:15
Duration: 1 hour and 15 minutes each week for 5 weeks
Cost: $16.00 (normally costing $120)

Presented by Joanne Jackson.

Zambrero Meals

On the last day of Term 2, the Zambrero’s Mexican Lunch Day took place. Thank you to those who embraced this event and got their orders in on time to join in on this new venture. The food was wonderfully delicious and tasty! Despite the planning that took place, the day did not go quite as planned as we experienced delays in the delivery of some orders. We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by this and ask you to feel free to give us some feedback on the experience. Although not as successful as we’d hoped we are still looking at running similar days for the last day of each Term, to try out different themes. Suggestions appreciated.
