Road Safety to and From School
We have had a number of students involved in accidents on scooters on the way to school over the past couple of weeks. This is a timely reminder to students about road safety and current laws regarding helmets. Please see below an extract from the Department of Transport regarding current laws for the wearing of helmets on bicycles and foot scooters. More information can be found at:
https://www.qld.gov.au/transport/safety/rules/wheeled-devices
Bicycle helmets
When you ride a bicycle, motorised foot scooter or a personal mobility device like a segway, you must wear an Australian Standard (AS) approved bicycle helmet. You must securely fit and fasten it. An approved bicycle helmet means a helmet that complies with AS 2063 or AS/NZS 2063.
You may only carry passengers on your bicycle if the bicycle is designed to carry passengers. If you carry a passenger on your bicycle, they must also wear an approved helmet, securely fitted and fastened. However, if they are a paying passenger on a 3 or 4 wheeled bicycle, they do not have to wear a helmet.
You do not need to wear a helmet if you have a doctor's certificate stating that, for a specific amount of time, you cannot wear a helmet:
- for medical reasons
- because of a physical characteristic that makes it unreasonable for you to wear one.
If you have a doctor's certificate, you must carry it with you when you ride without a helmet.
You also do not need to wear a helmet if you are a member of a religious group and are wearing a headdress customarily worn by your group, which makes it impractical to wear a helmet.
Skateboards, foot scooters and similar
Wheeled recreational devices include rollerblades, roller skates and skateboards, foot scooters and motorised foot scooters.
A wheeled toy is a child's pedal car, scooter, tricycle, or similar toy used by a child under 12.
Rules for wheeled recreational devices
You're not legally required to wear a helmet when using wheeled recreational devices (other than motorised foot scooters). However, to reduce injuries you should wear protective clothing such as an approved helmet, knee and elbow pads, and wrist guards.
Most devices don't need to be registered to operate on Queensland's road network.
If you're travelling on a wheeled recreational device or wheeled toy you must not:
- travel on a road with a centre line or median strip, or a 1-way road with more than 1 marked lane
- travel on a road with a speed limit greater than 50km/h
- travel on a road at night—but you may cross a road while riding your wheeled recreational device by the shortest route. If you need to ride at night, you can ride your wheeled recreational device on a footpath
- travel alongside more than 1 other person or vehicle travelling on a road in the same direction, unless you are overtaking
- cause a traffic hazard by moving into the path of a driver, or unreasonably obstruct the path of any other road user.
If you're travelling on a wheeled recreational device or wheeled toy you must:
- keep to the far left hand side of the road, and to the left of a footpath (including a shared path)
- give way to foot pedestrians on a footpath (including a shared path)
- give way to bicycles on a bicycle path.
Get Set for Prep
Parents who have enrolled their child for prep 2018 will be receiving an invitation in the next couple of weeks to attend Get Set for Prep. This transition program helps beginning students to become familiar with the school environment and the types of learning activities they will be participating in in Prep. There will be 3 sessions each Thursday for 5 weeks, starting 19 October. Please look out for the invitation and RSVP by the due date.
Gold Coast Eisteddfod
I had a wonderful opportunity to accompany Lorikeets Choir to the Gold Coast Eisteddfod on Monday with the result of Commended. I would like to congratulate Mrs Hapi and the students for the excellent performance. The students were very well behaved and were great ambassadors for our school. Congratulations also to the Rosella who performed in the afternoon with the result of Highly Commended.

ICT Use by Students
It has been reported that we have had some students using other students’ log on and emails. This is a timely reminder to all students that we need to follow the guidelines for using computers at the school. Internet should be used only for educational purposes and we should never give out our password to anyone. In classes where students share a common log on, students are not to access other people’s emails at any time. Please see the link below to find out more about cyber safety, including tips for student, tips for parents and information regarding social media.

STUDENT RESOURCE SCHEME 2017
The due date for SRS payments this year was Friday 16 June. Thank you to those families who have paid the SRS in full for their children. We have a number of parents who have not adhered to their commitment as per the signed SRS Participation Agreement. For the remainder of this year any student with outstanding SRS fees will not be eligible to attend excursions, camps and payable school activities including Inter-School Sport.
On Monday 14 August, students with unpaid SRS fees will have their access to the scheme suspended until full payment has been made as per Section 29 of the Participation Agreement.

How did you go finding arrays around your home, in your neighbourhood and at the shops after the last newsletter?
Here is another opportunity for developing mathematical thinking, which adults and children can enjoy ……… especially the eating part!
In the kitchen
Getting the children in the kitchen is a favourite holiday or weekend activity for many families. The pride and enjoyment children get from baking cookies or helping prepare the family meal are invaluable. Mathematical knowledge and processes are a fundamental part of this experience.
Measuring quantities accurately is crucial if you want the cake to rise. Actively discussing this with children brings the importance of this mathematic concept to life.
Develop curiosity by presenting problem-solving opportunities:

We need 1 cup of sugar, but we have only these ¼ and 1/3 cups to measure with. What can we do? And then ask again: Great idea! What else could we do?
How much pastry do we need for four pasties?
Knowing that there is often more than one way to solve a problem provides comfort for those who think in different ways. Using scales to weigh ingredients reinforces the skill of reading these numbers and draws on knowledge of decimals. Calculating when the food will be ready uses knowledge of time, but also encourages basic number strategies, like counting by 5s, to be practiced:
The recipe says ‘chill for 30 minutes’. It’s 11.50am now, when will it be ready?

Fractional concepts are developed when cutting the cake into equal parts. Every child wants their fair share of that chocolate cake!
Happy cooking!
There will be some more ideas in my next article.
Kind Regards Leslie Ward, Head of Curriculum
Music Corner

Congratulations to the Band on their excellent performance on Thursday night. A special thank you to Ms Cindy Ashton and all her hard work.
Congratulations to the Lorikeet and Rosella choir for their performance on Monday. A big thank you to both choirs excellent singing on Grandparents Day. There were a lot of grandparents who spoke to me after both choirs performances that they were delighted to hear the children singing and the students looked amazing in their Book week characters.

Read and Grow
We had a fantastic time learning all about being lost and found! We looked for things in rice, bears in cakes and watched bubbles fly up into the sky. We had great fun doing craft activities like making masks, cooking and painting while talking to our parents and Katie about the book and the activity. We also learnt lots of new songs and listened for words that start with the same sound at the start like book and bed, and at the end which we learnt are called rhyming words. Katie showed us her treasure box when we read Russell and the Lost Treasure. It had lots of interesting things in it but they weren’t gold and jewels. We talked all about how treasure is different for everybody! Whilst Katie targets children 3 – 5 years old, we had lots of little brothers and sisters running around the room helping us with our work too.
If you would like to be part of the fun, please come to the Prep Maroon Classroom next Tuesday 5 September at 9:00am. The program runs for the rest of the term – but you don’t have to attend every session! And the best thing about it is – it’s FUN and FREE!
Regards Mrs Katie Huggard, Prep Maroon Classroom Teacher
The ICT Young Explorers competition on Sunday was a big success. All students were enthusiastic and focused on pitching their projects for the judges. All six Worongary teams created attractive booths to showcase their projects. I’ve attached some pics of the kids in action.

RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION
Could all parents/caregivers please complete and return the Religious Instruction consent forms that were sent home to families in early July. We still have many outstanding. Please click on the link to access a new form otherwise your student may collect one from the office.
