Junior Playground Update
We were hoping to have our Junior Adventure Playground open by the end of this term, however we have run into a problem with the drainage. We are currently in negotiations with the contractors to fix water pooling in the back corner, and hope to have this rectified soon. Thank you to Mr Townson and Mr Bryden who have been busily replacing broken and rotting timbers and painting the existing equipment so that we can open our playground as soon as the drainage problem is fixed. We will be looking forward to the new equipment going in hopefully towards the end of term 4.

Science Competition
STEM Report: Gold Coast Schools Science Competition
On August 31 over 20 Worongary students from years 4, 5 and 6 exhibited work at the Griffith University Gold Coast Schools Science Competition. This annual event is the largest competition of its type in Queensland. Students submitted a range of projects covering a range of topics including rainforest eco systems, dreams, plant growth, athletic performance, space and a solar powered toothbrush.
With over 500 entries it was a huge honour for two Worongary students to be recognised at the awards ceremony. Rylee J (4B) received a 2nd place in the years 3-4 communicating science category for her project Buzzing Off. Jack R (6Y) received a Highly Commended for his Anglerfish in the years 5-6 communicating science category.
We look forward to returning to the competition in 2018.

Keep Our School Safe – a message from Qld Police
School holidays are almost upon us. During this period empty schools provide an opportunity for criminal activity, becoming targets for unlawful entry, arson, stealing, graffiti and property damage – all of which become a cost to the community.
The School Watch Program is a partnership between Education Queensland, the Queensland Police Service and the State Government Protective Security Service. It aims to reduce criminal activity in Queensland schools and encourages everyone to look out for after-hours crime in our schools.
If you see anything suspicious, please don’t attempt to intervene. Call the School Watch number – 13 17 88
Let’s work together to help create safer school communities.
If you have information for police, contact Policelink on 131 444 or provide information using the online form 24hrs per day.
You can report information about crime anonymously to Crime Stoppers, a registered charity and community volunteer organisation, by calling 1800 333 000 or via the following link 24hrs per day.

Finance
NEW PAYMENT METHOD
From Tuesday, 3 October 2017 Education Queensland schools will no longer be able to accept Credit Card payments over the phone or take card details for processing on the next payment day as this is not Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard compliant.
To make credit card payments for school invoices, please use either QParents or BPoint.
If you have not already joined QParents, please accept the invitation that has been emailed to you. The turnaround time for approval is approx. 24 hours, after which time you will be able to view information pertaining to your child including invoices awaiting payment and details about invoices previously paid using QParents.
The option to pay invoices over the phone using BPoint IVR (Interactive Voice Response) is also available, however invoice details will be required. Parents call 1300 631 073 and enter their CRN, amount and credit card details to complete payment. At the end of the call you will be provided with a unique payment receipt number.
Please remember that late payments will not be accepted. Invoices not paid by 10am on the due date will be deleted and not available for payment.
STUDENT RESOURCE SCHEME 2017
The due date for SRS payments this year was Friday 16 June. Thank you to those families who have paid the SRS in full for their children. We have a number of parents who have not adhered to their commitment as per the signed SRS Participation Agreement. For the remainder of this year any student with outstanding SRS fees will not be eligible to attend excursions, camps and payable school activities including Inter-School Sport.
On Monday 14 August, students with unpaid SRS fees will have their access to the scheme suspended until full payment has been made as per Section 29 of the Participation Agreement.

Curriculum Corner

Hello Again Everyone
I hope you have found some time to do some cooking with your children since my last article in the newsletter. I know how busy everyone is these days, so if not, the school holidays are fast approaching and it is the perfect time to try out some new recipes.
Here is another opportunity for developing mathematical thinking, which adults and children can enjoy!
At the shops
When you are out at the shops, there are plenty of ways to get children thinking about and exploring mathematics. Many of us use plastic to pay for our groceries, etc. and our children do not get to handle money as we did when we were young. It is important that children handle money, play with it, recognise the coins and notes, understand their values and practice counting/ adding up amounts and giving change for $1.00 etc. Simple counting exercises with young children are a great way to reinforce early number concepts like number sequences and cardinal numbers.
What are cardinal numbers?

Cardinal numbers (or cardinals) are numbers that say how many of something there are, such as one, two, three, four, five.
It answers the question "How Many?"
Example: there are five coins.
or
1, 2, 3, 4, 5. We have 5 apples in the bag.
Another number concept easily practised at the shops is comparison:
Do we have more apples or oranges?
How much change will you get if you buy 10 apples?
As parents, we often choose the item that represents better value by comparing the “price per 100 gram” - verbalising your thinking helps children to refine their own mental processes. Budgeting, adding monetary values and calculating change are all skills that benefit from practice in a real-life situation.
Giving older children $10 and a small shopping list develops these skills as well as fostering a sense of independence. I know we do not even want to think about Christmas yet, however there are already mince pies at the shop! The post-Christmas sales give children some purposeful reasons to apply knowledge of percentages, if only to convince you that new toy is a real bargain!
Parents can easily use every day experiences to reinforce and develop mathematical skills and support their children’s learning of this important subject area. Showing how mathematics is used in daily tasks provides the perfect balance for the formal learning of the classroom. Mathematics is an area where both teacher and parent input is necessary.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe and relaxed school holiday break.
Until next time …....
Kind Regards Leslie Ward, Head of Curriculum
Basketball Report
Basketball Round 1
The 2017 basketball season kicked off on Friday afternoon with the Worongary boys and girls teams hosting Mudgeeraba at home. Our junior boys and junior girl’s teams featured a number of new players playing competitive basketball for the first time. It was great to see the players encouraging each other and working together throughout their games. While neither junior team won it was great to see the players having fun on the court. Elise W and Latham McK were the players of the match.
Both our senior girls and boys teams featured a mix of year 5 and 6 players and a mix of new and returning players. Both teams were able to come away with convincing wins but most importantly the players worked well together, spreading the scoring across the team and making contributions on offence and defence. Tyler C was the senior boys player of the game using his rebounding and passing to involve his team mates. Jayda T H played a fantastic all round game and was the girls team player of the match.

Music Corner

Congratulations to the Lorikeet choir for singing so beautifully at the Eisteddfod and obtaining a Highly Commended certificate. The choir will be recognised for their participation and excellent achievements at the Eisteddfod in term 4 junior assembly. Certificates will be given to the students at their regular choir rehearsals.
Congratulations also to the Rosella choir for their excellent performance and obtaining a Very Highly Commended certificate. Again like the Lorikeet choir, they will be recognised for their performance at the Eisteddfod in senior assembly term 4 and each student will receive a certificate in their next choir rehearsal.
Finally, congratulations to our excellent Band for obtaining a Highly Commended for their performance under the direction of Ms Cindy Ashton. It has been an exciting term.

Instrumental Music - Band
It is that time of the year again when we do recruiting for the instrumental music band Program for 2018.
There will be a demonstration by the Concert Band for all students in year 3 and interested students in years 4 and 5 on Wednesday 11 October during class time (12.40pm - 1.40pm). This will give the students an opportunity to look at all the instruments, hear what they sound like, and discuss what we do each week in lessons and band.
I encourage as many children as possible to put an interest form in for the band program for 2018. Forms will be handed out at the demonstration, and will need to be returned for testing in the following weeks. Offers will go out before the end of the year with all the information. There are some instruments that can be hired through the school as well.
Any questions please do not hesitate to email me casht28@eq.edu.au
Yours Musically.
Regards Cindy Ashton, Instrumental Multi
Speaking Out Competition
“The right word may be effective, but no word was ever as effective as a rightly timed pause.” – Mark Twain
Week 9 brings to an end yet another very successful “Speaking Out” Competition at Worongary.
Teachers and students alike were delighted by well written and rehearsed speeches in class and at the Finals in the hall. Our judges had a hard task to award the best speech for each year level. Public Speaking is an incredible skill and we are always in awe of the courage and range of topics presented each year. Well done to all of those involved!
