From the Principal

I sincerely thank the many parents who are taking the time to join with your child’s class teacher this evening to celebrate your child’s many wonderful achievements during Term 1. These parent / teacher interviews provide an opportunity for your child’s class teacher to share your child’s individual literacy and numeracy goals while also outlining the areas that your child has performed well in during Term 1. I encourage any parent who was unable to attend our Term 1 interviews to contact your child’s class teacher and arrange an alternative time. By working together, we will make a much stronger and connected school community.
2018 Commonwealth Games
The Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018 are coming 4-15 April 2018! This is the biggest sporting event to come to Queensland in decades and we all have a vital role to play in the success of GC2018. We need to plan ahead and be prepared to change our usual transport habits, especially those trips made by car or on busy routes during peak times.
Get Set for the Games is dedicated to providing you with the all the advice and information you need to ensure you're well informed to make the best decisions for your travel needs in the lead up to, and during the Games. During the Games, we all have a part to play in helping ease congestion on our roads. The goal of the Get Set for the Games website is to reduce demand for particular travel modes and routes and spread our trips across the transport network.
One way you can contribute to the success of our Games is to “Rethink” your schedule during the Games. The Gold Coast will be extremely busy during the Games, so rethink any non-essential car travel like gym, shopping, appointments and get together. Stay local or travel during off-peak periods, so you're not caught out by the crowds.
More information on road closures and events can be found on the Get Set for Games website or alternatively by downloading the Official 2018 Commonwealth Games App.

Free Dress Day
On Friday March 23 Student Council will be having a free dress day.
The theme for the day is the Commonwealth Games so come dressed as your favourite athlete or in the colours of the team you will be supporting.
Please bring a gold coin donation. All money raised will go towards sending the second donation of books to Kingstown Preparatory School in St Vincent and the Grenadines. Unfortunately, due to the country’s location postage is very expensive, so if you can spare a little extra that would be great!
Book Drive
Once again we would like to support Kingstown Preparatory School, our adopted school in St Vincent and the Grenadines.
They are still seeking to increase the size of their library and we are asking for donations of books to help them do this.
Books can be new or good quality second hand ones, suitable for primary school aged children.
Please send any donations to 4B (modular H).
National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence
The National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence is a day for schools, students and the community to say Bullying. No Way! Bullying is complex. Knowing exactly what bullying is and understanding why it happens are critical to finding positive and lasting solutions for everyone involved.
Students can play various roles within the bullying dynamic. Understanding the peer group is central to understanding bullying. Some students seem to be more likely to be involved, depending on the school and the broader context. At Worongary State School we understand that bullying of any form or for any reason can have long-term negative impacts on everyone involved, including bystanders.
Intervening appropriately to respond to or prevent bullying is very important. Dealing with bullying involves tapping into their motivations and understandings of the social situation. The reasons for bullying are often found below the surface by investigating issues of power, norms and social status, tolerance and diversity. Exploring these areas and how they influence students' interactions and behaviour can provide essential insights into the most appropriate responses by parents and carers, and the school.
I acknowledge and appreciate the key role that parents and other carers play in preventing and responding to bullying. Parents and carers are encouraged to support our school to implement a proactive response to addressing bullying and violence by:
- Learning what bullying is and what it is not. This is the first step in talking about how to prevent or respond to bullying with your child. 'Bullying' is a word that is used for lots of things that are not actually bullying. These other behaviours may be just as serious, but may require different responses.
- Talking about bullying with your child at home to make it easier for them to tell you if something happens. Make sure they know what bullying is and how they can respond. Help prepare your children to prevent online bullying and to know what to do if it happens.
- Starting when your child is young to guide them to develop the social and emotional skills they will need to build positive relationships throughout their lives, including problem-solving skills.
- Recognising the warning signs of bullying. Although there may not be an issue, you should talk to your child if you have any concerns. Raise the topic generally if you don't want to ask directly. Be aware that many times children and young people won't ask for help, so it is important to know what to look for.
- Learning about how to respond appropriately if your child tells you about bullying. You can reassure your child by remaining calm and being supportive.
- Finding out as much as you can about what has happened by talking calmly with your child. A good understanding about what has happened can also help you in communicating with your child’s class teacher about the situation.
- Reading about strategies that can help. Practising strategies at home with your child is a good way to prepare them to use them at school.
- Contacting the school if bullying has occurred and the school needs to be involved.
- Getting involved in what your school is doing to prevent bullying.
School Attendance
Attendance is one of the most important performance measures in our school. Attending school not only provides opportunities for students to obtain essential literacy and numeracy skills, it truly sets children up for future success. I am pleased to report that all year levels last week achieved above 91% and two Year Levels (Prep and Year 3) exceeded 94%. Our teaching staff and I sincerely thank all parents for supporting our school in our quest to achieve our attendance target of 95%.
Junior Playground Update
Last week’s heavy rain has delayed the installation of our new junior playground. Anyone who was in this area during the drenching rain would have seen firsthand the importance of ensuring our sub-surface drainage was included in the scope of works. After speaking to the contractor this morning, we hope that this work will commence on 20 March. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience this is causing for our junior students and wish to reassure all parents that we are doing everything within our control to prioritise this work.
Investing for Success
In 2018, the Australian Government has made available, an additional investment in Students First initiative funding to Queensland for State Schooling. Our Investing for Success funding has been founded upon a needs-based method. This methodology better directs funding to students and schools requiring the most support. All State Schools use Investing for Success funding to support students, particularly those most in need, to achieve improved outcomes at all levels of schooling.
At Worongary State School, this funding will be used to:

Parents of children with medical conditions, please advise the class teacher in writing before the day if special consideration needs to be given. If your child is asthmatic please ensure they bring along their medication.
We also strongly encourage all parents, caregivers and family members to come along and support their children on the day. Students will remain in class until their event is due to run. To support student learning siblings are not permitted to leave class to watch their brother or sister run. It is expected that all students will return to class after they complete their event. We hope to see you all there.

Nerang RSL Helping Hands Initiative
Nerang RSL & Memorial Club understands how hard it is for community based groups to raise funds for many different projects. To assist with community fund raising efforts, the Nerang RSL have come up with an initiative to help members raise funds for their group while they relax and enjoy themselves at the Nerang RSL & Memorial Club.
Purchase a main meal to the value of $16.50 or more from Gallipolis’ Bistro and Bar on any Monday night for dinner and your chosen group will receive $5.00. Worongary State School and Worongary State School P&C have jumped on board this great initiative and would like your help. Have a night off from cooking, head to the Nerang RSL for dinner on a Monday night and help us raise some money!
Movies under the stars- Saturday 17 March
Bring the kids and enjoy a family night (this Saturday) out under the stars watching Cars 3. Entertainment starts from 4:30pm with the movie starting at 7:00pm. Food stalls will be available on the night. We hope to see you there!
