From the Principal

Over the past few weeks a number of parents have met with me regarding Marilyn Moballe’ s health and my subsequent position as the principal of Worongary State School. The Department of Education understand and values consistency in its leadership and therefore while Marilyn is on leave I will remain as your school’s principal. Information will be shared with our community as soon as the school has been updated on her health and wellbeing. Our thoughts remain with Marilyn while she continues to return to full health.
Semester 1 Awards Ceremony
Next week we will once again have the pleasure of acknowledging the outstanding achievements of many of our student in Years 1-6 during Semester 1. We will formally celebrate our Year 1 and Year 2 students’ Semester 1 achievements on Monday 25 June at 2:15pm while our Year 3 to Year 6 students will come together for their ceremony on Thursday 28 June at 9:15am. We cordially invite all parents to join with us to congratulate these students who have excelled in their studies of the Key Learning Areas of English, Maths, Science, History and Geography. Students who have consistently achieved a high standard in the same Key Learning Areas will be presented with an Academic Merit Award.
Worongary’s Got Talent
Last week we had the pleasure of seeing our first Worongary’s State School Got Talent competition final. This event was co-ordinated by our music teacher Ms Katheryn Jones. During this term Ms Jones has been conducting auditions to narrow the finalists to just 11 acts. These acts were performed for our students last Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. The high quality of performances ensured the audience were mesmerised and thoroughly entertained. I wish to acknowledge the following students for their courage and commitment in delivering their fantastic performances. These performances were simply amazing – well done. Congratulations to:

I sincerely thank Katheryn for her dedication to our students and her efforts to showcase the performing arts in our school. Finally I wish to thank the many parents who also supported this initiative. Whether it was by purchasing costumes or just giving reassuring and calming advice, your support made this year’s event a tremendous success. Thank you to everyone who contributed to our very first Worongary Got Talent event.
Bunnings Community Project

On Monday, the students in Year 4 and 6 who attend our behaviour support program worked co-operatively to make and fly kites. The students were very excited, as many had not made or flown kites before. The students designed their kites and carefully listened to instructions, then put the frames together and attached the tails. The oval was a sea of colour and squeals of delight were heard. The students also made mosaic coasters. Some of the students suggesting they will be perfect for your coffee cups.
We would like to thank Bunnings Nerang for the generous donation and Mr Alan, the community liaison for assisting our students.
Air Conditioning Project
Last year the Worongary State School Parents’ and Citizens’ Association conducted a survey regarding the level of support our community has for air conditioning our student’s classrooms. Overwhelmingly, more than 95% of the respondents supported this project and a subcommittee was subsequently formed. At last week’s meeting, Mrs Linda Nordin provided a very extensive report on the progress of this committee. I sincerely thank Linda and the members of this committee for their tireless commitment to improving the learning environments for all of our children.
Over the past few days all parents have received information about business package and tax deductable donations. The committee was committed to offering these packages to the businesses within our school community before opening it up to the broader Nerang community. If you would like to obtain additional information about these packages I would encourage you to email the P&C Association at pandc@worongary.eq.edu.au
With the end of financial year almost upon us it may be an appropriate time to consider making a tax deductable donation to the association’s air conditioning building fund. Parents wishing to find out more information on how to make this donation should refer to Quicklinks on the school’s Website.
Uniform Policy
As we near the end of the first semester, we have noticed that some students are choosing to wear non-uniform items to school. This has included jewellery, hats and shoes. I seek the support of all parents to ensure your child attends school each and every day wearing the correct uniform. The way a child dresses him/herself influences his/her behaviour. Worongary State School, in conjunction with our Parents’ & Citizens’ Association, have introduced an appropriate dress code. This has been implemented to:
- Promote a sense of identity and pride within our school community
- Promote equality amongst students
- For student security. School uniforms mean students are easily identified.
Children are required to wear the correct uniform each day. The uniform is expected to be kept in a clean, neat and correct fashion. It is inappropriate for undergarments to be visible. (ie boxer shorts, long sleeve shirts, etc). Should students be unable to wear the uniform due to an unusual circumstance, parents are asked to send a note with an explanation with the student that day. Students who breach the uniform code will be issued with a warning. Repeat offenders will partake in a disciplinary program (see ‘Uniform Breach Code”).
During the school holidays, parents may need to buy new school shoes for the second semester. This is a timely reminder of the styles of shoes which are acceptable as part of the school uniform. Our uniform policy states:
Shoes are to be kept neat and tidy. Shoes are to be made of leather or vinyl (no canvas shoes). White ankle socks MUST be worn with shoes. For safety reasons, laced shoes must be tied tightly. Laces are to be the same colour as the shoe. All parts of the shoe must be black, including soles, eyelets and motifs. Shoes and socks MUST be worn at all times unless instructed by a teacher. Slip-on shoes are prohibited due to health and safety.

The New Child Care Package – Nerang Alliance
Parents who currently have a child attending a childcare service would be aware that from 2 July, the federal government is moving to implement the New Child Care Package. This package includes a new Child Care Subsidy, which replaces the current Child Care Benefit and Child Care Rebate. From early next month, rebates will be paid directly to your child’s early childhood care centre. The level of rebate a family will receive will be influenced by three factors:
- Combined family income
- Activity level of parents
- Type of child care service (inclusive of outside school hours care).
The Nerang Alliance of Schools wish to support parents through this process – in particular the Activity Test. Parents who are looking for opportunities to learn new skills and volunteer in a local Nerang school are encouraged to clink the link below and register to participate in the Nerang Alliance – Family Assist Initiative.
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/NerangChildCarePackage
Parents wishing to obtain additional information about this initiative are encouraged to contact our school.
Assessment and Reporting
End of Semester 1 Report Cards have now been completed. As per previous years, these reports will be emailed to all parents on Wednesday 27 June. We welcome parents making contact with the class teacher to obtain any additional information regarding these reports. I sincerely thanks the teaching team for their commitment to producing these informative reports and trust all parents will value the information contained in these reports.
Fundraising
Term 2 has been a very big term for fundraising at Worongary State School. I wish to acknowledge and thank all members of our school community for your generosity. My appreciation of this generosity is extended far beyond purely a financial one. I wish to sincerely thank the following businesses who kindly donated to the school’s trivia night raffle prizes and trust you will join with me in supporting their business next time.

Behaviour

Encouraging our children to develop resilience
Social competence
- Resilient children tend to be responsive, socially adept, capable of initiating and sustaining close relationships with adults and peers, and able to show appropriate empathy. They have good communication and conflict resolution skills, and possess a healthy sense of humour. To teach sharing, set up a co-operative activity in which children have to share a limited set of resources.

- To teach fair play, provide instructions on how to play fairly, then get children to play a game (e.g. snakes and ladders), during which children can be reminded of the rules. Rewards can be provided to those who played well.
- Use role plays to practise various skills, such as ignoring a person who is teasing you, or approaching a group or person to ask to join a game.
Problem-solving skills
The resilient child is typically able to think creatively and flexibly about problems, to make plans and take action on them. They are able to ask adults for help when needed, and show resourcefulness in dealing with problems.
When children experience social problems, such as conflict with a friend, or rejection by a group, it is often tempting for parents to jump in and try to solve the problem for them. However, except in situations involving bullying or other unacceptable behaviour, it is generally better to assist children to solve their own social problems rather than intervening directly. This can be done by asking children to think of ways that they might be able to deal with the situation, providing feedback on their ideas, and perhaps offering some suggestions, then encouraging them to try out the best options. In this way, children can learn a sense of social mastery through finding that they can deal with a difficult situation without direct adult help.
Autonomy
Resilient children show a healthy degree of independence, are able to think and act autonomously from adults, and are able to reflect critically on their environment. They have a well-developed sense of their own identity and believe in their own ability to effect changes in their environment
Optimism
Optimism encompasses the sense of having a bright future, a tendency to see challenging situations in positive terms, and a belief in one's ability to deal with whatever life brings.
- Help children to realise that their feelings and responses to events are not caused just by the events themselves, but also by the way they think about these events (their 'self-talk').
- Help children to practise identifying their self-talk in situations from their own lives.
- Help children to identify their recall of events and then challenging the accuracy of their beliefs.
- Help children to generate alternative, more optimistic explanations for the same events.

We also need children to keep negative events in perspective through a process of examining their 'what-next beliefs'. This involves:
- Assisting children to look at the best and worst possible outcomes of an event, and estimate the likelihood of each. This process is used to help them to arrive at a 'most likely' outcome.
- Helping children to develop the problem-solving skills they need to deal with the most likely outcome.

Curriculum
Reading is an ideal way to interact with your child whilst supporting their learning and reading development.
To support the variety of reading activities that children engage in at school, parents and care givers can visit the ‘What works’ section of the Autism Hub and Reading Centre’s website:
https://ahrc.eq.edu.au/resources/what-works/reading
Additional resources can also be located on Literacy and numeracy – parent resources. This Queensland government webpage provides ideas on how to engage children in reading at home.

From the Year 2E Classroom
2E is really enjoying learning about life cycles this term. A big thank you to our wonderful parent who donated the caterpillars and cocoons for our class to watch as they hatch.

From the Year 3A and 3B Classroom
Throughout Term 2, 3A and 3B have been studying our Earth, its movement and how the movement effects our daily lives. Student’s efforts have been tremendous! They spent quality time and showed an enormous amount of enthusiasm to share what they have learnt on a poster.

Wanted Bottle Tops
3A would really appreciate any bottle caps (water bottles, milk bottles, soft drink bottles etc) of any colour or size, to be donated to our class for a project we are hoping to do for Book Week. Please send your collections to the 3A classroom.
