From the Principal

At Worongary State School, staff provide multiple opportunities for our students to participate in extra-curricular activities. Examples for these activities include drawing club, STEM Club and Science Club. Earlier in the term several students from Worongary State School’s Science Club submitted entries in the 2018 Gold Coast School Science Competition. It gives me great pleasure to congratulate the following students who attended the award ceremony at Queensland Academies to receive their prize.

I wish also to thank Mrs Buttigeig for her work with the Junior Science Club and Mr Tim Mullaly for his leadership of our Senior Science Club. These teachers here work tirelessly to ensure our students are challenged and extended. We thank them very much for their dedication and commitment to our school.
NAPLAN 2018 Reports
As mentioned in previous editions of the school’s Pipeline our year 3 and year 5 students are to be commended for their outstanding achievements in this year’s NAPLAN assessments. Our school’s approach to extending students in their reading has resulted in more than 56% of our Year 3 students and 48% of our Year 5 students achieving in the upper two bands in their reading. These results confirm that our committed to improve reading outcomes for our students has supported them to achieve their potential.
The school has recently received each individual student’s 2018 NAPLAN Assessment Report. Parents of students in year 3 and year 5 should have received a copy of their child’s individual NAPLAN Report late last week. Parents wishing to obtain additional information are encouraged to contact individual class teachers.
Prep 2019
Over the past few weeks, Mrs White and I have had the privilege of meeting with all of our 2019 Prep students and their parents. With more than 100 Prep students already enrolled in our school for next year, the future of our school is looking extremely positive. If you, or someone you know, has a child ready to start Prep in 2019 and have not yet enrolled, please make sure enrolment papers have been handed in at the office as soon as possible. An interview or meet and greet will be scheduled once the school has received and processed the application form. As places in Worongary State School’s 2019 Prep program are filling fast, we encourage all new and current families to promptly return these enrolment forms.
Our Prep Expo is scheduled to commence in the Prep Playground on Thursday 20 September. This event will begin at 9:30am and conclude by 11:00am. The Prep Expo is a new event on our school’s calendar. This event will provide our 2018 Prep students with the opportunity build their leadership skills by partnering with one of 2019 Prep children. Students will participate in a number of small activities while also having the opportunity to explore the Prep Playground. I look forward to witnessing firsthand our 2018 prep students’ leadership skills.
Our final Prep Transition event will be the implementation of the Get Set for Prep Program. Mrs White is currently finalising this program and all invitations for this year’s program have been emailed out. Parents wishing to accept a place in this program are encouraged to reply to the email or alternatively contact the school on 5502 4444 or email the office at office@worongaryss.eq.edu.au by 12 October 2018.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
During term 3 our school staff have been working with our students to ensure they take pride in our school. Key messages covered this term have included:
- Behaving appropriately
- Looking after school property
- Looking after the school/Classroom environment
As we move into the final term I seek the assistance of all parents to support our school by speaking to your child about our school’s Behaviour Focus. It is my clear intention to ensure we finish the school year with the same level of learning intensity as the first term. Your ongoing support during term 4 will ensure all of students learn in a safe, supportive and disciplined learning environment. Key messages covered in term 4 include supporting students to better understand what it means to be a good friend. Key messages covered next term will include:
- Respecting other people’s feelings
- Respecting other people’s property
- Play fairly

Keep Our School Safe – a message from Qld Police
School holidays are almost upon us. During this period empty schools provide an opportunity for criminal activity, becoming targets for unlawful entry, arson, stealing, graffiti and property damage – all of which become a cost to the community.
The School Watch Program is a partnership between Education Queensland, the Queensland Police Service and the State Government Protective Security Service. It aims to reduce criminal activity in Queensland schools and encourages everyone to look out for after-hours crime in our schools.
If you see anything suspicious, please don’t attempt to intervene. Call the School Watch number – 13 17 88
Let’s work together to help create safer school communities.
If you have information for police, contact Policelink on 131 444 or provide information using the online form 24hrs per day.
You can report information about crime anonymously to Crime Stoppers, a registered charity and community volunteer organisation, by calling 1800 333 000 or via the link below 24hrs per day.

Term 4 Important Dates
Term 4 will commence on Monday 8 October. Due to senior syllabus requirements, all schools in Queensland will have a Pupil Free Day on Monday 22 October. The final day of school for 2018 will be Friday 14 December.
It is essential that all students attend school each and every day during term 4. During these ten weeks, teachers will be continuing to collect evidence that will be used to inform each individual student’s Semester Two Report Card. Poor attendance may place additional pressure on the students and limit the evidence teachers can collect to validate their results. Your assistance to ensure your child attends school each day (and on time) is greatly appreciated.

Speaking Out Competition

Teachers and students alike were delighted by well written and rehearsed speeches in class and at the finals in the hall. Our judges had a hard task to award the best speech for each year level. Public speaking is an incredible skill and we are always in awe of the courage children show and the range of topics presented each year. Well done to all of those involved!
