From the Principal

Dear Parents,

Last Wednesday I represented Worongary State School at the annual Nerang State High School Investiture Ceremony. During this ceremony Mr Ison and the school community acknowledged the students who had accepted a leadership role within the school for 2019. It also gives me great pleasure to also acknowledge the following past students for continuing their leadership development. I wish them all the very best as they continue to enhance this wonderful state high school.

Parents’ and Citizens’ Association Meeting

The Worongary State School’s Parents’ and Citizens’ Association’s meeting for the month of February will be conducted on Thursday 21 February in the staffroom. A key agenda item on this month’s agenda will be the acquittal of expended funds for Phase 1 of the Air-conditioning Project. We will also commence discussing Phase 2 or the project. The meeting will commence at 4:30pm and conclude by 6:00pm. All parents are cordially invited to attend.

Enhancing Communication

With our official Day 8 process now behind us I am pleased to report that there will be no changes to the school’s class structure. 2019 will see our school further strengthening our response to inclusive education. Our Differentiation Mentors (DM) proved to be an extremely beneficial resource for all class teachers in 2018. These roles will continue in 2019. Mrs Sullivan / Mr Viccars (Prep – Year 2), Mrs Karam (Year 3 and Year 4) and Mrs Jackson (Year 5 and 6) have over the past few weeks been working tirelessly to support your children in their transition to the new school year. These wonderful and highly skilled teachers are also a fantastic contact for parents who have concerns about their child’s academic progress, social development or learning difficulty or disability.

Continuing in 2019 Worongary State School has aligned leadership responsibilities to each of the year levels. During the school year if you wish to raise any problems or concerns you will be directed to speak with your child’s class teacher (in the first instance). In the event that the matter is not resolved to your satisfaction I then invite you to make contact with the appropriate school leader. Students in Prep to Year 2 will be led by Mrs Kerry White (kwhit85@eq.edu.au) while students in Years 3-Year 6 will be supported by Mrs Kelly Ready (kread5@eq.edu.au). Parents are welcome to also forward any concerns to me. My preferred method of contact is via email. All parents should be aware that as I have over 700 students linked to my Dojo account, messages are easily missed. Parents wishing to get in contact with me are invited to email me directly – ldare1@eq.edu.au.

For your convenience I have added the relevant email address for all of our current teaching staff members. Given the busy nature of our profession it is sometimes easier to send through an email for later attention. If the matter is urgent please do not hesitate to contact the office for assistance. I am looking forward to continuing to work closely with you to ensure your child is constantly striving for excellence.

Parent / Teacher Interviews

I sincerely thank all of the parents who braved the extreme temperatures last Wednesday to join with us for our parent information session. I trust all parents found the information shared useful. All teachers will be forwarding information to those parents who were unable to make this afternoon session. I would encourage any parent who has not received this information to contact their child’s class teacher.

Next week, all parents will receive a formal invitation from your child’s teacher to join them in celebrating your child’s many wonderful achievements during Term 1. Our Term 1 Parent / Teacher interviews will be conducted in the school’s hall on Wednesday 20 March. These interviews provide an opportunity for your child’s class teacher to share with you their progress towards achieving their individual literacy and numeracy goals. Commencing next week, parents will be invited to log onto the school’s website and book a time to meet with your child’s class teacher. If for any reason you are unable to find a suitable time please contact your child’s teacher. We thank you in advance for helping us to build a stronger and more connected school community.

Volunteers Workshop

On Friday, Mrs Kelly Ready presented the first Volunteer Workshop for 2019. I sincerely thank the many parents who attended this workshop. Your child will love your involvement in their classroom. Parents and grandparents who attended this session are now encouraged to speak to your child’s class teacher to confirm a suitable time to volunteer in their rooms. Parents are always welcome to volunteer their time in other roles across the school (eg tuckshop). Please contact the school if you would like to obtain additional information on how you can enhance the educational opportunities our students receive through volunteering.

Parents who were unable to attend this session are encouraged to complete an online course. More information regarding this course can be found in this edition of the newsletter.

Seedling Program Working Bee

Last year our students were extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to participate in the Worongary Seedling Program. This program is co-ordinated by Mrs Audrey Mates-Bills. Audrey is a very passionate parent who has over the past 18 months developed the program. Currently the program occurs in an out of bounds area – beside the Hall. To ensure we can maximise our students’ participation, the Seedlings garden will be shifted to a centralised area. Even though the area where it resides now has been great, the program has struggled to get children involved as it is quite far away from supervised areas within the school.

Audrey is seeking volunteers to help move the garden beds to a more appropriate area. The Seedling Program will be hosting a Working Bee on Sunday February 24th. This working bee will commence from 10 am and should be concluded by 1:30pm. Interested parents are encouraged to make contact with Audrey via email - seedlingsworongary@gmail.com

Volunteer Mandatory Training

At Worongary State School, we value community involvement and appreciate the volunteers who come into our school to help in classrooms, run extra-curricular activities, and volunteer in our tuckshop.

Before volunteering, it is important that our community members know the expectations of conduct and students protection. These elements are compulsory for any person, whether a staff member, contractor or volunteer, to know and understand.

We have recently held a face-to-face session run at the school to go through Code of Conduct and Student Protection training. If you were unable to attend this session, you will need to complete the online training:

  1. You can download the Mandatory All-Staff Training Program-Key Messages Guide below. Once completed, when logging on to our system, you will be able to tick to say you have read and understood the key messages.

In addition to this, when signing in at Worongary State School, the visitor sign-in program will take you through the key messages the first time you log in. You will need to read the messages and tick to say you have read the information and agree. This record is then stored at the school and remains valid for 12 months.

Mandatory All-Staff Training program - Key messages guide

Volunteers, contractors and visitors must complete this process annually and be able to present the Record of Completion anytime they are visiting a departmental site.

Instructions:

  • access the Key messages guide (PDF, 893KB)
  • review the information
  • complete the declaration and fill in your details on the Record of Completion section which you will find on the last page of the guide
  • the supervisor, manager or principal of the location you are visiting with verify the completed declaration and finalise the Record of Completion with a signature and date (and school stamp if you are visiting a school)
  • retain the verified Record of Completion section. It will be recognised at schools and departmental sites for 12 months.

Check with the supervisor, manager or principal at the location you are visiting for guidance and the additional information, as per the induction list above, you need to be aware of while working at their department site.

Behaviour

Behaviour

The Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) program was adopted at Worongary State School in 2010. It has assisted our school to create positive learning environments by developing proactive whole-school systems to define, teach, and support appropriate student behaviours. PBL was developed by leading behavioural experts to reduce problem behaviour and increase academic performance. At Worongary State School we implement evidence-based approaches to managing student behaviour to support current issues.

With strong emphasis on data-based decision-making, the program is evaluated regularly and practices are adjusted to make sure the process is achieving effective results with positive behaviour support focussed on teaching appropriate behaviour to all students in the school.

Each edition of the school’s newsletter will contain our Term’s Behaviour Focus as well as the specific rules we will be explicitly focusing on during the next few weeks. We seek the support of all parents to speak to your children about these rules and reinforce how they can positively contribute to our school’s learning environment.

Queensland Ready Reading

The Ready Reading program invites parents and community members to make a difference in their local community by volunteering in schools to support children’s reading.

Reading is a powerful tool to help children grow their vocabulary, language skills and imagination. It helps them to develop life-long skills that will support their future growth and learning.

The Department of Education’s Reading Centre and Volunteering Queensland are working together to help improve literacy for children in Queensland by training up to 3000 volunteers to share their knowledge and time to foster a love of reading.

For any Mums, Dads, Grandparents and Carers interested in becoming a Tuckshop volunteer on a weekly, fortnightly or even monthly basis, we encourage you to come visit us and find out more. Online Ordering Profiles Must be Updated for 2019

Just another reminder, online ordering profiles need to be updated manually by parents each year. Now that you know your child’s new class, please remember to update their online ordering profiles to ensure that orders are sent to the correct place. Please note that Tuckshop and Uniform Shop online ordering profiles must be updated separately.

New Menu

Laminated copies of the menu were distributed to classrooms a couple of weeks ago and should have arrived home with the youngest child of each family. Additional copies are available from the Tuckshop should any families require one.

We ask that you please take a moment to read the information provided on the back of the menu. This includes instructions on how to order as well as additional information that is helpful for all to understand.

Meal Deals

At the end of the term we will be recognising and celebrating Easter with some Meal Deals. Watch this space in the next Pipeline for details on this event.

Sushi

For those who are missing sushi from our everyday menu, please keep an eye out for deals throughout the year as we will ensure that it makes an appearance from time to time.

Frozen Treats

We have plenty of yummy, healthy frozen treats available to help the children get through the extremely hot days we’ve been experiencing. Examples are:

  • Tubs of Frozen Grapes for $1.50 each
  • Icebergs for 50c each (cubes of frozen yoghurt and fruit)
  • A pack of 2 Frozen Orange Wedges for 50c

These items are all available at Second Break via online and manual ordering and can be purchased over the counter at both breaks for students in Years 1-6.

[*NB: Ice cold bottles of water can be purchased at any time for $1.50]

Over Counter Sales

The Over Counter Sales menu is available for 15 minutes at First Break and Second Break play time for students in Years 1-6 and can get very busy. If you are giving your children money to purchase items at this time, we ask that you please have a chat with them about the menu beforehand so they are aware of what’s on offer at this time and what they can buy with their money. This will enable us to keep the queue moving and minimise the wait time.

All items are priced at $3.00 or less so our float is accordingly minimal. Denominations larger than a $5 note will not be accepted at this time. Please also note that children are only to buy for themselves and are not permitted to buy for friends.
