From the Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Over the past few weeks I have asked all teachers to place a focus on ensuring all students are wearing our correct school uniform. I seek the assistance from all parents to ensure your child’s school uniform complies with our school’s expectations. Worongary State School is a uniform school. Parents are expected to ensure that black leather (sports or formal)

shoes are worn with the school’s uniform. This week Mr Mullay’s STEM team commenced visiting classrooms with a specially designed Shoe Box. This box was designed by our students to help raise an awareness of our school’s uniform expectations. Once the shoe has been scanned the students receive feedback on whether their shoes meets the school’s expectations. I thank this team for their ingenuity and hope this raises an awareness of our community’s expectations. With the majority of the 2019 school year remaining, replacing shoes now may save many future reminders.

Parent / Teacher Interviews

I sincerely thank all of the parents who are able to attended our Term 1 Parent / Teacher interviews this evening. These interviews provide an opportunity for your child’s class teacher to share with you their individual literacy and numeracy goals. It also provides an opportunity for your child’s class teacher to outline the areas that your child has performed well in during Term 1. Parents who were unable to book an appointment are strongly encouraged to contact your child’s class teacher and arrange an alternative appointment. Parents interested in obtaining additional information about their child’s progress can make contact with our staff through Dojo or email. I wish to thank all parents for helping us to build a stronger and more connected school community.

Outside School Hours Care Service (OSHCS)

At our first Parents’ and Citizens’ Association (P and C Assoc) meeting I put forward a motion outlining my intention to tender our Outside School Hours Care Service (OSHCS). All Education Queensland schools are required to periodically review their OSHCS contract. As our current OSHC (Helping Hands) have received a number of contract extensions over the past 5 years, we are now bound to readvertise this service through the Queensland Government’s QTender website. This process will ensure our school continues to deliver the best service for our community.

Parents wishing to obtain additional information are encouraged to contact the office.

Air-Conditioning Project

Last week was clearly an extremely hot week for us all. Over the course of the week a number of parents contacted me regarding the roll out of the air-conditioning project. As mentioned in previous editions of the school’s Pipeline, the total expenditure of Phase 1 of the Air-Conditioning Project exceeded $120,000. This expenditure was comprised of a $35,000 Community Benefit Fund (grant application), $55,000 donation from the P and C Assoc and $30,000 from the school’s grant allocation. We acknowledge and thank the P and C Assoc for all of the hard work that went into fundraising the $55,000.

Phase 2 of the Air-Conditioning Project will be reliant on funds raised. A building fund has been opened by the P & C Assoc to accept donations from parents and community members. Donations into this Building Fund are tax deductable. Parents, relatives, friends and businesses can contribute to the building fund using the following details:

CBA
BSB: 064-451
Account Number: 1051-5701

To ensure a receipt is issued, please put the ID for your child in the comments section. Your ID will be the first 5 letters of your child’s surname and the first 3 letters of their given name. Your assistance will significantly help our Treasurer to identify your family and issue the receipt. No donation will be too big or too small, we greatly accept them all.

All parents interested in having input into Phase 2 of the Air-Conditioning project are invited to attend our P and C Assoc Meetings.

STEAM Cup

As you may be aware 2019 Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) is a core aspect of our 2019 – 2020 Strategic Plan. 2019 is the first year our school has employed a full time STEM teacher. Mr Mullaly is an extremely passionate and committed teacher who is working tirelessly to provide our students with every opportunity to develop their higher order thinking skills.

Last Friday 20 of our Year 6 students went to Merrimac State High School to compete in the inaugural STEAM Cup. Students worked in teams of 4 to complete a range of challenges that utilised skills and knowledge from Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. I wish to congratulate our students who performed exceptionally well during the competition. In particular I congratulate them for achieving the best results in the rocket, earthquake and turbine challenges. At the conclusion of the day Worongary finished 2nd overall, narrowly beaten by Robina in the final pasta bridge building challenge. Our students collaborated together to create the best solutions possible to the challenges presented to them. I wish to congratulate each one of these students for the way in which they represented Worongary State School. Congratulations to all participating students on their fantastic achievements.

Students in Years 3 to 6 interested in taking part in STEM challenges are encouraged to join our STEM Club. This club meets weekly during the student’s lunch break. I sincerely thank Mr Mullaly for his outstanding leadership of this exciting new strategic direction.

Before School

A reminder to parents that there is no supervision prior to 8:30am. If students arrive before the 8:50am bell, please remind them to go directly to Central Games where there is a teacher on duty from 8:30am. Students will remain seated in Central Games until they are dismissed at 8:50am. At this time, students move to their classrooms to get ready for learning, which begins at 9:00am.

If students are waiting with parents or a carer outside of their classrooms, please remember that there is no play before school. This helps to settle the children and make sure they are ready to begin their learning. Students are also not permitted on any play equipment before or after school.

Investing for Success

In 2019, the Australian Government has made available, an additional investment in funding to Queensland for State Schooling. Our Investing for Success funding has been founded upon a needs-based method. This methodology better directs funding to students and schools requiring the most support. All State Schools use Investing for Success funding to support students, particularly those most in need, to achieve improved outcomes at all levels of schooling.

At Worongary State School, this funding will be used to:

Priority 1 - Increase the percentage of students achieving a ‘B’ or above on their end of semester English and Maths Report.

Actions

Costs

Employing a Pedagogical Coach to support teachers in aligning their pedagogy to the identified needs of the students.

$80,000

Employing a Head of Curriculum to support the development of a whole school culture to curriculum planning, assessment and reporting

$100,000

Implementing targeted intervention and extension support using highly specialised Student Support Officers

$45,572

Priority 2 - Increase the percentage of students transitioning throughout the Early Years on track. Particular reference to the AEDC Language and Cognition Domain.

Actions

Costs

Leading the Nerang Alliance of State School’s Early Years Project and funding the employment of a Nerang Alliance Early Years Coach

$ 11,500

Investing in additional Speech Language Pathology to build the capacity of our teaching staff and specialised Student Support Officers to implement an age appropriate oral language program.

$ 19,000

Implementing targeted intervention and extension support using highly specialised Student Support Officers

$15,000

I look forward to sharing our progress throughout 2019 at our monthly Parents’ and Citizens’ Association meetings. If you require additional information regarding how this initiative will enhance your child’s education please don’t hesitate to contact the office and arrange an appointment.

Internal Audit

Over the past few days we have had the privilege of hosting Mr Garry Buckler (Principal Internal Auditor – Internal Audit Branch). Garry has been working with our school leadership team to complete our 2019 Internal Audit. All schools across Queensland are periodically audited to ensure all of the Department’s policies and procedures are effectively and efficiently implemented in line with the school audit program. The focus will be on current work practices, however in some instances, documentation completed since the last audit may be requested. At the completion of the audit field work, an exit meeting will be held to advise our school’s leadership team of the provisional findings, summarise areas of good performance and identify key areas for improvement. This exit meeting provides our team the opportunity to discuss the provisional findings and correct any misunderstandings or misinterpretations. I look forward to sharing this report with our school community in the near future.

Parents’ and Citizens’ Annual General Meeting

The Worongary State School’s Parents’ and Citizens’ Association’s meeting for the month of March will be conducted on Wednesday 27 March. Prior to this monthly meeting, the Association will conduct their Annual General Meeting. At this meeting all executive positions will be declared vacant and we will again be looking for parents to volunteer their time to enhance our school community. This meeting will take place in the staff room in the administration block. The meeting will commence at 4:30pm. All parents are cordially invited to attend.

Behaviour

As part of our school focus to join in with the National Day of Action against Bullying, our students in Year 3-6 met Trish Jackson who is a Thalidomide Survivor. Trish spoke to our students about respect, resilience and raising awareness of tolerance. Trish’s message was ‘I can’.

https://footsiephotos.com/

On Friday 15 March our whole school was invited to engage in a range of activities to promote school being a safe place and zero tolerance to bullying. Thank you to all our teachers, teacher aides and students who participated.

Regards, Kaia Clarke, Behaviour

From the Student Council

Student Council are having a free dress day on Friday 29th March. Students are asked to bring a gold coin donation and dress like a farmer (or a cow!) for the day. All money raised will go to the ‘Buy a Cow’ campaign.

The first cattle from Rural Aid’s ‘Buy a Cow’ campaign have been delivered to a property 60kms North of Winton. The campaign was started to help farmers who lost cattle during the terrible floods in January up in NW Queensland.

The aim of ‘Buy a Cow’ is to help farmers re-build their herds. It provides individual farmers with $15,000 to purchase cattle of their choosing. Rural Aid hopes to raise over $7.5 million to help over 500 farmers.

Thanks in advance for your support.

Ready Reading Volunteers

The Queensland Ready Reading (QRR) volunteer program is an initiative between The Department of Education and Volunteering Queensland who are working together to train volunteers to support reading in schools across Queensland.

Ready Reading volunteers work with individual children, particularly in the early years, to listen to students read aloud and provide reading support. Under the direction of the classroom teacher, they talk to students about the text and its meaning. This one-to-one engagement will assist students to become confident and independent in their reading.

Ready Reading volunteers will undergo training to learn about the components of reading, how to support a child with reading and strategies to develop independent reading skills. This training will also help volunteers support their own children with home reading.

If you would like to be a Ready Reading Volunteer, please visit:

Newsletter Submission 5
Term 1

HAVE YOU ASKED YOUR CHILD WHAT THEY ARE LEARNING IN MUSIC?

I hope many of you can answer yes to this question! Every student at Worongary has one half hour music lesson a week. In these lessons, students learn rhymes and songs in conjunction with movement that strengthen awareness of beat and rhythm. Melodic awareness and in-tune singing is developed initially through simple two and three sound songs and then progresses using tools such as the Curwen Solfa hand-sign system and traditional staff notation. Movement and ensemble work is an integral part of the learning experience.

To get the conversation started with your child, ask them to perform any of these rhymes/songs for you. This is not an exhaustive list of the children’s repertoire, just some of the favourites!

CONGRATULATIONS JUNIOR CHOIR

Last Monday our Junior Choir performed at Assembly ‘Colours of Australia’, a song that celebrates diversity and encourages respect and tolerance for all. The Junior Choir was established for students in Years 1 and 2 who enjoy learning new skills and making music together. This was the first time this year that the Junior Choir had performed as an ensemble on the stage and they did an outstanding job. Well done Junior Choir!

PRINCIPAL’S MUSIC BUS SCHOLARSHIP

The Music Bus currently visits our school each week providing small group music lessons before and after school. Tuition is offered in keyboard, guitar, yukele, drums and voice.

A very exciting opportunity, a Principal’s Scholarship, is being offered to enable one student at Worongary to receive free tuition for a whole year!

Students wishing to apply for this Scholarship, please submit a one page application addressing the following:

  1. State your name, class and interests (current and past extra-curricula activities encouraged).
  2. State which instrument you would like to learn and why you want to learn this instrument.
  3. Briefly describe how you have demonstrated commitment to challenging tasks.
  4. Parents must sign this application, be committed to before and/or after school lessons (for an entire year) and commit to purchasing or hiring an instrument and any required tuition books for home practise.

Please forward all applications to office@worongaryss.eq.edu.au by Wednesday April 3.

BAND LESSON FEEDBACK

Each week Miss Ryan posts on Class Dojo, feedback for each lesson group. This often details particularly tasks that need attention and practice. Please check this and if unsure, clarify with a message.

CHOIR HOME PRACTICE

This year all Junior and Senior Choir participants have been issued with sheet music that is being studied and a folder to keep it in. Please bring this music to each rehearsal as we often make notes on the scores. Additionally, recording have been made of all pieces. To enable children to access these, please bring a USB to the Music Room as this will assist the children with home practise (if they have access to a device!).

CONGRATULATIONS SENIOR STRINGS

Congratulations to Jasper M, Tamia T, Lacey J, Schuma K, Charli N and Chloe H, who have been diligently attending additional rehearsals to improve their ensemble playing. They have also set themselves some very challenging goals! Keep up the great work!
