From the Principal

Dear Parents,
With Term 1 almost completed, I would like to acknowledge the hard work that our teaching staff have put into supporting your child to achieve excellence. Our school’s vision of “Striving for Excellence” is evident in each and every classroom. Our teachers have worked extremely hard to establish strong lines of communications with each parent. Our teaching team was energised by the large percentage of parents who attended our Term 1 Parent / Teacher interviews. I am confident that the outcomes from these meetings will support all of our students to achieve their personal learning goals in Term 2. I trust you will join with me in acknowledging and thanking our dedicated teaching staff members for their efforts during Term 1.
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) Celebration
Last week we were extremely proud to showcase our whole school approach to managing student behaviour. Over the past 4 years, Worongary State School has worked tirelessly to implement a Responsible Behaviour Plan that is reflective of our community’s expectations and international best practice. Last Monday project officers from Brisbane travelled to our school to take photos and videos of our school’s outstanding PBL processes. The recognition that this project has provided our school is reinforced by more than 93% or our parents and 97% of our students indicating their satisfaction with how well student behaviour is managed at this school (2018 School Opinion Survey). These Project Officers will return to our school in the second week of Term 2 to continue their work. All footage will be used to further illustrate “best practice” at the Queensland State PBL Conference in June. I acknowledge and thank Mrs Zaar (Prep B), Mrs Walland (Year 3B) and Miss Williamson (Year 6D) for supporting this opportunity to showcase our school. I also sincerely thank all parents and our amazing students for all they did to assist the film crew last week. Parents with children in these classes will be advised as soon as the files have been edited and returned to the school.
Dojo Badges
A critical component of our school’s responsible behaviour plan is to reinforce and celebrate positive behaviour choices by awarding Dojo points. This system allows parents the opportunity to receive live feedback from the class teacher about the amazing work students are achieving in their classes each day. Dojos are an online rewards program that can help track student behaviour and provide free and frequent positive reinforcement for all students. Students earn Dojos from staff for doing the right thing in the classroom, at specialist lessons and in the school playground. Students are rewarded for positive behaviour based on our 3 school rules:
- I am Safe
- I am Respectful
- I am a Learner
Once students have met certain Dojo milestones they are provided a badge on our weekly assembly. Students are provided badges for their efforts once they have achieved:
- Bronze: 100
- Silver: 250
- Gold: 450
- Platinum: 700
Last year our school invested heavily in ensuring the quality of our Dojo badges reflected the effort that was required to receive one. Following feedback at last week’s Parents’ and Citizens’ Association meeting, we are currently investigating whether there is an opportunity to allow parents to also track individual student’s totals. More information will be provided in up and coming editions of the Pipeline.
Internal Audit
As outlined in the previous edition of the Pipeline, Mr Garry Buckler (Principal Internal Auditor – Internal Audit Branch) has now completed his review of our school’s procedures. All schools across Queensland are periodically audited to ensure all of the Department’s policies and procedures are effectively and efficiently implemented in line with the school audit program. The recommendations from this internal review were shared with our school community during last week’s Parents’ and Citizens’ Association meeting. Although the school is yet to receive Mr Buckler’s official report, we have already commenced implementing some of his recommendations. One of these recommendations relate to obtaining Third Part Website Consent.
The use of web based educational resources has risen steadily over the last decade and are increasingly being used by teachers across Queensland to improve student learning outcomes.
Our school and teachers make decisions about the best technology to meet the needs of our students. Sometimes it is beneficial for students to utilise services provided by third party web based providers.
Worongary State School wishes to utilise the third party web based service provider/s listed below to aid students’ learning. For your student to use the service the teacher will need to register them as a user. Registering with these providers requires student personal information to be disclosed to the provider of the service. In the case of the services outlined below they are private companies that are hosted onshore in Australia and outside of Australia. Outside of Australia means that data that is entered to register for these sites will be stored on servers that are not based in Australia and therefore are not bound by Queensland’s privacy laws. Registration may include disclosing the following information about your child:
- Student Name,
- Student ID,
- Age,
- Year group,
- Class Teacher and
- Student email
We need your permission for the registration and use of these sites by your student. All students received a Third Part Website Consent form last week. I sincerely thank the parents who have already returned this consent from back to your child’s class teacher. Parents wishing to obtain additional information are encouraged to contact Ms Jann Connor by email (jconn31@eq.edu.au) or via phone 5502 4444.
Parents’ and Citizens’ Association AGM
Last Wednesday our school’s Parents’ and Citizens’ Association conducted our 2019 Annual General Meeting. At this meeting it gave me great pleasure to acknowledge and pay tribute to the 2018 Executive for their leadership and support. In 2018 this association provided valuable guidance to our leadership team and greatly appreciated resources to the students. On behalf of our school community I wish to extend a sincere thank you to this team for their tireless efforts in meeting the needs of our students and wider community. It was an absolute pleasure to work with these outstanding volunteers during 2018. I wish to also thank the many volunteers who have worked alongside Michelle and Jasmine in the school’s tuckshop. Without these dedicated men and women this service would not be available to all of our students.
I am delighted to announce the school community our 2019 Executive members. I trust you will join with me in acknowledging and thanking our 2019 Worongary State School Parents’ and Citizens’ Association Executive:
President: Rhiannon
Henson
Vice President: Tracy Bosworth
Secretary: Diana Stent
Treasurer: Rob Paolini
Vice Treasure: Kylie Jerome
I sincerely thank these dedicated parents for their commitment to our school and look forward to working with them during 2019 to implement initiatives that will improve our wider school community.
Read and Grow Celebration
Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending this year’s Read and Grow Easter celebration. Mrs Huggard led a fun filled morning of Easter celebrations and singing. I sincerely thank Mrs Huggard for her dedication and commitment to our Read and Grow program and trust all of the participating families have enjoyed the activities over the past seven weeks.
Parents wishing to enrol in Term Two’s Read and Grow Program are strongly encouraged to contact the school and book a place. The Read and Grow Program will commence in the second week of Term 2. It is a free 7-week program for 3-5 year old children and their parents. The program is a fun interactive story-sharing program for parents and children. Throughout the program children will learn to listen, sing songs, share books and play together. This is a great way to develop your child’s oral language skills and help prepare them for school.
2019 Prep Transition
As we move into Term 2, we begin to turn our attention to implementing the 2020 Prep Transition Program. Last week I lead a joint prep transition initiative with other principals across the Nerang Alliance to start communicating with all parents about how they can support their child to transition successfully into school. This was a very well supported initiative and one that we will continue to build upon in 2020.
Parents can support children to transition into Prep in 2020 by participating in the following events.
.png)
After meeting with all principal’s across the Nerang Alliance a decision has been made to place all “out of catchment” enrolments on a waiting list. A decision will be made by all school principals at the conclusion of Term 3. Any new family not currently residing in the Worongary State School catchment is strongly encouraged to submit their enrolment forms as soon as possible.

ANZAC Day RSL March
Due to the timing of the Easter vacation, this year’s ANZAC Day Commemorative Services will be slightly different from previous years. Parents are cordially invited to join with our junior school students (Prep – Year 2) for their service on Tuesday 23 April. This service will commence at 2:30pm in the school’s Hall. This service will replace our weekly assembly.
Parents wishing to attend our senior school service (Year 3 – Year 6) are invited to their service on Wednesday 24 April. This service will commence at 9:15am. Regrettably due to all school’s conducting their services on Wednesday morning we will not have an RSL representative at our senior school service.
Following our school service all students are welcome to participate in the Nerang RSL ANZAC Day March on Thursday 25 April 2019. As per previous years, our students will form a column that carries the 13 divisional banner of our World War 1 veterans. As there are no WW1 veterans left, this will be a real honour for the students.
.png)
Worongary State School will form up in a column on the left hand side of Nerang Street next to Bischof Pioneer Park. This allows the students to arrive safely and gather in the park prior to the march. Please note that the Queensland Police will barricade Nerang Street entry from Ferry Road at 9:00am. Also, Lavelle Street entry from Price Street and Nerang Street entry from White Street will be closed at 9:00am.
Participating students are asked to wear their full school uniform (including their hat) and meet Worongary State School staff in Bischof Pioneer Park at 9:15am. It is anticipated that the march will commence at 9:40am. The march will conclude at the Cenotaph at approximately 10:00am. The main service will commence at the Cenotaph after the march arrives and will conclude at approximately 11am. Information regarding this event has been emailed to all families.
Keep a watch on our school these holidays
With the holidays fast approaching, we need you to look out for after-hours crime in our school. If you see anything suspicious, please call School Watch on 131 788.
The School Watch program is a partnership between the Department of Education, Training and Employment, the Queensland Police Service and the State Government Protective Security Service. It aims to reduce vandalism, theft and arson in Queensland schools.
If you do see something suspicious, please don’t attempt to intervene. Call the School Watch number and let the local police or State Government Protective Security Service deal with the matter. Keep the number handy—131 788—and let’s work together to help create a safer school community.
Easter Break
Finally, on behalf of our entire school staff I wish you and your family a very happy and relaxing Easter break. It has been an absolute pleasure to witness firsthand the improvements our students have made during Term 1. If you are travelling during the vacation period we wish you a safe and happy journey. We thank you for supporting our school during Term 1. We look forward to continuing supporting your child to achieve excellence when we commence Term 2 on Tuesday 23 April.
Regards Landon Dare, Principal

MUSIC THROUGHOUT TIME PERFORMANCE
Last Wednesday, our Preps and Year 1’s viewed an exciting musical performance – Moz’s Music Throughout Time in our school hall. The students listened to music from the Baroque Era, explored the origins of Rock music through the discovery of The Blues and Jazz and categorised instruments into families.
Thank you to all the families that supported this event. A very large thank-you also to our tireless Office staff, our Groundsman, our Hall Convenor and of course our wonderful Classroom Teachers who all enabled this performance to take place.

SENIOR STUDENTS MUSIC WORKSHOP MERRIMAC STATE HIGH SCHOOL
Yesterday a number of our Senior Instrumental Music students, Band and Strings, visited Merrimac State High School for a full day of rehearsals and instrumental workshops. PRINCIPAL’S MUSIC BUS SCHOLARSHIP CLOSING SOON!

A very exciting opportunity, a Principal’s Scholarship, is being offered to enable one student at Worongary to receive free tuition for a whole year!
Students wishing to apply for this Scholarship please submit a one page application addressing the following:
- State your name, class and interests (current and past extra-curricula activities encouraged).
- State which instrument you would like to learn and why you want to learn this instrument.
- Briefly describe how you have demonstrated commitment to challenging tasks.
- Parents must sign this application, be committed to before and/or after school lessons (for an entire year) and commit to purchasing or hiring an instrument and any required tuition books for home practise.
Please forward all applications to the office@worongaryss.eq.edu.au by Wednesday April 3.
SENIOR CHOIR PERFORMANCE ANZAC SERVICE
Students in the Senior Choir (Years 3 – 6) will be performing at our Senior School Anzac Service. This performance will be on Wednesday April 24 at 9:15am in the School hall. Families and members of the community are invited to attend.
HOLIDAY PRACTISE
Holidays are the perfect time to ‘ramp-up’ home practice! Parents often ask “How can I encourage my child to practise over the holidays?” Here are 5 tips!
- Keep the instrument visible. Out of sight, out of mind!
- Encourage small but regular sessions. Ask your child to perform for you and praise, praise, praise!
- Make it fun. Find a song or piece of music, that they really want to learn. The internet offers so much inspiration!
- Invite friends over for a ‘jam’ session.
Rather than nagging students to practise, say “Play some music for me.”
Wishing all families a safe, relaxed and joyful Easter!
