From the Principal

This week we officially welcome Mrs Tracie Hocart to our school community. Tracie has been appointed to our school’s Business Manager position while Mrs Rachel Zorbas is on leave. I am extremely confident that Tracie’s outstanding leadership within the Queensland Police Service will add significant value to our school. I trust you will join with me in welcoming Tracie to our school.
Lego Sumo Cup Success
Our world is changing more rapidly than at any other time with the influence of technology spreading to touch every aspect of our lives. A core aspect of our school’s 2018-2020 Strategic Plan outlines how we will ensure our students are well prepared to engage in this exciting future. Through learning coding and robotics, we are preparing all students for the jobs of the future by developing their skills in critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and innovation. On Tuesday 28 May, 2019 our Senior Robotics Club students competed in the Lego Sumo Cup Competition at Merrimac State High School. Our students thoroughly enjoyed the event and should be congratulated for the way they worked together and represented Worongary State School.
At the conclusion of the day, our Year 6 Dinosaur Nuggets Team was awarded the Phoenix Award for their perseverance, problem solving and collaboration. The judges acknowledged this team for how well our students worked together, responded to challenges and followed the technology process to improve on their robot throughout the event. Congratulations to David, Madisyn, Adam and Lola from 5/6A for this fantastic result. All of our teams worked so well during the fun filled day.
Our Senior Robotics Club will continue to be conducted during lunch times with our focus now turning to weekly challenges. This work will help our students develop the skills they need for First Lego League in Term 4. Parents are also encouraged to keep an eye out for the Robotics Club presentation during the annual book week celebrations. New students are always welcome to join for Term 3 and should come to the STEM room Tuesday or Wednesday lunchtime if interested.
Congratulations to Mr Tim Mullaly for supporting our students to achieve this outstanding result. Mr Mullaly’s dedication and commitment is providing all students with opportunities to develop their 21st Century skills. Our school community is very fortunate to have Mr Mullaly on our team.
Assessment and Reporting
End of Semester 1 Report Cards are in their final stages of being completed. As per previous years, these reports will be emailed to all parents on the last Wednesday of this Semester (2 June 2019). As previously shared, our teaching staff have been working to strengthen the alignment between the Australian Curriculum’s Achievement Standards and our reporting comments. We have also invested heavily to ensure consistent judgements and expectations have been implemented across each class within a year level. As a result of this work, parents will see a few slight changes to our Semester 1 report cards. The majority of the students’ report card comments will be the same. These comments will be reflective of the relevant Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) Achievement Standard covered during this Semester. The achievement (A-E) will then outline for parents the degree in which the student has achieved this standard. There has been no changes to the way in which teachers award the Effort Achievement.
The final aspect of the reporting process is the overall general comment. Feedback from parents has highlighted that this comment is one of the most highly valued components of the Semester’s Report. Under this new approach, teachers will create a very personalised and informative description of your child’s approach to their learning. It will highlight their personal attributes that contributed to their success, while also providing guidance on their next steps in their learning.
We welcome parents making contact with the class teacher to obtain any additional information regarding these reports. I sincerely thank the teaching team for their commitment to producing these informative reports and trust all parents will value the information contained in these reports.
Semester 1 Awards Ceremonies – Date Claimer
During Week 10 we will once again have the pleasure of acknowledging the outstanding achievements of many of our student in Years 1-6 during Semester 1. We will formally celebrate our Year 1 and Year 2 students’ Semester 1 achievements on 24 June at 2:15pm while our Year 3 to Year 6 students will come together for their ceremony on Thursday 27 June at 9:15am. We cordially invite all parents to join with us to congratulate all students who have excelled in their studies of the Key Learning Areas of English, Maths, Science, History and Geography. Students who have consistently achieved a very high standard in these Key Learning Areas will be presented with a Principal’s Academic Excellence Award.
Creative Generation Choral Fanfare (Choral Fanfare)
Choral Fanfare is a biennial festival of choirs from Queensland state schools. The aim of Choral Fanfare is to promote and celebrate school-based choral music programs. The program receives participation from over 8,000 state school students and showcases the outstanding vocal talents in our schools. This year’s Choral Fanfare is showcasing the outstanding vocal talents from state school choirs by providing opportunities for students to exhibit vocal talents through performance.
Our school’s Senior Choir recently participated in the local Choral Fanfare competition. The school teams that competed in this year’s competition round were exceptional. Even though every school team performed very well on the day there could only be one winner. At the end of the competition, the judges confidently awarded the Worongary Sate School’s Senior Choir as the 2019 Local Creative Generation Choral Fanfare winner. This achievement illustrates the commitment each member of the choir has made to improving. We congratulate our choir and Ms Katheryn Jones for her exceptional leadership. Ms Jones is a dedicated and passionate educator who is constantly encouraging our students to perform to the best of their ability. Well done everyone and I wish you all the very best at the up and coming South East Queensland Regional Choral Fanfare Finals.
Container Refund Scheme
I sincerely thank all of our volunteers and supporters who contributed to ensuring our school’s first Container Refund Scheme collection day was a tremendous success. I sincerely thank this team of volunteers who accepted so many Envirobank orange mesh bags full of containers. These volunteers were positioned in the designated collection area at the front of the school (between the top of the entry stairs and the flagpoles). Miss Thompson and our Year 6C class is to be commended for their ongoing assistance in helping our students who brought in a bag of containers. I also wish to acknowledge this team of dedicated Environmental Warriors who position themselves beside the bins each lunch and encourage all students to consider making better choices with their rubbish.
Approximately 350 orange mesh bags were recently delivered to the office. These Envirobank bags were provided to all of our students who expressed an interest in supporting our school’s initiative to reduce our environmental footprint. These bags can be returned to the collection point mentioned above each fortnight. The next collection data will be Wednesday 26 June. Families can also take these Envirobank bags directly to a local collection depot. Families are able to donate these funds to our school’s air-conditioning project by simply providing the contractor with our school’s details (Scheme ID number C10179198). Due to workplace health and safety concerns, the school is unable to accept glass containers during the collection days. Parents wishing to donate glass bottles are strongly encouraged to take these to the collection depots and use the above-mentioned Scheme ID Number.
I thank Chelsea McLean for all of her leadership of this initiative. While this opportunity is a sustainable fund raising activity, I am truly delighted that this initiative promotes and encourages all students to take action and reduce the impact these plastics have on our environment.
P and C Association
On Friday 31 May 2019, our school’s Parents’ and Citizens’ Association held their annual Trivia Night fundraiser. Thank you to all of the parents who attended the evening, I trust you enjoyed what was a very successful evening. I sincerely thank Ms Meaghan Scanlon (State Member for Gaven and Assistant Minister for Tourism Industry Development) and her team for supporting this event. Meaghan is a tremendous supporter of Worongary State School and all members of the P and C Association Executive appreciated her attendance at our annual trivia night.
Events like the annual Trivia Night do not just happen. I wish to thank Rhiannon H, Kylie J, Rob P, Tracy B, Diana S, Elizabeth M an Kristy D (William Duncan State School P and C Assoc President) for their contribution to the evening. Countless hours of preparation and organisation went into making sure this event was successful. From coordinating the prizes, setting up the hall, organising the refreshments, completing the presentation and / or packing up the hall at the end of the long day, this amazing team had every aspect of the event covered. Congratulations to this hard working and amazing team of volunteers.
Special thank you to Mrs Heather DeWatteville Doe (Year 3/4 Class Teacher) for hosting the Trivia Night. Everyone who attended the evening will agree that Heather did an amazing job hosting this event. Even after a day of teaching Heather still managed to have the energy and enthusiasm to keep the crowd entertained and laughing. This event would not have been as successful without her contribution and we thank her very much.

Behaviour

Behaviour Choices
Please discuss with your children the need to continually focus on our three school rules.
I am a Learner, I am Safe and I am Respectful.
In particular, safe and respectful play during break times. In the past fortnight there has been a spike in physical misconduct. We always have staff on duty and procedures are followed. We appreciate your support in discussing this focus with your children.

We were treated to Program Music - Beauty and the Beast by Ravel and a number of modern soundscape compositions that utilised the bassoon, clarinet and flute in unconventional and unique ways. The Great Train Race, Rain and Rubispheres were all crowd favourites. Thank you to the parental community that supported their children to participate and bring such talented professional musicians to Worongary.

- Focusing on key words and concepts
- asking and answering questions
- noticing the print and the written word in the story or title

We are encouraging families to get on board and support our school by collecting containers at home using the orange bags that are provided by the school. Remember no straws or lids are to be left in containers as this will save time on collection day!! Also no GLASS!! As we are trying to reduce our paper usage we won’t by sending notes home so please Dojo you child’s classroom teacher asking for a bag so that it can be sent home ASAP.

Our NEXT collection day will be next Wednesday the 26th June. We ask that you please return the bags to the school senior games undercover area on the morning of the collection day before 9am so that our wonderful Environmental Warriors can have the containers sorted and ready for the truck before school starts.
Every student that returns an orange bag will go into the raffle to win fortnightly prizes!!
