Newsletter Articles

From the Principal

Last week all parents would have received a text message from the school seeking your assistance to help at the Bunnings BBQ fundraiser. All profits from this BBQ were being allocated to the next phase of the school’s air-conditioning project. I wish to sincerely thank the dedicated and committed group of volunteers who gave their time on the long weekend to support this fundraising initiative. Although the final profit from this initiative is still being calculated, I anticipate that the Association raised in excess of $1,500. Big thank you once again to the volunteers and the P and C Association Executives for the work they do behind the scenes to improve our school.

Interschool Chess Tournament

Last week Beau F-K and Bentley M represented Worongary State School at the Interschool Chess Tournament at the Carrara Indoor Stadium. Worongary has in the past been very proud of our strong chess teams. Beau and Bentley represented our school exceptionally well by competing in the Open G competition. This competition was a wonderful way for our students to network and compete against other children of similar chess competition experience. I congratulate Bentley and Beau for the way in which they represented our school at this competition – we are all very proud of your efforts.

Parents wishing to see what happens in about these lessons are encouraged to participate in a complimentary trial lesson each Friday morning. Mr Bouchard (a past Worongary State School student) conducts lessons in Mrs Jackson’s room from 7.45am. These hour long lessons help children to understand the game and practice their skills. Parents wishing to find out more information about Gardiner Chess are encouraged to contact the school or Gardiner Chess on 5522 7221.

Gold Coast Schools Science Competition

Last week Mr Mullaly submitted a number of Worongary State School students’ entries into the 2019 Gold Coast Schools Science Competition. This is the second year our school has submitted entries into this competition. This year we were once again extremely proud of how all our students independently completed their projects. Amelia H in Prep C and Kaie M in 1D were nominated for prizes. Congratulation to Amelia for winning the Communicating Science category for her project title “How do Grasshoppers Hop?” Kaie was awarded 2nd place in the Engineering and Technology category with his “Flashing Lights” project. Congratulations to both Amelia and Kaie on this fantastic achievement.

Special mention should also go to Mr Mullaly who joined the Griffith Science on the Go team to judge the Year 5-6 Scientific Investigations category. This was one of the largest categories, taking almost 2 hours to judge. The standard of work was exceptional and Mr Mullaly and the other judges found it very challenging to decide upon a winner.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Camp

STEM is a cornerstone of our school’s 2018 – 2021 Strategic Plan. Over the past few days, 16 of our Year 6 students were selected to join other student across the Nerang Alliance to participate in an inaugural STEM Camp. This camp was conducted at Numinbah Valley Environmental Education Centre. Over the past few days, students have enjoyed participating in activities that both consolidate and extend their understanding of scientific concepts. They also experienced a number of physical challenges that required them to work together as a team to overcome a challenge.

I look forward to working with our participating students to see how we can improve this experience for our 2021 Year 6 STEM students. On behalf of our school community, I wish to once again acknowledge and thank Mr Mullaly for his dedication and commitment to enhancing the STEM program at Worongary.

Finally we wish our Year 6 students all the very best when they take on the Gold Coasts finest minds at this year’s Gold Coast STEAM Cup. This event will be held at Griffith University on Friday 13 September. I look forward to sharing the success of this team with you in the next edition of the Pipeline.

Facility Update – I Block Upgrade

On Monday, I met with the Project Coordinators to continue discussions on the Year 5 and 6 class block (I Block). As previously mentioned, this block of classrooms will undergo an $800,000 upgrade. For these classrooms to be ready for our students and staff in 2020, a significant amount of work will need to occur during Term 4. Year 5 students will transition into alternative classrooms in the final week of Term 3. Any changes to timetables, routines and procedures will be kept to a minimum. Year 5 parents will receive information about these classroom changes next week.

Our Year 6 students will transition into their alternative classrooms in Week 6 of Term 4. All efforts are currently being made to limit the disruption for all students and staff. This plan allows our Year 6 students to remain close to each other during their final term of primary education. More information about this move will be circulated closer to the date.

Air-Conditioning M Block

In the last edition of the Pipeline, I highlighted a concern that only 35% of our students contributed to the school’s major fundraising event this year (Colour Run). The impact of this low number was financially significant. I am pleased to report however that since this information was published, the school’s Student Council met and discussed the Parents’ and Citizens’ Association’s commitment to air-condition our classrooms. The Student Council members moved a motion to contribute $5,000 toward supporting the P and C Association in their commitment to air-conditioning our school.

I sincerely thank Ms Quarman, Mrs Williamson and each member of the school’s Student Council for their very generous donation. This kind donation will ensure that our Year 2 classrooms will be air-conditioned over the next holiday period.

Worongary State School Concert

We are excited that the finishing touches to the Worongary State School’s biannual School Concerts are just about completed. I am extremely confident that these concerts will once again showcase our student’s talents and skills. As previously advertised there will be two concerts for each of the sectors of the school (junior and senior school). This year’s concerts are titled:

  • Dreaming (Junior School) and
  • Dance Around the World (Senior School)

The Junior School’s concerts will be held on Thursday 5 September at 6:00pm and a matinee concert on Friday 6 September at 1:00pm. The Senior School matinee performance will commence at 1:00pm on Thursday 5 September. The Senior School’s evening performance will commence at 6:00pm on Friday 6 September.

To help prepare for these concerts, students will participate in a closed full dress rehearsal on Wednesday 4 September during school time. This rehearsal is for students and staff only.

For the Thursday night concert for the Junior School, students are to be dropped off to their own classrooms at 5:30pm, where they will be supervised by their teachers for the evening until pick up time. Please be aware that for the Friday night Senior School concert, senior school classes will be assigned to junior school classrooms for safety and time constraints. Senior students will need to report to their assigned blocks on Friday night at 5:30pm. It is an expectation that students remain with their teacher until the completion of both the Junior and Senior concerts and that parents collect them from the assigned room immediately after the concert finishes.

Although some audience members may want to leave the concert after their child’s performance, it is an expectation that all audience members will remain for the entire length of the concert. This affords all students the experience of performing in front of a full audience. To be considerate of all audience members we ask that parents remain seated during performances and switch your mobile phones to silent.

We are looking forward to celebrating with you, the hard work our students and staff have been putting into their performances to make this a great experience for our community.

Parent / Teacher Interviews

Earlier this week parents should have recently received a formal invitation to join with your child’s class teacher to celebrate their many wonderful achievements during Term 3. Our Term 3 Parent / Teacher interviews will be conducted in the school’s hall on Wednesday 11 September. These interviews provide an opportunity for your child’s class teacher to share with you their individual literacy and numeracy goals. It also provides an opportunity for your child’s class teacher to outline the areas that your child has performed well in during Term 3. Parents are encouraged to log onto the school’s website and book a time to meet with your child’s class teacher. If for any reason you are unable to find a suitable time, please contact your child’s class teacher. We thank you in advance for helping us to build a stronger and more connected school community.

NAPLAN Individual Student Reports

The school has received the 2019 Individual Student Reports from this year’s NAPLAN Test. Each student will be given his or her individual report to bring home on Friday.

Parents’ and Citizens’ Association Meeting

All parents are cordially invited to attend the September’s P and C Association meeting. This meeting will take place in the school’s staff room at 4:30pm on Wednesday 18 September. I hope you will be able to come along and have input into how we can continue to improve our school community.

BOOK WEEK PERFORMANCES

Last Wednesday our Senior Choir, Junior Choir, Advanced Strings, Drumline, Concert Band and Clarinet Quartet did an outstanding job performing numerous items for the community during Book Week Celebrations. Well done to all the students who participated and a massive thank-you to the Worongary community who attended and supported this colourful event.

WELCOME MS GUTHRIG

We welcome Ms Guthrig to the position of Instrumental Strings Teacher for the remainder of this term. Ms Guthrig will be overseeing the program on Tuesdays while Ms Futo is on leave. Students, please follow the regular timetable for rehearsals and lessons.

NEW REPERTOIRE –CHOIRS & STRINGS

New music has been handed out to both choirs and the advanced strings. Please keep this music safe in a display folder and bring to all rehearsals. Choir members are encouraged to bring a USB to rehearsal and music rehearsed can be copied for home practice.

BAND & STRINGS IN 2020?

In the upcoming weeks, the Music Department will be staging a number of concerts, open rehearsals and surprise performances to inspire students in Years 2- 5 who may be interested in learning a musical instrument in 2020.

We currently have a number of positions available for 2020 in both the Strings and Band programs. We also have many quality instruments available for hire. We are particularly seeking students interested in learning – French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, trumpet, saxophone, cello and double bass. Expression of Interest forms are now available from the Music Room.

Continuing students are encouraged to consider purchasing an instrument of their own to allow more students to participate in the Instrumental Music program. For Brass and Wind Instruments, brands such as Yamaha are recommended. For stringed instrument purchases please go to a reputable String specialist store. If unsure please email me and I am happy to assist.

MUSIC SHIRTS

The Worongary Music Shirts are now available in the Uniform Shop. Students in any of the extra-curricular music ensembles can wear these on rehearsal and lesson days and at special performances. They look great!

Have a great rest and we look forward to an exciting Term 3!

Yours in Music
