From the Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Our thoughts and prayers go out to our families and friends who have recently been affected by the terrible bush fires throughout Queensland. I particularly wish to pay tribute to the courageous men and women who braved these extreme conditions to save many homes and businesses in our local area. Canungra, Beechmont and Numinbah State Schools are members of our local Nerang Alliance of State Schools. For many years, this Alliance of State School has prided itself on looking after each other. I recently offered assistance to these schools to help them resume their school routines as soon as possible. Late last week I approved for Mrs Kerry White (our Junior School Deputy) to commence an acting Deputy Principal position at Canungra State School. Kerry will support the Canungra State School leadership team for the remainder of the term. I sincerely thank Kerry for her commitment to our Alliance and supporting the Canungra State School community.

Concert Success

The 2019 Worongary State School Concert series was once again a spectacular event. It was wonderful to see so many of our students up on the stage presenting and dancing. I sincerely thank our teaching staff for their commitment to the event. From costume designs to choreography, their efforts ensure each class looked amazing. As I mentioned at the conclusion of each concert, events like these are a team effort. I sincerely thank:

  • Jo Wales in the office for co-ordinating and managing the ticket sales,
  • Mrs Sullivan, Mr Clancy, Ms Karam, Ms Jones and Mrs White for their outstanding back stage work
  • Mr T and Glenn Bryden for ensuring the hall was set / decorated, and the lighting ensured all students could be showcased in the best possible way.

Finally, I acknowledge Mrs Kelly Ready for the countless hour of preparation that went into creating the sound and video displays. Due to the department’s system limitations, much of this work needed to be completed after hours. Mrs Ready’s expertise and skills provided a wonderful backdrop for our student and really showcased the event. Thanks Kelly for an amazing job!

All funds raised from the concert will be used to enhance the school’s technology and STEM programs. We sincerely thank everyone who attended and supported this year’s concert series.

Griffith University’s STEAM Cup Final

Last Friday, Mr Mullaly and 16 students participated in the Griffith University’s STEAM Cup final. Due to this event clashing with interschool sport, we added a number of new faces to the team. Many of these students contributed in our school being awarded second place at the Merrimac State High School’s STEAM Cup in March.

Mr Mullaly was once again extremely impressed with how our students represented our school. The day involved our students undertaking a number of STEAM challenges. In the water wheel challenge, one of our teams had a failure with their first design, which left them with no sticky tape for a second attempt. Impressively though they were able to engineer a solution that used no tape. Their design still completed a respectable 20 rotations (without sticky tape). In the plane flying challenge, Mr Mullay was impressed to see one of our team’s design 2 separate planes, one built for distance and one built for accuracy to give themselves the best shot at the available points. Most teams just picked their “best” design and flew that.

Unfortunately, our pasta bridge challenge hit some major obstacles and a last minute emergency redesign didn’t go as planned. The students kept their heads up and, spirits high, finished the day 5th overall with big grins on their faces.

This was once again a tremendous achievement for our school. I acknowledge and congratulate Mr Mullaly and our students who represented our school so well. I look forward to hearing how our well our students perform in their up and coming Merrimac State High School First Lego League Scrimmage and the First Lego League regional event in Ballina later in Term 4.

Parent / Teacher Interviews

With Term 1 almost completed, I would like to acknowledge the hard work that our teaching staff have put into supporting your child to achieve excellence. Our school’s vision of “Striving for Excellence” is evident in each and every classroom. Our teachers have worked extremely hard to establish strong lines of communications with each parent. Our teaching team was energised by the large percentage of parents who attended our Term 3 Parent / Teacher interviews. I am confident that the outcomes from these meetings will support all of our students to achieve their personal learning goals in term 4. I trust you will join with me in acknowledging and thanking our dedicated teaching staff members for their efforts during term 3.

National Health and Physical Education (NHPE) Day

Did you know that Australian school children rank among the worst in the world when it comes to their physical activity levels? The National Health and Physical Education (HPE) Day has been designed to raise awareness of, and advocate for, a greater focus of HPE in our schools. This day highlights the wonderful way that Miss Smith supports students to gain a better knowledge and understanding of how to lead active and healthy lifestyles.

Last Thursday 12th September, Miss Smith co-ordinated our first NHPE Day. The theme of this day was Good for Children, Good for Schools and Good for Communities. This amazing event was extremely well supported by parents, teachers and most importantly our students. A number of independent sporting developmental officers also supported this event. I sincerely thank Miss Smith for co-ordinating all of these developmental officers and the entire event.

Junior School Activities

Every break the Year 1 and 2 students have been enjoying new games and activities in the Junior Undercover Area. There are many activities to choose from including Marble Run, Snakes and Ladders, Matchbox cars, Hot wheels car mat, wooden train track with trains, bowling and Lego to name just a few. All students in Year 1 and 2 are invited to play, learn and develop appropriate social skills in the process of having fun.

I am also running a Kids Club in my room on Mondays (second break) and Thursdays (first break), again to encourage play and social skills. The motto for Kids Club is “If you come alone, you leave with a friend.”

Mrs Sullivan’s Letterbox

This term, I have a wonderful new letterbox in front of my room, next to my door. It is out every day and I have been encouraging all the students in years Prep to Year 2 to write me a letter. If I receive a letter from a student, I always reply, often with a question to encourage further writing. To date I have had close to approximately 100 letters! A great effort, keep writing!

Warm Regards
Mrs Sullivan

It is a privilege that our students earn and final activities such as the ‘Big Day Out’ require trust, independence, self-discipline and the ability to make great choices. All Year 6 students will take home on Tuesday 8 October week 1 term 4 a behavioural contract that must be signed and returned to the class teacher by Friday 11 October.

TERM 3 WRAP UP

Thank you students and families for a busy and rewarding Term 3. Enjoy the break and recharge as Term 4 is shaping up to be even bigger and better!

Term 4 Events (thus far)

October 14/15 – Student Concerts for 2020 Instrumental Recruitment
October 25 – Day for Daniel Performance
October 26 – Nerang Library Community Performance
November 7 – Music ‘Count Us In’ Performances
December 2 – End of Semester Concert

2020 – THE YEAR OF MAKING MUSIC

‘Music performance teaches young people to conquer fear and to take risks. Dealing with the ‘butterflies’ early and often makes performance tasks less of a problem later. Risk-taking is essential if a child is to fully develop to his or her full potential’.

Why should your child learn a musical instrument in 2020?

  • Learning music significantly facilitates development in Mathematics and English, both oral and written.
  • Learning music enhances general memory and concentration.
  • Children who learn music tend to handle stress more easily.
  • Students who have regular music lessons are inclined to learn foreign languages much more easily.
  • Children learning music tend to develop superior social skills and to manage their time more effectively.
  • Music primes the brain for learning

We currently have a number of positions available for 2020 in both the Strings and Band programs. We are particularly seeking students interested in learning – French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, trumpet, saxophone, cello and double bass. Expression of Interest forms will be available in Term 4 from the Music Room.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND REMEMBER TO PRACTISE OFTEN!

Have a great rest and we look forward to an exciting Term 3!

Yours in Music
Ms Katheryn Jones
