Principal Report

We welcome back to our Year 2-6 students and their parents this week. I join with our entire school team in warmly welcoming your child back. We have all missed having every student at school and we look forward to reengaging with them as they return to school routines.

Thank you!!!!! WE have done it!!!! Congratulations to ALL staff, parents and students for what you have done, what you have achieved, what you have learnt, what you have overcome, and what you have had to change. Each of us has gone through a learning curve and developed new skills during this time. To the parents –thank you for your patience, your eagerness and supporting your child through this time with their learning at home. I know this has been difficult for some and I congratulate you for continuing to persevere. To the staff, thank you for accepting the changes – timetables, duties, cleaning schedule, teaching platforms, the connectivity issues, PLUS, PLUS, PLUS… it is endless! THANK YOU!!! |
P&C Day 22 May 2020
P&C Day occurred on Friday 22 May, which is celebrated during National Volunteer Week. This was the perfect opportunity to acknowledge and thank our stellar P&C. I would like to thank them for their generous volunteer work and the amazing contributions they make to our school community.
On Friday, I had the pleasure meeting our P&C Executive. It is evident that improving outcomes for all students at Worongary is key on their improvement agenda for this school. Thank you again for all that you do for our school community.

National Simultaneous Storytime
Worongary State School participated in the National Simultaneous Storytime on Wednesday 27 May. This is the 20th year that schools, libraries, preschools, childcare centres, family homes and many other places around the country, read a picture book written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator.
This year I felt privileged to read Whitney and Britney the Chicken Divas, Written and illustrated by Lucinda Gifford, in front of your stunning tree in the library. This was filmed and classes were able to listen to it during the day. Thank you Ms Connor for again organising this event.
Road safety is everyone’s responsibility
The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is committed to ensuring road safety around schools. As restrictions ease and all students are welcomed back to school, there will be an increase in traffic and pedestrian movement around our school, so driving safely around school zones will be even more important. Ensuring the safety of children travelling to and from school, walking or cycling, by school bus or private vehicle, is everyone’s responsibility.
Kiss and Go Zone

Parents are being encouraged to use the stop, drop and go (kiss and go) zone, when dropping off and collecting their children at school. The daily drop off and pick up can be stressful, but it should always be safe. Ensuring children’s safety in and around school zones and educating them on safe street practices, is a top priority. Parents are being encouraged to use these zones rather than walking their children into school. These zones are in place so a vehicle can stop for a short period of time to drop off or to collect children, moving on immediately to allow other drivers to use the zone.
When used correctly, the drop and go zones are very safe and effective, helping reduce traffic congestion around schools. Remember:
- Queue and stay in your car
- Wait until your children arrive - ensure seat belts are secure, then leave the zone safely.
- It is a 2-minute loading zone – if your children are not able to be loaded within two minutes, drive out of the zone and re-join the queue.
- Move out of the zone if you do not wish to re-join the queue and find a park elsewhere.
- Be considerate and do not overstay your time in the zone.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
Our school’s Positive Behaviour for Learning focus for last fortnight has been doing our best. Mrs Clarke and our staff have discussed the importance of students:

- having a go during class
- encouraging others to do their best
- positive thinking about your own learning be it at school or at home
- doing your best! That is all we ask for in every student in our school.
Thank you again for such a warm welcome to your school.
Warm regards,
Adam Brandt

Dear Worongary Sate School families
We are very excited to have all our students back from May 25. Settling back into the routine may take a day or two. Teachers will meet our students at the gates before school and at the end of the day to ensure they exit safely. Boys and girls are asked to check their uniforms, have they got hats, healthy lunches, water bottles and best manners?
Parents and Carers please discuss with your child/ren our three school rules and expectations

The Worongary State School, rules are:
I am Respectful
I am a Learner
I am Safe
This set of three rules is aimed at making Worongary a safe and happy school in which learning

and teaching can occur most effectively. The rules by promote and encouraging appropriate choices in all learning and play situations.

Looking forward to the remainder of Term 2 and beyond,
Kind Regards
Ms Kaia
Read and Grow Update
- Too return soon

Read and Grow is a fun interactive story sharing program for parents and children 3-5 year old children who are not yet attending school.
Throughout the program we will learn to listen, sing songs, share books and play together. This is a great way to develop your child’s oral language skills and help prepare them for school.
Currently, Read and Grow cannot take place due to COVID-19 restrictions. We will let you know when we are able to resume sessions
For more information or to ask any questions, please contact Katie Huggard via email: khugg2@eq.edu.au
The program was put together by a speech language pathologist and early childhood teachers. Each week we will read a story and develop language skills through reading, songs, play and craft - practicing the skills we know are important for school readiness such as:

- focusing on key words and concepts
- asking and answering questions
- noticing the print and the written word in the story or title
For more information or to ask any questions, please contact Katie Huggard via email: khugg2@eq.edu.au

SP Worongary Newsletter 25/05/2020: Maria Bamford (Coordinator)
At School Plus Worongary we have been enjoying observing the huge numbers of Blue Tiger and Blue Moon butterflies currently around the Gold Coast. We have also had an abundance of Lily Moth caterpillars around the school. Bug catching and exploring the caterpillar environments has been an ongoing activity led by the Year 1 boys. This interest has led to much discussion and research around what we are seeing and has culminated in a beautiful Life Cycle of a Butterfly display.

The School Plus Worongary Leader Group continues to grow. The Leaders are working hard to assist around the service where needed but to also touch base fortnightly for a Leader Meeting, where we discuss projects, member nominations, creating a Leader Newsletter and any other relevant projects and tasks around the service. We are very proud of the wonderful role modelling of school/service values that each School Plus Leader reflects.

Cooking Club continues to be popular with the children. The children have been learning about ingredients and methods as well as coming up with some delicious end products. Mr Ian has been leading the making Jam Drop biscuits, while Ms Angelique lead Honey Joys. The children continue to add ideas to the service’s ‘Great Ideas’ book.

Science Club also continues to be popular. The current Science Club project is around germs/bacteria and what happens if we have not washed our hands regularly and effectively. The children created a number of bread samples where they had used hand sanitiser, soap and water, dirty hands etc and will monitor to see how and when the bacteria grow. This is a great science activity that really reinforces the need and importance of hand washing. This is particularly relevant during the COVID-19 pandemic.

At School Plus we use our own paper-based Dojo reward system. Last week we drew the winners of our mid-term Dojo hamper and Kmart voucher. Lenny won the hamper while Tyson won the Kmart voucher. Two very deserving winners that also happen to be fantastic service leaders.

Whilst we are stuck in the new world of Covid-19 we have decided to revamp our tuckshop. Competition time!! The competition has been extended and will run until the end of Term Two, Friday 26th June 2020. What you need to enter:
- A new Name: - It’s currently called 'The Delta Deli' but we want something catchy that also relates to our Indigenous heritage/ learning vine logo.
- A design for the front of our tuckshop. Yes we are keen to revamp and pretty this up too.
- You may also list a signature dish (related to your design) that you want to see on the menu. Make sure you include a catchy name.
- All entries to be scanned and emailed to pandc@worongaryss.eq.edu.au. Please include in subject line TUCKSHOP REVAMP- LASTNAME, first name Initial and Class.
- The winning entry will not only see the revamp of our tuckshop using their design, but will also receive a meal deal to the value of $10 every Friday for 5 weeks in Term 3! Oh My Gosh!
School Banking
With the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus, the health, safety and wellbeing of our community volunteers remains our priority. For that reason we have made the decision to keep the School Banking program on hold/suspended until normal operation of our school resumes. We understand more than ever, children are probably earning more money at home for doing those extra chores and that you would like to continue their school banking deposits however we apologise for the interruption to your children’s financial education and savings.
Containers for Change
We are in discussion on when we can recommence our Containers for Change during these Covid-19 Times. Please use the SCHEME ID: C10179198 at the depot to ensure all monies raised go to our school. Thankyou.
DID YOU KNOW??
That we are also collecting plastic bottle tops and bread tags to turn them into prosthetic limbs and wheel chairs? There is a clearly labelled box outside the office, where students can drop off any collected tops and tags. Please ensure that they have been cleaned and dried before dropping them in the box.
Mother’s Day E-Store Stall
This was the first time we conducted an online stall and it was a success. We hope all the lovely Mums out there enjoyed their gifts the children selected and that you had an amazing time celebrating with family. It was a lovely day all round. Thank you for your support during this time.
Air Conditioning I Block
In combination with the Local School Community Grant of $18K towards our school air conditioning and the Worongary SS P&C Air conditioning Funds, we were able to get all the Year 6 and the Year 5/6 composite classrooms air conditioned. However, due to the Covid-19 effects, we are still waiting on one vital part as so it can be up and running soon. We will keep you informed. Unfortunately it is out of our hands and we are at the mercy of the manufacturer.
Colour Explosion Fun Run Friday the 7 August 2020.
At this stage the Colour Explosion Fun Run is still predicted to be commencing on the Friday 7 August 2020. The Worongary SS P&C will be sending home sponsorship and participation forms by the end ofTerm 2. Due to the Covid-19 Environment the Colour Explosion Fun Run will be assessed weekly on whether or not it will need to be postponed to a later date. We understand this may cause problems for families to attend the fantastic colourful day, however we do appreciate your understanding. We will keep you updated throughout this time. Rest assured we will try our best to still have the fun filled day, especially by the end of the school year.

- While the eating and playtime remain swapped, pre-ordered frozen treats can be collected at both breaks but please let your children know that this must be done in the playtime not the eating time or basket collection time.
Online Ordering
Just a reminder that online ordering profiles need to be updated manually by parents each year. Please note that Tuckshop and Uniform Shop online ordering profiles must be updated separately.
|
If you haven’t already used online ordering, you can register an account with SchoolShop Online by following the link on the school website (at the bottom of the homepage under Quick Links) or by inputting Worongary in the search box at schoolshoponline.net.au Please note that Tuckshop and Uniform Shop online ordering profiles must be set up separately. |
Key things to note about online ordering are:
- Online ordering is great for busy parents. Orders can be placed online at your convenience.

‘Around the World in 5 Days’ Meal Deals
The ‘Around the World in 5 Days’ Meal Deals were a hit, with some students zooming around the world in a whirlwind while others paced themselves over the four weeks. Thank you to all those that took part in the fun. The four weeks flew by.

Uniform Shop Operations
Please note the following points in regards to Uniform Shop operations at this time:
- The Uniform Shop remains closed for in-store purchases
- Online ordering is available, with orders checked and processed daily
- 9:00am is the online ordering cut off time for same day processing. Orders made after this time will be processed the next day.
- From an administrative point of view, Uniform online ordering is structured differently from Tuckshop. If you are ordering for more than one child, the orders come through together. Therefore, all items will be sent to the eldest child. If you prefer for each child to receive their own items, please add a comment to advise this.
- A yellow note will be sent to your child’s classroom via the Tuckshop basket to advise when their uniform order is ready for collection from the Tuckshop. Please let your child know to keep an eye out for the yellow note.
- If you urgently require your child to try on uniforms for sizes, please contact us to arrange an appointment. The Uniform Shop phone is currently unattended but we check messages daily so please leave a message so we can assist you. The direct dial number for the Uniform Shop is (07) 5502 4485.
Online Ordering
Just a reminder that online ordering profiles need to be updated manually by parents each year and that Tuckshop and Uniform Shop online ordering profiles must be updated separately.
We have been receiving many uniform orders that have out of date classes listed for the students. Please note that this can cause delays in getting the items to your child/ren. If you think you have already updated your child’s class for this year please check again before submitting your order as you may be remembering updating the class in their Tuckshop profile, rather than Uniform.
