From the Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers,
What a semester!
What a term and what a semester! All I can say to you is congratulations. Congratulations for learning a new way of learning at the beginning of the term. Many of the students were learning on the computer and learning through a range of online programs. Some had workbooks that they were completing and some of had both. Congratulations on your children’s persistence and their effort when learning from home for part of this term.
Congratulations to our wonderful class teachers who also had to learn new skills teaching our students from behind a computer screen. Our teachers worked so hard this term. We are all very proud of them.
Congratulations also to our parents and carers who were also learning new skills in supporting the children to learn from home. Thank you for your ongoing support!
Our final Lego Assembly

Sadly, we held our last Lego Assembly this week. Next term we will go back to the usual assemblies in the Hall for Seniors and Juniors. We will let you know when you can return to the assemblies and our strategies in meeting physical distancing in the hall.
Mr Mullaly has done a fantastic job in creating the Lego assembly with the school leaders each week as our virtual assembly. This is truly one of the most innovative assemblies I have ever been involved with. Like the School Captains, I have always wanted to be a ‘Lego Man’ and this has come true through Mr Mullaly’s Lego Assemblies. Brilliant work Mr Mullaly!
Under Eights Day
We had a fun celebration with students in Years Prep to Year 2. Students had smiles from ear to ear as they moved through the many activities including: slinky apples, face painting, bubbles, making crowns, playing musical instruments and ten pin bowling to name a few. It was such a fun day – oh to be under eight again.

Good luck Mrs Ready!
Today we say farewell to our special Deputy Principal, Mrs Ready. She has been here for many years supporting each and every student to be the best they can be. Thank you Mrs Ready for your leadership and support of children, staff and families whilst you have been Deputy Principal and Acting Principal of Worongary State School. We wish Mrs Ready the best of luck in her new position as Deputy Principal of the new school being built in Pimpama.
Farewell to Tracey Hocart
I would like to acknowledge the great work of Tracey Hocart who has been acting in our school as Business Manager over the last year. She has been successful in gaining a permanent position as Business Manager at Coombabah State School.
This week, interviews have been held for both the Business Manager position and for the Acting Deputy Principal position. I look forward to announcing these in the next newsletter to the community.
Assessment and Reporting Semester 1, 2020. Schools were provided two options for reporting and assessment for Semester 1, 2020. 1. To report on all subject areas. 2. Report on English, Mathematics and Science, one other Key Learning Areas. Due to the impact on student learning during COVID-19, staff and the P&C have supported the second option to best meet the needs of the students in the school. Thank you again for your support with the Worongary Learning@Home Curriculum.
Term 3 COVID-19 Guidelines
A letter has been emailed to all parents regarding next term and how we are reducing some of the restrictions within the school. Please look in your inbox for the latest email regarding guidelines for Worongary State School.
Sport Returning
We are hoping to see a return to Interschool sport in Term 4 of this year. We are currently unsure exactly what this will look like, but in preparation for the possibility, sports trials will take place in Weeks 3 and 4 to select teams. More information will be provided once we know the details about what interschool sport will look like. All District and Regional Athletics has been cancelled, however we will be endeavouring to hold a fun sports carnival within the school later in the semester.
Music ensembles returning
With restrictions easing, the school music ensembles will be returning to rehearsals next term. Students will be rehearsing in the Flexible Learning Space and having lessons in the hall to ensure physical distancing requirements can be met. More information will be provided to parents by our Instrumental Music teachers.
Cleaners Day – Monday 15 June

Our school cleaners play an extremely vital role in keeping our schools safe. This year, in particular, it's more important than ever to acknowledge the hardworking efforts of our school cleaners in keeping our education facilities healthy and hygienic.
Thank you so much to the Worongary State School Cleaners!! The work that you do in our school is truly appreciated!

Read and Grow Update

Read and Grow is a fun interactive story sharing program for parents and children 3-5 year old children who are not yet attending school.
Throughout the program we will learn to listen, sing songs, share books and play together. This is a great way to develop your child’s oral language skills and help prepare them for school.
Currently, Read and Grow cannot take place due to COVID-19 restrictions. We will let you know when we are able to resume sessions
For more information or to ask any questions, please contact Katie Huggard via email: khugg2@eq.edu.au

The program was put together by a speech language pathologist and early childhood teachers. Each week we will read a story and develop language skills through reading, songs, play and craft - practicing the skills we know are important for school readiness such as:
- focusing on key words and concepts
- asking and answering questions
- noticing the print and the written word in the story or title
For more information or to ask any questions, please contact Katie Huggard via email: khugg2@eq.edu.au
Regards Katie Huggard, Prep Teacher

Just a quick email to inform you that school run 3387 has had its departure time moved to 10 minutes later. Drivers have been handing this notice out to students this week.

School Plus

School Plus Worongary is busy finishing up a successful Term 2 and Educators are busy planning for the June/July Vacation Care.
Throughout Term 2 the School Plus Leaders have continued to work hard to support the service and the children attending. The main projects this term have been the development of the School Plus Leader Newsletter which includes, Jokes, Student Profiles, Leadership Update, Oli’s Corner and other worthwhile reading. The other focus for the Leader group has been our School Plus Family profile book. The Leaders completed ‘All About Me’ information sheets with the younger children. We then, in ‘Group times’, share this information and ask and add what others like about the person. A photo is attached, and the profiles are added to the School Plus Family book.

Physical activity has been a focus at School Plus with activities including Boomerang throwing, frisbee golf, relays and races. Our focus has been to attempt to engage traditionally inactive children into games and activities that are new and noncompetitive.
Beyblades have continued to be a popular activity at School Plus. This has culminated in a Bey Blade Competition. Chayse and Caelan designed posters to advertise the competition, challenge sheets were created and the competition went off without a hitch and was enjoyed by all. All children participating received a certificate. Parker won the competition and was presented with a Bey Blade.

Lego construction & design continues to be a favourite activity. The children at School Plus continue to find new ways to use and build with Lego.

Despite the challenges around COVID-19, overall, it has been a successful Term 2 at School Plus Worongary.

Stencil Upgrades
The P & C Association is excited to announce that we will be funding the upgrade of the current stencilling around the school. Due to wear and tear the current stencilling is faded and worn. We hope to have the work completed in time for when the students return in Term 3.
Tuckshop Freezer
The P & C Association was successful in gaining a $5,000 community grant. This money was allocated to purchase a much needed new freezer for the tuckshop. The current one has had several repairs but unfortunately became unusable. Michelle and Jasmine have been working hard working with only one small freezer. The tuckshop will have the new freezer delivered and installed by the end of term.
School Banking
We hope with further easing of restrictions that school banking can recommence soon. Unfortunately at this stage school banking is still suspended. We will keep the school community updated on a recommencement date.

Subway Day – Friday 26 June
Thank you to the parents and students who got their Subway orders in before the 9am cut-off time this morning. Unfortunately, we were unable to accept late orders, but for those who missed out this term, rest assured that we plan for these days to return.
Tuckshop Returns to Normal Operations Next Term
I am pleased to advise that we are returning to normal operations next term, resulting in three key changes.
Lunch Time and eating time Swap
We will be returning to children having their play time before the eating time. Parents, please note that this means pre-ordered frozen items may only be collected at second break.
Over Counter Playtime Sales
Students in Years 1-6 may now return to purchasing items from the Over Counter Menu at both play times.
Volunteers are permitted in the Tuckshop
We are very pleased that volunteers are now permitted back in the Tuckshop. I will be in contact with our current volunteers and those new volunteers who have already registered their interest in volunteering with us by the end of the term to organise a roster.
For any new Mums, Dads, Grandparents and Carers interested in becoming a Tuckshop volunteer on a weekly, fortnightly or even monthly basis, we encourage you to come visit us and find out more. There is always something to be done in the Tuckshop and if you love a fast paced and fun environment, this could be for you.
Please call on the number above or stop by and speak to myself or Jasmine to find out more.
“Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they have the heart”
Elizabeth Andrew
We have received some feedback concerning children receiving their tuckshop late.
Some of the reasons for this have been outside our control and, while we do our absolute best to run to schedule, there are times that we unfortunately have run into delays.
I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to parents whose children were affected.
We are pleased to now return to normal Tuckshop operations as this will get us back on track in terms of keeping on schedule. However, as some mornings can still be a push for time Iif you order online, try to do so the night before or before 8am in the morning if possible. This gives us a chance to have a sneak peak at orders for the day, providing us with a head start for the day.
Thank you for your support, patience and understanding with the ups and downs encountered as we navigated through this topsy turvy time.
Happy Holidays to all. Please stay safe and enjoy the break.
