Principal Report

Dear parents and carers,

Book Week 2020

It was absolutely amazing seeing the students and staff participate in this year’s Book Week Celebrations. The costumes were brilliant and classes did very well meeting the 2020 theme, ‘Curious Creatures, Wild Minds’ or their individual class themes. Also, the door displays were very creative. Thank you parents and carers for your efforts in supporting this event and creating your children’s costumes and adding your vote on the school’s Facebook page for the Community Choice Best Decorated Door Award.

There is overwhelming evidence that supports the importance of reading and its link with educational success. As Dr Seuss quoted so eloquently in I can Read With My Eyes Shut, “the more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that your learn, the more places you’ll go.”

A huge congratulations our Teacher/Librarian, Mrs Conner, and the staff members who were part of the Book Week Committee, for all of the efforts and great communication around this event. Also I would like to thank Mr Mullaly for sharing photos and videos on the school’s Facebook Page.

2020 Teacher Aide Appreciation Week 31 August – 4 September

Teacher Aides play a vital role in supporting both students and staff in our school. I would like to sincerely thank and acknowledge our hardworking and dedicated team of Teacher Aides for supporting students and staff at Worongary State School.

Thank you to each member of our strong team of Teacher Aides for all the work you do in our school – you truly make a difference!

All interviews will be held either by phone or in classrooms. For more information, please refer to the letter sent out last Friday and to class letters sent out Monday of this week.

Music Scholarships

Congratulations choristers, Chloe and Cooper! These students have been awarded a full scholarship to the Gold Coast City Choir! They will practise each week with like-minded children from all over the region. Chloe and Cooper have shown great commitment to the choir and their musical studies for many years and are enthusiastic, dedicated musicians. We look forward to your upcoming performances!

Virtual Book Week Activities

Dress Up parades

TUESDAY Sept 1 Junior School (Prep, Yrs 1 & 2)

THURSDAY Sept 3 Senior School (Yrs 3-6)

Children can dress up as their favourite book character, or base their costume on their class Book Week theme. Each year level was given a ‘Curious Creature’ habitat (Prep – Farms, Yr 1- Savannah/Grassland, Yr 2 Jungle, Yr 3 – Rainforest, Yr 4 – Desert/Outback, Yr 5 – Underwater, Yr 6 – Polar/Arctic).

Please ensure that student costumes are appropriate for school. Please see Mr Brandt’s message regarding this.

All parades will be filmed and uploaded to our Facebook page and Class Dojo School Story on the afternoon of each parade.

Both choirs and school bands will be performing also, and these will be uploaded as well each afternoon.

As we are unable to have you visit our school Art Gallery, we are bringing it to you.

A short video of each class’ art work will be sent out to you via Dojo and we will also upload these to our school website.

Class art work and door displays were based around the class themes, around the Book week theme, or about a specific book.

Colouring Competition winners will be announced on assembly in Week 9.

You can still vote for the best decorated door, as we have done in previous years, via our school Facebook page. Voting will be open from Monday, and close next Friday. One vote per family.

Book Club

Final issue for the term was handed out last week. All orders are to be handed to the Library, or completed online via LOOP ordering, by TUESDAY Sept 8.

Unfortunately no late orders can be accepted to allow sufficient time for the order to be despatched to the school before the holidays.

Many thanks.

Being a Respectful Student

We will:

  • Keep hands and feet to ourselves
  • Play fairly
  • Speak respectfully

Congratulations to our many students who have worked well and had an enjoyable third term. Book week and some sensational costumes was a great way to celebrate our love of reading.

A big thank you to our parents and carers who ensure our students arrive on time each day prepared for learning. Many of your children’s positive moments have been shared and celebrated through personal acknowledgment, Learning Vine Awards, and our DOJO badge ceremony at assembly.

With our third term drawing to a close,

Wishing you all a safe Spring break.
Kind Regards
Ms Kaia.

Tennis Competition

Earlier in the year, Ms Smith, our PE teacher, entered our school into a competition through ANZ Tennis Hot Shots (Tennis Australia), where the first prize was a tennis racquet for every Prep student.

We are very excited to let you know that Worongary State School won first prize.

On Wednesday 19 August, members from Tennis Hot Shots came to the school to present the racquets to our children. Kim Birrell, a Gold Coast born and bred professional tennis player, spoke to the students and answered some excellent questions from the audience, before presenting racquets to representatives from each class. Kim is highly ranked in Australia and plays on the world tour. She has represented Australia in the Federation Cup.

We were also very lucky to receive some vouchers for a free tennis lesson with a local sponsor, Michael Mitchell from KDV Sport. We hope this encourages our Prep children to get out and be active and maybe take up tennis as a sport.

School Plus

Students at School Plus Worongary are thriving in Term 3! Attendance is increasing and all new children are fitting into the service culture beautifully! We have also welcomed new staff to the team, Josh, Loz, Sharon and Samantha have all commenced at School Plus. Between them they bring a wealth of knowledge and experience and have already made a positive impact.

School Plus will be operating all day on Friday 4th September to support the Worongary State School Student Free Day. The service is having a Birthday Celebrations themed day as an opportunity to celebrate all birthdays. There will be exciting games, cooking activities, decoration making and of course party food! We look forward to this massive celebration.

At School Plus we celebrated Science Week, which included a number of activities including slime making, crystal making, walking water and invisible soda. To extend on our interest in bugs, butterflies and insects we have downloaded and registered for Questa Game. The aim of Questa Game is to help to protect biodiversity. It enlists the help of communities around Australia to assist in recording new and existing species. This information assists the CSIRO and Global Biodiversity Information Facility researchers to understand and better manage and protect biodiversity. Once photos are uploaded, the children receive feedback from experts on their sightings. The children were excited to get started and have been using the iPads in all sessions to try and find interesting sightings to add.

Clubs have become an important part of our School Plus Program. As part of Science Week, we had Collector Club in the Hall. This was exciting for the many children who brought in trading cards, money and coins, insects and butterflies, snow globes, mini books and the beautiful collections of crystals and rocks.

The children set up their displays on tables with signs and information about their collections. Any interested children could then go around to discuss collections and learn about various aspects and information new to them. The crystal displays with their meanings and power was a very busy area. Jack and Kirra’s mum also donated a number of crystals that the children could keep, making this very popular.

September Vacation Care is nearly upon us, so Educators are busy preparing a variety of quality activities, theme days, and incursions including candle making and a giant inflatable obstacle course as well as excursions to Eco Park Fishing and Art of Illusions. Bookings are open now, so don’t miss out on the fantastic program we have put together!
