From the Principal

Thank you for such a great term. I have enjoyed watching and hearing of the great work students are producing in their classrooms.

Speaking out Competition

This week, I had the privilege of watching, and absolutely enjoying, the class representative at the Speaking Out Competition. The courage, quality of speeches and effort these students demonstrated was truly spectacular. Parents and teachers, you should be very proud. Congratulations to all students for their efforts leading into this event.

The winners were:

Prep – Kate
Year 1 – Ashlee
Year 2 - Harry

Year 3 – Paige
Year 4 – Ellie
Year 5 – Sienna
Year 6 – Samara

Working with Dr Lynn Sharratt

On Tuesday last week, the leadership team and I participated in a Zoom call with Dr Lynn Sharratt, Assistant Regional Directors, regional office staff and local school leadership teams from Gavan, Park Lake and Highland Reserve State Schools. We heard and shared our current school directions, successes, challenges, our staff’s commitment to reading improvement and posed questions directly to Dr Sharratt to support future direction in our school.

We received very positive feedback around our current school improvement agenda and processes in supporting students in their reading. I look forward to continuing leading Worongary State School in Term 4.

Updated stencilling from the P&C

Thank you to the P&C for updating the faded stencils and lines around the school. This project cost over $3000 and has made a huge difference to the paths and walkways. Thank you to the community for supporting our P&C at the many fundraisers and tuckshop purchases throughout the year. All of these valuable funds support projects like this at Worongary. Thank you P&C!

Congratulations Mrs White

It is with excitement to share some news regarding Mrs White and her future leadership opportunity next term. Mrs White has been offered the Acting Principal of Springwood Central State School for Term 4, 2020. This is very exciting news for Mrs White and reflects her great leadership at Worongary State School.

Congratulations to Ms Clarke on being successful in taking on the Acting Deputy Principal role for Term 4, 2020. Ms Clarke has been the engagement and behaviour teacher, supporting all classes throughout the school. Ms Clarke has also been on the leadership team and a part of the decision making processes. Ms Smith will move into the engagement and behaviour teacher role and Miss Merideth will continue as PE teacher into Term 4.

Congratulations Mrs White and Mrs Clarke on your promotions.

Kiss and Go Loading Zone

Thank you to the parents for your patience at drop off and pick up times. I have shared your feedback to the Council regarding safety concerns and ideas to help make pick up and drop off more efficient. I have reminded the students to quickly move to the correct collection area after school also to assist at the end of the day.

I am pleased to say the Gold Coast City Council have been amazing and very interested in helping improve this space. Two large signs have been added outlining the use of the Kiss and Go Loading Zone.

A Good Read

Sarah Eccleston, one of our parents, has just published a beautiful children’s book titled “Have you Seen a Tree for Me”? It is beautifully written and illustrated. Mrs Eccleston generously donated a signed copy to our library. Children can borrow this book, but if you would like your own copy, they are available from Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and selected bookshops across the coast.

Please have a safe and enjoyable two week break with your family and friends. I am very much looking forward to seeing you again in Term 4.

This week the Year One’s visited Currumbin Sanctuary. We saw the pelicans and eels being fed, learnt animal names in traditional Yugambeh language, watched many birds do their tricks at the bird show and fed the kangaroos. What a great experience our students had with some outdoor and interactive learning on our excursion.

School Plus

It has been a busy time at School Plus Worongary. We have had a lot of fun during Term 3 and are currently preparing for a fantastic Vacation Care period.

School Plus supported the Student Free day on the 4th of September by offering a full day of care. We used this day to celebrate everyone’s Birthdays. The children enjoyed decorating the service with party balloons, streamers and posters. We cooked Birthday cakes, chocolate crackles and other treats. We also had party games, parachute games and did box sliding on the Oval. We finished the day with a great party and party bags.

Book Week & the importance of reading was marked at the School & School Plus service. The children really enjoyed dressing up as Book Characters and were excited to share the day with their friends.

Collector Club continues to be a popular club at School Plus with children and educators sharing stamp collections, snow globes, antiques, trading cards, Coles books and other interesting items. The group enjoys showcasing their items and finding out more about other people’s interests.

Homework Club has been building, giving children an opportunity to complete their homework including Mathletics, Reading Eggs and Literacy Planet while at School Plus allowing them to spend their time at home with their families.

Box Sliding on the oval has become a School Plus favorite activity. The children have been extending on this by creating their own box cars and using team work to slide on the hills.

This week we have been marking Child Protection Week. We have done this by participating in the Shine a Light on Child Protection Lantern Project as well discussing Child Protection and reinforcing protective behavior messages around the right to ‘Feel safe all of the time’ and that ‘Nothing is so awful you can’t talk about it’. We have discussed trust hands and the importance of sharing when not feeling safe.

We are looking forward to our exciting September Vacation Care program. Email us for more information on the exciting excursions, incursions and other fun activities we have programmed!
