Day for Daniel

Day for Daniel is held every year on the last Friday of October in honour of Daniel Morcombe. Our school again turned out on the oval in a sea of red to support Australia’s largest child safety event.

Day for Daniel is held in schools, workplaces, early childhood centres and public and private events all across the nation.

I shared examples to the students to support them being able to Recognise, React and Report if they ever feel unsafe anywhere or anytime.

I also asked the students to consider the adults in their life who can keep them safe from harm and who can a make a situation safe again for them, who can listen to them, believe in them and will help them.

This year, we are going to add a new buddy bench as a safe place in our school. This will be located on our oval as another place students can go. I shared with the students that it is all of our responsibility to support students who may be sad or may not have anyone to play with that sit on that bench.

I would also like to thank Bunnings at Nerang for donating a large tree to be planted to offer shade for our school.

Thank you everyone for taking part in this very special day. Worongary State School raised over $700 to be donated to the Daniel Morcombe Foundation.

Every child and every student has a right to be safe. Young, old or anywhere in between. Together we can all make a difference.

2021 School Leaders Speeches

Congratulations to all students from year 5 for demonstrating courage and leadership as they presented to the student body their respective speeches for varying leadership positions. Parents, you should be very proud of your children as it takes a huge amount of courage to stand up in front of a large number of staff and students.

I look forward to sharing with you our future 2021 leaders shortly.

Enrol Now for 2021

We are finalising our 2021 enrolments. If you have not yet enrolled or know of families who have not yet enrolled, please contact the office so we can support you/them through the enrolling process.

I truly appreciate the time and effort you placed in your emails and letters – we all want your child to succeed here Worongary.

HEALTH ROOM

Over-the-counter medications

The Department recognises that all medications, including over-the-counter (OTC) medications, e.g. paracetamol or alternative medicines, may be drugs or poisons and may cause side effects. As such, schools are required to receive medical authorisation from a prescribing health practitioner (e.g. doctor, dentist, optometrist, but not a pharmacist) to administer any medication to students, including those bought over-the-counter.

Whilst parents may administer OTC medications to their child without medical authorisation, they are aware of the child’s complete medical history, and are able to provide ongoing, direct supervision for the course of the child’s illness. Due to these circumstances, a parent is also more likely to recognise if their child is having adverse effects and requires immediate medical attention.

The student’s prescribing health practitioner also has the knowledge of the child’s medical history to determine the appropriate OTC medication to administer and is therefore able to determine dosage and provide advice regarding potential side effects or interactions with other medications.

For these reasons, OTC medications will only be administered to students at school if medical authorisation has been received.

SECOND-HAND UNIFORMS WANTED

We are in desperate need of second hand polo shirts in sizes 10, 12 & 14 for our senior school students. If you are having a sort out over the holidays we would very much appreciate your hand-me-downs. We have plenty of smaller sizes for our junior school students should they need them.

UNDIES

We are always in need of undies – especially for little girls. Any hand-me-downs would be greatly appreciated.

THANKS
Kath Welch

Prep A hosted a special visitor!

Recently, Prep A had a visitor named Lalania who has been working with a student in our class. Together they made a digeridoo. They talked all about digeridoos and taught us that only men are allowed to play the digeridoo. Lalania also brought in many indigenous artefacts that the children of Prep A learnt about and explored.

Thank you Lalania for your generosity and teaching us so much about your culture. We thought it was amazing!

The RAK Letter Exchange

Students in 3D wrote letters participating in RAK (Random Acts of Kindness) initiative with 23 different schools around Australia. They form part of an Advent Calendar so every class participating will receive 23 letters to put on their calendar. They then open the RAK as a class and read the letters and participate in the RAK that is included with each letter. Each child will be able to take one of the letters home.

Sporting Celebration: Congratulations to our year 6 touch teams who both made it to the final of the interschool touch competition at Ormeau Woods on Friday October 30th. Student’s effort and skill demonstrated on the day was excellent with the Girls team winning the final and Boys taking out the runner up position in their respective competitions.

Yours in Sport Miss Morgan Meredith

End of Year Instrumental and Choral Concert

A huge congratulations to all the students that performed last week in our End of Year Music Concerts. Samara G and Jasper M did an outstanding job as hosts of the day!

A huge thank you to all the performers, to our wonderful Instrumental Music teachers Ms Auchere and Ms Larmor, our pianist Mrs Dwyer and our Groundsman Mr T for setting up and moving furniture as needed. We dearly hope that next year we will be able to showcase our students hard work with the return of our parents and community at our live concerts.

Thank you to the Year 6 film crew that filmed the performances. These are available for viewing on Class Dojo.

School Plus

Term 4 2020 has progressed extremely quickly at School Plus Worongary with a number of events, projects and clubs. Attendance continues to grow with new enrolments coming through for 2021 already.

School Plus have adjusted their Acknowledgement of Country to reflect the new Worongary State School Acknowledgement of Kombomerri Country. We have continued with our Acknowledgement of land in symbolism loosely based in sign language but have added Kombomerri Country. The children have embraced these changes while continuing to show respect for our first Australians.

This term we have continued to encourage children to send through or bring in photos of their Pets for our School Plus ‘Pet Wall’. These have included a variety of interesting pets from lizards to guinea pigs and turtles as well plenty of dogs and cats.

We have also been encouraging children to celebrate their achievements both big and small to add to our School Plus ‘Wall of Fame’. This includes Sporting team photos, Individual achievements, Certificates including Learning Vine Awards and anything else the children feel proud of. Both of these walls have been created to ensure a sense of belonging in the service.

So far this term School Plus has marked Children’s Week & Day for Daniel. We have also established a Community link with Lifeline Nerang. We were at a loss as to what to do with all our Coles bags each week. After conversations with the children, we decided we could donate them to a charity to use. Mr Ian looked into this and we have started donating them to Lifeline at Nerang. They have been very much appreciated and are being used when people buy things from the store.

Friday Funday has continued to be popular with a weekly ice cream cone and an opportunity to bring in dress up clothes and to play group party games.

School Plus Clubs have continued to gain momentum. The leader-run Sport & Fitness Club on the oval on Thursdays is going well. The leaders are supported by Educator Josh to run drills, warmups before having a game of soccer or game of their choice. Science and STEM Clubs continue to be popular with the children creating Ooblek, Kenetic sand and moon rocks. Collector Club and Cooking Club also continue to get a lot of interest.

The children have been enjoying dramatic play. Each week we choose a different theme and set up outside. They have enjoyed playing restaurants, shops, doctors & nurses, post office and hairdressers. These opportunities are not solely for younger children and it is pleasing to see a number of older children wanting to participate.

So far it has been a fantastic start to Term 4. We look forward to what else the term will bring, book now to join in on the fun at before and after School Care!

Seniors Shirts for Year 6

Year 6 Seniors Shirts for 2021 are now available for ordering at a cost of $40.00 each. This shirt is included as part of the everyday uniform for Year 6 students only. A hard copy of the order form was sent home with current Grade 5 students this week and a copy is also attached here. This form contains all the information you need but should you have any questions please feel free to contact us on the number listed above.

NOTE ABOUT SIZING: The Seniors Shirts are different in size to the regular school polo’s as they are made by a different supplier. We highly recommend that your child try the shirt when ordering or at the back to school open days next year. These shirts are the same as the music polo’s so if you have a music polo handy at home you could use this as a size guide as well.

Kind regards,

Michelle Lee
