Newsletter Articles

From the Principal

Welcome to the second last newsletter for 2020. The last 2 and half weeks of this term are certainly action packed with camps, swimming lessons, excursion and end of year events. I would like to commend the teachers for their immense efforts in planning these events, at the end of the year. These events are about the students, especially in an extremely challenging 2020.

Captains 2021

Last week, I was privileged to offer leadership positions to year 5 students and again, there is a high calibre of students to lead Worongary students into the future. Next year, we will hold a special leadership assembly in term one to acknowledge these students. Congratulations to all students who applied to be a leader in 2021.

Colour Run

What a fantastic day! Thank you to our P&C for organising and the volunteers assisting in this huge event! Thank you to the school community for your participation be it the local Police and Firefighters and to our families for assisting in fundraising for our school. The P&C will be directing the profits to enhance the playgrounds in the school. Thank you also to the teachers for getting involved, some even running with their class, wearing the endless colour powder.

NAIDOC Week

The ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’ theme for NAIDOC Week 2020, embraces the history of our country, which began with the very first footprints belonging to First Nations people. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats and first artists.

To support and celebrate the support and celebrate the Indigenous students and wider community here at Worongary State School, all students across each year level participated in classroom activities. The whole school also attended a special assembly on Friday where the choir performed and dances from Tribal Experience entertained the students and staff.

Collect your child’s medication from school

Please remember to collect your child’s medication from school before the holidays begin and store them correctly at home.

Learn more about storage of medications such as asthma inhalers and adrenaline auto-injectors (for example, EpiPens) at the NPS Medicinewise website.

You should also check the expiry dates before taking medications back to school after the holidays.

As the end of year events are just around the corner I wanted to let parents/caregivers know details of these events.

First Lego League

STEM – Update from Natasha Mills, Worongary State School STEM Captain for 2020

I will be telling you about my experience at First Lego League. This year Worongary was lucky enough to enter three teams into the competition. Team 1 consisted of Jasper, Schuma, Tyson, Samara, Lenka, Nina and I.

Term 2 consisted of Joe, Rachael, Mia, Sienna.L, Oscar and Isla but sadly Oscar and Isla were not able to make it to the competition. Team 3, our amazing grade 5 team, was made up of 4 wonderful students, Jayden, Chloe, Kalani and Olivia. At First Lego League you participate in the robot game which is where you code your robot to solve missions. There is also the innovation project which is where you show the judges your robot that you designed for the theme which this year was “Replay”, meaning exercise, sport and getting more people active. After competing in these competitions, there’s another category to discuss.

The Core Values is about teamwork- if the judges see you working well with other people they will give you points for your Core Values. This year Team 2 got the Core Values trophy and on top of that they finished 3rd overall meaning that they get to go into nationals on December 5th at Sheldon College.

First Lego League introduced a new trophy that goes to the best mentor/coach award, coaches can win this by their students voting for them and providing the judges with a valid reason why they should get this award. Mr Mullaly was one lucky teacher because he got the Coach Award.

HEALTH ROOM

Over-the-counter medications

The Department recognises that all medications, including over-the-counter (OTC) medications, e.g. paracetamol or alternative medicines, may be drugs or poisons and may cause side effects. As such, schools are required to receive medical authorisation from a prescribing health practitioner (e.g. doctor, dentist, optometrist, but not a pharmacist) to administer any medication to students, including those bought over-the-counter.

Whilst parents may administer OTC medications to their child without medical authorisation, they are aware of the child’s complete medical history, and are able to provide ongoing, direct supervision for the course of the child’s illness. Due to these circumstances, a parent is also more likely to recognise if their child is having adverse effects and requires immediate medical attention.

The student’s prescribing health practitioner also has the knowledge of the child’s medical history to determine the appropriate OTC medication to administer and is therefore able to determine dosage and provide advice regarding potential side effects or interactions with other medications.

For these reasons, OTC medications will only be administered to students at school if medical authorisation has been received.

SECOND-HAND UNIFORMS WANTED

We are in desperate need of second hand polo shirts in sizes 10, 12 & 14 for our senior school students. If you are having a sort out over the holidays we would very much appreciate your hand-me-downs. We have plenty of smaller sizes for our junior school students should they need them.

UNDIES

We are always in need of undies – especially for little girls. Any hand-me-downs would be greatly appreciated.

THANKS
Kath Welch

P&C News

DID YOU KNOW

Did you know that the WSS P&C Assn is a combination of the school’s leadership team, teachers, parents and members of the community? There are a nominated few that hold an executive position (5). Nonetheless, these people are dedicated volunteers that commonly have families of their own, possibly work full time, have their own businesses or are stay at home parents. We all want to make a difference in our children’s overall education experience. Apart from contributing in the general running of the School Tuck Shop & Uniform Store, we also try and fundraise through certain events. The monies raised we directly contribute back within the school in many of our Cool School Initiative Projects. We build working relationships between the school communities and also make some friends along the way. If you think the P&C is something you would like to be a member of or hold an executive role, please ensure you get in touch. We would be happy to chat and provide you with some information. If you wish to volunteer with the P&C, it would be gratefully appreciated. You do not have to volunteer all your time, not at all. However every little bit helps, no matter how big or small, extensive or minimal. We thank you for what you are able to contribute. If you would like to contribute, please do not hesitate to contact the WSS P&C in person or via email pandc@worongaryss.eq.edu.au and join our Facebook page.

SCHOOL BANKING

Our last day for school banking for the year 2020 is this Friday 27th November. We will resume school banking in Term 1 of 2021. If you wish for your child to participate in the School Banking initiative, please do not hesitate to contact the WSS P&C and we can send you an information pack.

CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE

The last collection date at Worongary State School for 2020 is this Friday 27th November between 8:30am - 9:00am. Drop off your suitable containers for recycling at the Kiss & Go area at the front of the school. If you require an Orange recycling back for the holidays, please do not hesitate to contact us or alternatively speak to us on Friday morning. If you wish to attend a collection drop off point during the school holidays and wish to contribute the monies to the Worongary State School, please use the ID Code of C10265867. All Monies raised from the Containers for Change collection is directly injected back into the School through our Cool School initiative Projects.

TUCKSHOP NAMING COMPETITION

Thank you to all the Students (and parents) who entered the re-naming competition for our dearest Tuckshop. All suggested name entries were placed in a poll on our Facebook page and submitted to the school teachers for voting. We would like to announce that the most popular chosen name was from Nevaeh BB for “The TuckerBox”. Congratulations!! You have won $10 a week credit to use at the Tuckshop for 5 weeks starting Term 1 2021. Starting next year, you will see a change to our Tuckshop appearance.

COLOUR EXPLOSION RUN4FUN

We recently held our colour run on Thursday 12th November 2020 and what a day it was! No matter how much planning goes into the event, something can always throw a spanner in the works at the eleventh hour which causes it to be changed. Luckily the WSS P&C, Leadership team and WSS Teachers are adaptable and able to support each other during this time. The day was so amazing that many students have dubbed it “the best school day ever”. We couldn’t have done it without everyone’s contributions, and we thank you.

We thank our Volunteers on the day who gave up their day to help set up and colour the children. The QPS & QFRES from our local Nerang areas attended also and we are pretty sure they had just as much fun as the kids.

Thank you to Nerang Stockfeed and our Local Minister Meaghan Scanlon for their donation towards our Hay Stack and pool Noodle Obstacle. The Hay will be reused around our school gardens and the pool Noodles have been kindly donated to Ms Smiths PE classes. Thank you!

We would like to mainly thank the students and school community for your ongoing fundraising support. We raised a total of $24,824.56, which is just amazing. So after we have paid for all the expenses in holding the event, we have a grand total of $15,267.11 to contribute to our Cool School Initiative Project- Playground upgrades. WOOHOO! The event was such a high to end 2020 with- Thankyou.
