From the Principal

Dear parents/caregivers,

Nerang RSL Supporting our Student Leaders

Thank you Tony, from our local Nerang RSL, who offered our 2021 leaders advise when using the flags. Our students raise and lower the flags daily and were very interested in performing this role with utmost respect. Thank you Tony for your lesson and advice to our 2021 school leaders on how to raise, lower and look after our school flags.

2021 Leadership Ceremony

A huge thank you to all our special guests, parents and family members, students and staff for a spectacular leadership ceremony. It was fantastic to see many parents join our students and our local high school principals, to present badges to our new student leaders. Leadership positions included:

  • School Captains, House Captains, Music, LOTE and STEM Captains; Playground Leaders; Student Council Captains and Class Representatives

To our newly elected leaders, congratulations on accepting the challenge of bringing others on that journey with you. Remember, at some stage, others will be looking for you to help them up so they can achieve their dream as well. Your inspiration as a leader is what will continue Worongary State Schools vision for excellence throughout the school. I wish you all every success in 2021!

Parent information Sessions

Thank you to parents for visiting your children’s classes for this year’s annual parent teacher sessions. These events are fantastic to ask questions and gain a greater understanding of what occurs each day in your child’s class. If you have further questions regarding the sessions, please contact your class teacher. Individual parent teacher interviews will be held on Wednesday 24 March 2021. Further information regarding these interviews will be shared shortly.

Leading Learning Collaborative – South East Region

Over the last two days, our school executive team attended the Regional Leading Learning Collaborative (LLC). Worongary State School leadership team has been a part of this journey since 2018 working with Dr Lyn Sharratt in her text Clarity. These days were very positive with the school being able to share the great work and progress in this work. The school celebrated the intentional collaboration, data discussions and next steps of teaching and learning with regional and other school teams. I am very much looking forward to sharing aspects with you throughout the year and how these have been linked to the school improvement agenda within the strategic plan and we all support every student succeeding.

Well Done Girls!!

Congratulations to our Yr 5/6 girls that participated in the Keebra Girls Academy Touch Day on Friday. They came home as the winning Champion School. WSS team 1 crowned champion on the day and WSS team 2 only lost 1 game on the day finishing 3rd.

With the success of the day the girls now have won a session of their choosing (touch, oztag, and league) with the Year 5/6 girls being coached by Keebra Park High School Girls Academy Coaches which our very own Miss Smith is currently a part of. Thank you Mr Jay for assisting with this day.

Regards Adam Brandt, Principal

Are you wishing to volunteer at school?

At Worongary State School, we value community involvement and appreciate the volunteers who come into our school to help in classrooms, run extra-curricular activities, and volunteer in our tuckshop.

If you are looking to volunteer there are a number of ways you can get involved:

  • Class Teacher requests for volunteers
  • Connecting with the P&C
  • Advising the School office

Before volunteering, it is important that our community members know the expectations of conduct and students protection. These elements are compulsory for any person, whether a staff member, contractor or volunteer, to know and understand.

There are two avenues you can take to complete this mandatory training:

  1. Hardcopy: please visit our school office to collect a copy of the Mandatory All -Staff Training Program
  2. Online: you can download the Mandatory All-Staff Training Program-Key Messages Guide through the following address below:

https://qed.qld.gov.au/workingwithus/induction/queenslandstateschools/Documents/key-messages-guide.pdf

Mandatory All-Staff Training program - Key messages guide

Volunteers, contractors and visitors must complete this process annually and be able to present the Record of Completion anytime they are visiting a departmental site.

Instructions:

  • access the Mandatory All -Staff Training Program (either online or a hardcopy)
  • review the information
  • complete the declaration and fill in your details on the Record of Completion section which you will find on the last page of the guide
  • the supervisor, manager or principal of the location you are visiting with verify the completed declaration and finalise the Record of Completion with a signature and date (and school stamp if you are visiting a school)
  • retain the verified Record of Completion section. It will be recognised at schools and departmental sites for 12 months.

Check with the supervisor, manager or principal at the location you are visiting for guidance and the additional information, as per the induction list above, you need to be aware of while working at their department site.

HEALTH ROOM

Over-the-counter medications

The Department recognises that all medications, including over-the-counter (OTC) medications, e.g. paracetamol or alternative medicines, may be drugs or poisons and may cause side effects. As such, schools are required to receive medical authorisation from a prescribing health practitioner (e.g. doctor, dentist, optometrist, but not a pharmacist) to administer any medication to students, including those bought over-the-counter.

Whilst parents may administer OTC medications to their child without medical authorisation, they are aware of the child’s complete medical history, and are able to provide ongoing, direct supervision for the course of the child’s illness. Due to these circumstances, a parent is also more likely to recognise if their child is having adverse effects and requires immediate medical attention.

The student’s prescribing health practitioner also has the knowledge of the child’s medical history to determine the appropriate OTC medication to administer and is therefore able to determine dosage and provide advice regarding potential side effects or interactions with other medications.

For these reasons, OTC medications will only be administered to students at school if medical authorisation has been received.

SECOND-HAND UNIFORMS WANTED

We are in desperate need of second hand polo shirts in sizes 10, 12 & 14 for our senior school students. If you are having a clean out of your child’s wardrobe, we would very much appreciate your hand-me-downs. We have plenty of smaller sizes for our junior school students should they need them.

A big thank you to the Bramble Family for their kind donation of brand new under wear for the health room and also to the person/s who anonymously posted a considerable donations of girls’ and boys’ brand new underwear for our little people who have accidents at school.

Your thoughtfulness is very much appreciated!

A Tribute to Jasmine

It is with great sadness that I inform our school community that the charming and entertaining (plus somewhat ‘crazy’) Jasmine Smith is leaving Worongary State School to pursue other interests. Jasmine began her time in the Tuckshop as a volunteer Mum wanting to get involved and contribute to her children’s school. She has volunteered in the classrooms as well as the Tuckshop while her children attended the school and even had a stint at being the P&C President and Vice President for a time as well. In 2014, Jasmine took on the role of Tuckshop Convenor before accepting her current role of Tuckshop & Uniform Assistant almost two years later.

Jasmine has been an incredibly valuable staff member and school community member and will be sorely missed. In her time here she has achieved so much, including but not limited to:

  • successfully organising and running numerous P&C fundraisers and events while on the P&C executive committee, including: Mother’s Day and Father’s Day stalls, BBQ’s and the Muscle Car Show with the help of her executive team
  • handling the changeover of the original tuckshop online ordering system to Schoolshop Online, resulting in lower fees for both parents and the Tuckshop. Jasmine also pushed the creator of this new system to make adjustments to the system to make it more user friendly for not just our school, but for all schools using it.
  • overseeing and organising the last Tuckshop overhaul, including the purchase and installation of new equipment and Tuckshop windows five years ago.
  • taking the initial steps to streamline the tuckshop menu and make it healthier
  • taking on the task of cooking meals on site for the first time – Spaghetti Bolognese and Fried Rice were the initial dishes introduced.
  • introducing themed meal deal days and birthday platters to the Tuckshop
  • working with myself to change the Tuckshop operations when the playtime and eating times were swapped around a couple of years ago (no small task)
  • engaging and working with numerous volunteers, both in the Tuckshop and while on the Executive committee and making their time here full of laughter and fun
  • going along with all my crazy suggestions to do more/add more/make more/adjust processes etc and helping them come to fruition: eg. Subway Days, fitting in cooking additional items on site when our days were already busy (Butter Chicken, Muffins, Pikelets) and more…
  • and so much more…

I would like to say a massive THANK YOU to Jasmine for her dedication, reliability, incredible work ethic and most of all for her support and friendship. She has contributed so much to this school and will leave a massive void that will be hard to fill. I hope you will all join me in wishing her all the best for her future! Jasmine’s last day in the Tuckshop will be next Wednesday 10 March. Feel free to stop by to say a goodbye or yell a farewell if you’re walking past in the next week.

***IMPORTANT*** Changes to Tuckshop Operations

Please note that from Monday 8 March, Over Counter Sales will only be available at Second Break. A reminder that Over Counter Sales are for students in Years 1-6 only, with a denomination of $5.00 or less. Prep students can continue to pre-order frozen treats for collection at Second Break, as per normal.

Volunteer Welcome

This week, we gratefully welcomed Michelle. E. to our small team of Tuckshop volunteers. I am so thankful to have you jump on board at such an opportune time and look forward to your valuable contribution.

We are still seeking additional volunteers so please feel free to come up for further information.

School Plus

So far, Term 1 2021 has been busy at School Plus Worongary. We have welcomed a number of new Preps and other new students. We have been busy working to get to know the new Preps and ensure they feel safe and happy at the service. We have added all Preps to our School Plus Belonging Tree, created scrap books to track their journey this year as well as creating a Welcome Artwork with the Prep group. School Plus Leaders are assisting by buddying up with Preps to ensure they are welcomed and are creating connections.

School Plus Leader Group has grown in 2021 with new leaders being identified. The Leaders have begun signing contracts and planning projects and a School Plus Manager will come to the service next month to present Leader badges.

Cooking Club has begun with enthusiasm this term with lots of recipes being shared by children families and educators

At School Plus Worongary we continue to focus on hygiene practices reducing any risks around Covid-19. Leaders have been monitoring hand washing practices & have been giving out Hand Washing Certificates each afternoon.

We have had many families donating items to the School Plus Worongary service including dress up clothes, cushions, and boxes. We value the strong partnerships we have with our families
