From the Principal

Dear Worongary State School Community,

Thank you for a brilliant first term for the year. With recent emails regarding changes and postponing of our school events, is not the way I wanted to end a great start to the year. I thank you for your support and understanding over the changes and restrictions that have occurred recently.

My fingers (and toes) are crossed that I do not have to contact you over the holidays with any changes to school operations for Term 2. Today we are checking parent and staff contacts in our SMS service. Over the coming months you might find an increase in updates regards to emerging situations with COVID-19 and the impact at Worongary State School operations. If you have not already, please like our schools Facebook page and monitor DoJo for messages to the parents/carers in our school. Also, please inform the office if your personal contact details have changed so we can keep your accurate information on file and ensure you receive important messages.

Parent Teacher Evening

Thank you for you attendance at the recent Parent Teacher Interviews. This was a fantastic evening with engaging conversations with staff and parents in our school. Thank you to the fantastic team of staff who ensured the smooth running of the event. Also, a huge thank you to the P&C for supplying pizza to our amazing staff on the evening for their dinner. Thank you!!

Staff Updates Term 2

I am very pleased to let you all know that I have extended as Principal for Term 2 and look forward to continuing leading the improvement agenda at Worongary SS. Worongary SS is a beautiful school, with dedicated staff, fantastic students and caring parents who want the best for their children. I am very proud to be given this opportunity again next term.

Miss Melrose has decided to return to a classroom position for Term 2 prior to commencing her maternity leave. The Senior DP position is currently advertised Statewide, on Smart Jobs. Miss Melrose will continue working at Worongary full time as a Local Relief Teacher and assisting with planning days, staff leave, etc. She will also teach also 4D on a Monday alongside Mrs Howden. We thank her for her positivity, humour and professionalism as Deputy Principal over the last term and I wish her every success in this exciting time ahead! We thank Hannah Fenton for her contribution to the Junior years for Term 1 and hope to continue seeing her at our school in the future. Mrs Smith will work with students in Year 1 as the HASS teacher on Friday’s. an additional day - Friday following Hannah Fenton’s current timetable (Prep/Year 1 NCT).

I wish you all the very best for a relaxing and enjoyable Easter holiday doing the things you love with the ones you love.

Are you wishing to volunteer at school?

At Worongary State School, we value community involvement and appreciate the volunteers who come into our school to help in classrooms, run extra-curricular activities, and volunteer in our tuckshop.

If you are looking to volunteer there are a number of ways you can get involved:

  • Class Teacher requests for volunteers
  • Connecting with the P&C
  • Advising the School office

Before volunteering, it is important that our community members know the expectations of conduct and students protection. These elements are compulsory for any person, whether a staff member, contractor or volunteer, to know and understand.

There are two avenues you can take to complete this mandatory training:

  1. Hardcopy: please visit our school office to collect a copy of the Mandatory All -Staff Training Program
  2. Online: you can download the Mandatory All-Staff Training Program-Key Messages Guide through the following address: https://qed.qld.gov.au/workingwithus/induction/queenslandstateschools/Documents/key-messages-guide.pdf

Mandatory All-Staff Training program - Key messages guide

Volunteers, contractors and visitors must complete this process annually and be able to present the Record of Completion anytime they are visiting a departmental site.

Instructions:

  • access the Mandatory All -Staff Training Program (either online or a hardcopy)
  • review the information
  • complete the declaration and fill in your details on the Record of Completion section which you will find on the last page of the guide
  • the supervisor, manager or principal of the location you are visiting will verify the completed declaration and finalise the Record of Completion with a signature and date (and school stamp if you are visiting a school)
  • retain the verified Record of Completion section. It will be recognised at schools and departmental sites for 12 months.

Check with the supervisor, manager or principal at the location you are visiting for guidance and the additional information, as per the induction list above that you need to be aware of while working at their department site.

HEALTH ROOM

Over-the-counter medications

The Department recognises that all medications, including over-the-counter (OTC) medications, e.g. paracetamol or alternative medicines, may be drugs or poisons and may cause side effects. As such, schools are required to receive medical authorisation from a prescribing health practitioner (e.g. doctor, dentist, optometrist, but not a pharmacist) to administer any medication to students, including those bought over-the-counter.

Whilst parents may administer OTC medications to their child without medical authorisation, they are aware of the child’s complete medical history, and are able to provide ongoing, direct supervision for the course of the child’s illness. Due to these circumstances, a parent is also more likely to recognise if their child is having adverse effects and requires immediate medical attention.

The student’s prescribing health practitioner also has the knowledge of the child’s medical history to determine the appropriate OTC medication to administer and is therefore able to determine dosage and provide advice regarding potential side effects or interactions with other medications.

For these reasons, OTC medications will only be administered to students at school if medical authorisation has been received.

Bunnings Easter Art Competition

We are very lucky at Worongary State School that our local Bunnings at Nerang are very supportive of us and often help us out by donating to days like our Outdoor Classroom Day. Recently they asked us to participate in an Easter Art Competition. Classes were able to choose from a piece of MDF, core flute or fence panel. There were no rules except to be as creative as we could be. The staff at Nerang Bunnings will be voting on our artwork as well as other community groups who were invited to participate to see who will be the winning entry.

We’ve all had great fun making our entry to the competition! Here are some examples of our work.

P&C NEWS

AGM- Held 10th March 2021

We sadly said goodbye to a few of our executive team members, Rhiannon Henson (president) has donated many hours of her time to help run many fundraising events for the P&C over the last 3 years. She has been part of the driving force for air-conditioning our school, until the QLD government’s announcement to fund the remaining air conditioning to all QLD State Schools. We thank you for everything you have contributed. Rhi has decided to stand down and concentrate on her family & health. Although she was reluctant to say goodbye and so were we, we wish her the very best in her next endeavours. Kylie Jerome (vice treasurer) & Bec Braithwaite-Bon (secretary) also have decided to stand down from their positions. We also would like to thank them for all their hard work and contributions over the year they were an executive members. Hope all goes well in your adventures also.

Our Vice President, Tracy Bosworth and Treasurer, Rob Paolini have decided to remain as executive members and continue to strive towards making our children’s school experience even better every year. We would also like to welcome our new executive member, Lisa Galway to the Vice Treasurer Role. We look forward to working alongside you at our upcoming events.

Our Secretary position is still vacant. If you wish to be part of a dynamic team and all working to a greater cause of making our children’s schooling experience amazing, then please contact the WSS P&C with your interest. You can see the details in the roles of the secretary position in earlier posts from 11th March 2021 on our Facebook page.

President position is currently in talks... Stay Tuned!

DID YOU KNOW???

That all WSS P&C Executive members are volunteers? We are parents/grandparents/care givers and employed workers just like you! We kindly donate many hours of our time to help run the uniform & tuckshop service and fundraising events. We work alongside the school & also must adhere to certain requirements. We love what we do, and we appreciate both kindness & respect from our school community whilst we do it. Did you know that all the monies we fundraise gets injected directly back into the school to assist with many items that isn’t covered by the Schools or Education Qld’s budgets. It is amazing just how many things they do not assist with. This is one of the reasons why not- for- profit P&Cs exist. Volunteering is amazing! It gives a sense of pride and fulfilment. Although, it can be a lot of hard work at times. We love to bring the fun into schooling and making it better for all the children that attend. If you feel the same, join us…help us. Your children will love to see you being a part of this very important journey.

Share with family and friends to get sponsorships to help raise much needed funds for our Cool School Initiative Projects 2021- PLAYGROUNDS! Yes, that’s right! We are looking at adding some really fun things to our existing playgrounds. We need some serious fundraising to get what we would like. Turns out, playground equipment isn’t cheap! We hope that over the school holidays you can obtain sponsorships by sharing your Safe online profile to friends and family… or even Mum & Dads Work colleagues. The WSS P&C are trying to do a cash less fundraiser as much as possible- to ensure the safety of our volunteers with handling of money. This can be done Online. We would really appreciate your support once again.

Why is the colour run so close to the last? Well yes, it is and the reason we chose to do this is because of the uncertainty of Covid-19 hitting our shores again this winter period. Plus we have been able to secure an amazing deal that just may help us reach our goal - playgrounds! Sooner rather than later. Stay tuned for announcements!

This year, we are bringing something new…. SLIME!! Kids are excited. There is just something about slime that brings out even the inner child even in adults! The slime is safe, nontoxic, water based and biodegradable. It’s going to be our silliest, slimiest and most colorful event yet!

School Plus

School Plus Worongary Newsletter 24/03/2021

It has been a fantastic start to the year at School Plus Worongary!

It’s hard to believe Term 1 is almost over!

We have seen a new Assistant Coordinator appointed, Laura Weiley and a new Educator Daniel Venter. The children are responding well & both new staff members are settling in, and are a great addition to our staff team!

The service program has been popular this term, with children continuing to enjoy the concept of clubs. Cooking, Gardening, Drama, Superhero & Drone Clubs have been popular, and many children are taking up the opportunity to join Homework club.

Every morning designated leaders have been providing daily weather information on the School Plus A-Frame outside. This has provided valuable opportunities to teach children about the weather and importantly the UV Index.

At School Plus we marked Harmony Day & National Day of Action Against Bullying. The children were very responsive and had many fantastic ideas around inclusion and addressing bullying around the school.

Other fun at School Plus this past month

We are getting very close to Vacation Care time! Book now to join in on all the amazing activities we have planned for April!
