From the Principal

A huge shout out to our amazing P&C! What a fortnight with both the Slime Spectacular and the Mother’s Day Store (online and school stall).
The colour and slime spectacular was definitely spectacular! I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the smiles and hearing the laughter throughout the school. It was brilliant to see the families come to the school to either volunteer or to watch their children run and navigate their way through the obstacles. We are fortunate to have a range of media outlets at the school to record the brilliant event. To see our students, staff and parents on the local news, in the newspapers and hear about our event on radio channels and was an added bonus. and a superb way to highlight the efforts of all involved (adults and children). Mother’s Day
I hope that all the mothers, grandmothers and carers of students had a brilliant Mother’s Day. I saw some brilliant events in some of the classes! Thank you to the P&C for your work in the background selling items online and at school at the stall.
Thank you so much to the P&C for organising the different events that have occurred in the week and what you did in the background (for many months) to make these days happen in our school.
Gold Coast Robotics competition
Senior Robotics students participated in the GC Robotics Sumo Competition held at Merrimac State High School. There were 40 teams from 8 local primary schools competing. Worongary State School had 4 teams, and all placed in the top ten on the leader board on the day. The students worked hard and displayed great sportsmanship throughout the day. We made it to the finals and then grand final event and with a 2-all draw eventually placed as 1st Runner Up (Southern). We look forward to continuing our robotics journey and have qualified to participate in the Northern vs Southern Schools GC Robotics Sumo competition.

Under 8’s Day
Next Friday 21 May, Prep to Year 2 students will participate in an Under 8’s Day Celebration as part of Under 8’s Week which in Queensland runs from 17 May through to 21 May.
The theme this year is Children Celebrating Outdoor Play & Learning.

Prep to Year 2 students will be taking their learning outdoors and engage in a variety of activities from fine motor skills development when crepe paper is used to create a braid masterpiece to learning to count in the language of the Yugambah people to masking up and having their face painted. This event will be taking place in our Prep Outdoor area to embrace the 2021 theme and also to ensure this event can go ahead whether it rains or not.
Parents and Guardians can look forward to engaging in conversations about this special celebration with their child on Friday afternoon as well as viewing photos from our event on the Worongary State School Facebook page.
Families wishing to learn more about Under Eights Week can follow a special designated Facebook page ‘ECA Qld – Under Eights Week’ where they can access free webinar programs.
SCHOOL PHOTOS

Our School Photos are scheduled to take place in a couple of weeks on 25 and 26 May 2021.

Orders can be placed online or correct money can be placed in the envelope provided and handed to the photographer on the day. Please note this is not to be sent in prior to the photo day as we are not permitted to hold money on school premises.
The timetable showing the allocated day and time for each class photo will be communciated next week.

Are you wishing to volunteer at school?
At Worongary State School, we value community involvement and appreciate the volunteers who come into our school to help in classrooms, run extra-curricular activities, and volunteer in our tuckshop.
If you are looking to volunteer there are a number of ways you can get involved:
- Class Teacher requests for volunteers
- Connecting with the P&C
- Advising the School office
Before volunteering, it is important that our community members know the expectations of conduct and student’s protection. These elements are compulsory for any person, whether a staff member, contractor or volunteer, to know and understand.
There are two avenues you can take to complete this mandatory training:
- Hardcopy: please visit our school office to collect a copy of the Mandatory All -Staff Training Program
- Online: you can download the Mandatory All-Staff Training Program-Key Messages Guide through the following address:
https://qed.qld.gov.au/workingwithus/induction/queenslandstateschools/Documents/key-messages-guide.pdf
Mandatory All-Staff Training program - Key messages guide
Volunteers, contractors and visitors must complete this process annually and be able to present the Record of Completion anytime they are visiting a departmental site.
Instructions:
- access the Mandatory All -Staff Training Program (either online or a hardcopy)
- review the information
- complete the declaration and fill in your details on the Record of Completion section which you will find on the last page of the guide
- the supervisor, manager or principal of the location you are visiting will verify the completed declaration and finalise the Record of Completion with a signature and date (and school stamp if you are visiting a school)
- retain the verified Record of Completion section. It will be recognized at schools and departmental sites for 12 months.

This Wednesday 19 May at 11am, all our students will have the opportunity to visit the Hall to listen to a special story. Along with almost 1 million other Australian & New Zealand students, we are going to watch an astronaut from the International Space Station read ‘Give Me Some Space’, by Philip Bunting. All students are welcome.
HEALTH ROOM
Over-the-counter medications
The Department recognises that all medications, including over-the-counter (OTC) medications, e.g. paracetamol or alternative medicines, may be drugs or poisons and may cause side effects. As such, schools are required to receive medical authorisation from a prescribing health practitioner (e.g. doctor, dentist, optometrist, but not a pharmacist) to administer any medication to students, including those bought over-the-counter.
Whilst parents may administer OTC medications to their child without medical authorisation, they are aware of the child’s complete medical history, and are able to provide ongoing, direct supervision for the course of the child’s illness. Due to these circumstances, a parent is also more likely to recognise if their child is having adverse effects and requires immediate medical attention.
The student’s prescribing health practitioner also has the knowledge of the child’s medical history to determine the appropriate OTC medication to administer and is therefore able to determine dosage and provide advice regarding potential side effects or interactions with other medications.
For these reasons, OTC medications will only be administered to students at school if medical authorisation has been received.

P&C NEWS
COLOUR & SLIME SPECTACULAR
What an event! Wow-wee. We smashed our fundraising efforts from last year! It is just amazing that our school community can support such a fantastic event and for being such awesome fundraisers. Needless to say, we think the kids agree that they had 'the slime of their life' at the event. You may have seen our school publicised on the local Channel 7 & Channel 9 news that night (6th May 2021), we have uploaded some of the media to the WSS P&C Facebook Page for you all to see. There was also a small skit from Rebel FM & Hot Tomato and we made page 3 of the Gold Coast Bulletin on Friday 7th May 2021. So where are we at with our fundraising? Although we need to finalise the costs involved for our slime spectacular it appears we will get just under the $20,000 mark + the matched promise from the WSS P&C for the 2021 event and we add the $15,000 from last year’s colour explosion we are going to have a near total of $55,000 towards upgrading our playgrounds.
We have a number of playground brochures to go through and we will be liaising with each teacher cohort on any suggestions they may have for the playgrounds. After we get quotes, we are excited to start getting some options together and get the equipment installed later this year.
SCHOOL BANKING
With the recent government changes to school banking it has been decided that School Banking will no longer be applicable to State Schools from July 2021.
However, you can still continue your banking by attending the Commonwealth Bank in person or conducting banking online. School Banking will cease at Worongary State School Friday 28th May 2021. We will ensure all students who are eligible for a banking prize receive them before school banking ceases.
CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE
We are still collecting eligible containers for recycling. Collection dates are every 2 weeks, with the drop off point at the Flag Pole area near the School Admin Building. The remaining collection dates for Term 2 are -
Friday 21st May
Friday 4th June
Friday 18th June
MOTHERS DAY STALL
We were not too sure if we would be able to do an actual physical store considering the very busy weeks leading up to Mother’s Day with the Colour & Slime Spectacular, however, we were able to sneak one in, last minute notice however, it was fantastic to see so many of our school community supporting the Mother’s Day stall. There is just something about kids choosing a little something, something for that special person.
NEW TUCKSHOP MENU
Apologies for the new Tuckshop menu not being out ready for Term 2. The Executive team has reduced from 5 executives down to 3 executives, so planning, organising and all the behind the scenes admin etc has taken precedence. However, it is at its final stages and hopefully will be out very soon.
Effective Monday 17th May 2021. The Tuckshop will be ONLY open for first break every Tuesday. There will be no over the counter sales or second break purchases available. This will allow the Tuckshop Convenor sufficient time to replenish, stocktake and conduct extra cleaning within the tuckshop. This closure will be depicted in the online ordering platform Schoolshop Online.
WSS P&C EXECUTIVE POSITIONS AVAILABLE
Have you always wanted to be a part of a dynamic team that goes above and beyond to ensure students at Worongary State School have a better schooling experience? Do you have new and fresh ideas? We still have some executive positions available please come along to the WSS P&C Meeting Wednesday 9 June 2021 at 4:30pm. The meeting is held at the Admin building in the School Staff room. You can enter this area prior to 5pm through the fenced courtyard between the admin building and tuckshop.
BE A WSS P&C MEMBER
Have you always wanted to be a part of a team environment? Coming up with new and different ideas of how to fundraise towards our Cool School Initiative Projects? Then we want you. The P&C meet on the second Wednesday of every month. We would love to see, meet and work with some new faces.
VOLUNTEERING
Did you know that the WSS P&C executive team are a small handful of parent volunteers? If you wish to volunteer at any events we may have coming up or at our Tuckshop for just a couple of hours each morning, or week, fortnight or month, then we would love to meet you. The tuckshop relies on Volunteers to assist in the day to day operations of Tuckshop, creating a sense of community and kids just love seeing their loved one in tuckshop when they attend. If you can spare some time at any stage please talk to our Tuckshop Convenor Michelle or contact the WSS P&C Executives at pandc@worongaryss.eq.edu.au
UNIFORM STORE
We have a number of second-hand uniforms for sale, prices are variable depending on their condition. If you are in the market for some more uniforms check these out at our uniform store on either Tuesday afternoon between 2:15pm-3:15pm and Thursday 8:00am- 9:30am. Due to the high volume of second-hand uniforms we have in stock at the moment, we are unable to accept any more at this stage.
School Plus

School Plus Worongary has just submitted an entry into the NAPCAN Child Protection Week 2021 Poster competition. The theme was around Neighbourhoods and what children felt was important in their Neighbourhood/ community. We had group time conversations with the children around ‘What they thought would be important if they could design a neighborhood where everyone had what they needed and felt safe’. We asked the children to think about who would live there? What services they might need? What fun things would they like? What would help or be useful to people who lived there?
The children were then given a piece of recycled paper to draw a picture of their neighborhood idea, which we then put together to create our neighborhood. We are very pleased with the caring, inclusive and lovely neighborhood the children created, and the children were very proud of their creation!

School Plus Worongary marked ANZAC Day with group time discussions, reading ANZAC stories, making wreaths & ANZAC biscuits

The Term 2 program is back in full swing with Leader Meetings and clubs recommencing; Homework Club is growing; Boomerang Club is very popular & Science Club has been well received.
Nature week was a highlight with a few Nature based activities including, Nature Walks, Gardening Club and Art & Craft activities using natural resources collected.

We have also started our Term 2 incursion with Dance til you Drop! The children had a great time and we are excited to see what they learn! Bookings are still open for the remainder of the weeks, contact us if you would like to book in!
