Sea of colours

On Wednesday, a sea of team of colours were flowing throughout the school. Queensland, Australian, Nerang teams, a range of sports and yes, Blue teams also. This day was hosted by student council to raise funds for the Kokoda Youth Foundation, a foundation supporting young Australians to do extraordinary things – hiking, outdoor education and youth programs. We are lucky to have 4 amazing teachers walking with 16 students to complete the 17km challenge on the Gold Coast later in July. Well done staff and students for getting involved in this fundraising event!

Heal Country, Heal our Nation

On Thursday 10 June 2021 there was a Didjeribone Performance for Prep-Year 5. The performance included ancient music fused with 21st century digital technology and cultural anecdotes. With numerous opportunities for both individuals on stage and whole audience participation, Didjeribone is a uniquely Australian music experience accompanied by both personal and ancestral stories.

On Tuesday 15th June 2021, Glen Barry will be supporting our Year 6 and Indigenous students to create a series of artworks with the theme Heal Country. This is a great opportunity for our children to learn about respect for country and each other. The workshops will run in the morning session from 9-11am.

Report Cards

Semester 1 report cards will be sent to parents in the last week of the term. If you have changed your email address, please contact the office to update your personal details. The office email address is: office@worongaryss.eq.edu.au

Student safety - Staff Car Park and Delivery Parks

I would like to ask parents to use the crossing to enter the school if entering at the gates near the oval. There are rising concerns over students walking through the staff car park and where deliveries are made near the office. Please use the correct access areas in the school to ensure all students are safe.

Kind Regards,
Adam Brandt
Principal

10 FACTS ABOUT MUSIC EDUCATION

Nearly everyone enjoys music, whether by listening to it, singing, or playing an instrument. Learn why music education is so important, and how it offers benefits to students.

  1. Musical training helps develop language and reasoning: Students who have early musical training will develop the areas of the brain related to language and reasoning. The left side of the brain is better developed with music, and songs can help imprint information on young minds.
  2. A mastery of memorization: Even when performing with sheet music, student musicians are constantly using their memory to perform. The skill of memorization can serve students well in education and beyond.
  3. Students learn to improve their work: Learning music promotes craftsmanship, and students learn to want to create good work instead of mediocre work. This desire can be applied to all subjects of study.
  4. Increased coordination: Students who practice with musical instruments can improve their hand-eye coordination. Just like playing sports, children can develop motor skills when playing music.
  5. A sense of achievement: Learning to play pieces of music on a new instrument can be a challenging, but achievable goal. Students who master even the smallest goal in music will be able to feel proud of their achievement.
  6. Kids stay engaged in school: An enjoyable subject like music can keep kids interested and engaged in school. Student musicians are likely to stay in school to achieve in other subjects.
  7. Success in society: Music is the fabric of our society, and music can shape abilities and character. Students in band or orchestra are less likely to abuse substances over their lifetime. Musical education can greatly contribute to children’s intellectual development as well.
  8. Emotional development: Students of music can be more emotionally developed, with empathy towards other cultures They also tend to have higher self-esteem and are better at coping with anxiety.
  9. Students learn pattern recognition: Children can develop their math and pattern-recognition skills with the help of musical education. Playing music offers repetition in a fun format.
  10. Fine-tuned auditory skills: Musicians can better detect meaningful, information-bearing elements in sounds, like the emotional meaning in a baby’s cry. Students who practice music can have better auditory attention and pick out predictable patterns from surrounding noise.

P&C NEWS

Introducing your 2021 WSS P&C Executive Team.

President- Tracy Bosworth
Secretary- Katie Herviou
Treasurer- Rob Paolini
Vice Treasurer- Lisa Galway

COLOUR & SLIME SPECTACULAR PRIZES

Prizes were received by post on Thursday last week. P&C executives Tracy B, Katie H, Lisa G with the added help of a parent school community member Nicole Mc, organised and collated the prizes per fundraising child and distributed them to the classrooms. Most fundraising students received their prizes Friday afternoon, or due to interschool sports or class schedules, some students may have received theirs on Monday 7 June 2021.

Unfortunately, Australian Fundraising had to substitute some of the prizes due to a supply issue with their distributor. WSS P&C had no control over this and cannot arrange further substitutes. The following were substituted:

  • Top Chic Rainbow with the Nail Designer Device,
  • Fluffin Fashion Unicorn with the Fluffin Fashion Tangle Bangles
  • Squeezy Banana with the Bouncing Putty.

We have some serious MonSTAR fundraisers within our school community and we appreciate your efforts. Everyone has been amazing with their support. Thank you!

SCHOOL BANKING

The Commonwealth School Banking Initiative has ceased for Worongary State School at the end of May 2021. The CBA school banking has been running for over 30 years. Some of you may remember having a Dollarmites Account when you were younger. We thank those students who have been banking regularly with WSS P&C School Banking. We hope you continue your youth saving accounts in the future.

CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE

Our last collection date for Term 2 is Friday 18 May 2021. If you require any orange collection bags over the holidays please do not hesitate to email the WSS P&C at pandc@worongaryss.eq.edu.au with your child’s name and class so we can drop a bag in for them to take home. We only accept eligible containers: Glass and 1-2 Litre milk bottles are not eligible containers for our school. Thank you to all who have supported this Fundraising Initiative.

COOL SCHOOL INITIATIVE PROJECT 2021- PLAYGROUNDs

We have been advised of a future grant coming up towards the end of Term 3 where we can potentially double our money towards our Cool School Initiative Project- Playgrounds. We think this would be a great opportunity to apply for. It would be great to possibly get 'more for our buck', as playground equipment is quite expensive and must comply with Education Qld safety requirements. Stay tuned....

SURVEY

The WSS P&C with the support from Worongary State School have created a short (anonymous) survey that will be sent out to our school community (via email). We hope to get some valued and constructive feedback on all that is P&C within the school. We understand families & teachers are busy, however we would appreciate it if you could find the time over a cuppa to provide some feedback to us. Your feedback will assist us with moving forward in our operations (Tuckshop & Uniform store) and fundraising efforts.

DID YOU KNOW?

The difference between the WSS P&C and the WSS School Council?

A school student council is a formal group of pupils within our school who are elected by their peers to represent them and their views. They also conduct charitable fundraising events within the school. In addition to planning events that contribute to school spirit and community welfare, the student council is the voice of the student body.

"A student council is a group of student leaders who work with an adult advisor to collaborate with others to impact their school community, which impacts their city or town, which impacts our state, which impacts our country, which changes the world. - Definition created by 2008-09 TASC State Officers and District Presidents

Parents and Citizens' (P&C) associations work in productive partnership with their school principal and the community to promote the interests of the school, and facilitate its development and further improvement, to achieve the best possible outcomes for students. The P&C consist of a group of community minded people, parents and citizens, who take on a more formal role and volunteer to assist the school in providing :-

  • feedback and advice on school policies and activities,
  • assistance in providing resources to enhance student outcomes and are involved in a variety of school activities including fundraising,
  • school functions
  • tuckshops and outside school hours care services.

VOLUNTEERING

We all juggle jobs, parenthood, school runs, exercise, trips to the supermarket, kid’s sport, social commitments every day or week. Therefore, maybe you are not in the position to volunteer your time as not all of our volunteers are able to help directly at events or School Operations (Tuckshop/Uniform store). So, if this is you, then don't worry, there are plenty of behind the scene jobs that need doing, including graphic design, arranging printing and collating, arranging sponsors and raffle prizes, working bees or using special skills for an information session/workshop. Some of our volunteers just prefer to donate money, rather than time and resources.

To try and make it easy for our school community, we are asking if you are able to contribute in finding an area within the school where you know you can commit time and / or resources throughout the year. The WSS P&C are hoping to create a calendar of events for 2022, where you may be able to assist with some ideas, resources, construction & manpower, and passion that will bring us all together and contribute in ensuring our children and school are able to have extra school resources to enable a better schooling experience. If this is you or your business, please send us an email at pand@worongaryss.eq.edu.au. We would love to hear from you.

Last week at School Plus we marked National Sorry Day & began Reconciliation Week. These are important dates to share with the children to reflect our respect for & acknowledgement of our first Australians and the important place they hold in our Country’s history. To mark National Sorry Day on May 26th, we read and discussed the book ‘Sorry Day’, we discussed the impact for families and children when children were taken from their families during the assimilation policy. The children made and wore Native hibiscus flowers the of National Sorry Day flower symbol. We also created acrostic poems around saying Sorry.

Reconciliation Week has been marked with traditional games, Boomerang throwing, a poster picture colouring in competition, Black, Red & Yellow friendship bands, book marks as well as making Johnny Cakes in cooking club.

We have been having a fun ‘Guess Who?’ competition at School Plus over the past couple of weeks to see if children could guess the correct staff baby photos. This has not only been a fun activity but has provided insight as to how children’s minds work when trying solve a problem.

Tuck Shop Vouchers have been introduced again this term. As part of our incentive system, some children receive Tuck Shop Vouchers that can be used at the school canteen. These are given out to children that have consistently shown great support to others, helping out when needed or for individual achievements. This is also a great way for School Plus to support aspects of Worongary State School Community.

Friday Fun Day continues to be a popular day with dress ups and ice cream cones!

We have just released our Vacation Care program for the June/July Holidays! We can’t wait to show you all the fun activities we have planned, contact us now to find out more!
