From the Principal

Happy Mother’s Day to our amazing mothers/grandmothers/carers and support people to help make a difference to the lives of our students each and every day. I hope you all had a great weekend and spent time with your families. Thank you to our P&C who held the annual Mother’s Day stall. Again, you offered fantastic items for students to purchase at school. Thank you!!

NAPLAN commences this week

This year our school will be participating in NAPLAN Online for Years 3 and 5 between 10- 21 May. This will mean that students will complete the NAPLAN Writing, Reading, Conventions of Language and Numeracy tests on computers, excluding the Year 3 Writing test which will still be delivered using paper. NAPLAN assessments provide parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. To find out more information about NAPLAN Online, visit the link below.

http://www.nap.edu.au/

NAPLAN is not a test that can be studied for and students are not expected to do so. At Worongary State School, we prepare students by embedding the skills and knowledge required for NAPLAN in our teaching and learning unit plans. I will keep you informed when the results will become available.

Interschool Sport

Interschool sport has been cancelled a few times due to the weather this season. Please keep an eye out on Mr Jay’s posts via ClassDojo for any updates regarding unforeseen changes to the day.

P&C AGM

The AGM has been rescheduled for 31 May. If you are interested in joining our P&C or have questions in what being a member involves, please call me using the office number. I know the P&C have many goals for the year ahead to benefit the students at Worongary State School, and continue to assist our school improvement journey.

Active school travel

We are very excited to launch our school’s involvement as an Active School Travel school. This is the start of our three-year journey to reduce traffic congestion and help build active and healthier citizens. I look forward to continuing to update our journey and progress over the year. Your support is vital for the success of this initiative. If you need to drive to school, there are a range of options for you to safely walk to school.

Wednesday will continue as our weekly active travel day for the rest of the year! Students will receive a bag tag to mark off how many Wednesday’s they walk or wheel to school and go in the running for some great prizes.

Please share any feedback regarding this to office@worongaryss.eq.edu.au for the AST team to review and help improve this initiative.

RACQ Streets Ahead Road Safety Program

The Streets Ahead program includes four age-appropriate presentations covering road safety themes like passenger, pedestrian, and bicycle safety.

The specially designed road map gives students the ability to learn correct road safety behaviours and practice crossing the road safely. For older groups, our education officers will demonstrate the importance of responsible behaviours and safety equipment, like helmets and seatbelts, through engaging lessons.

Regards,
Adam Brandt

MUSIC KITS FOR ALL STUDENTS IN THE LIBRARY

Further music (play along videos) can be accessed at-

FUN FOR RECORDERS PLAYERS – YEAR 3 & 4

The truth is – we all get better with practise! For some students, playing the recorder will be a very achievable goal, for others it will take some extra effort. Make practising the recorder a routine in each day (5 minutes practise is perfect) with some of these online resources.

ACTIVITIES FOR UKULELE – YEARS 5 & 6

Students in Years 5 & 6 are currently learning to play the C Major scale on the keyboard and ukulele. If you are fortunate enough to have a ukulele at home, why not try playing along with some of the popular songs? Start with the ‘very easy’ playlist.

FROM THE STEM ROOM

Our students are having a fantastic time during their weekly STEM lessons, STEM Excellence program and at before school and lunch time clubs in the new Innovation Hub learning space. Students are able to create with LEGO and work collaboratively on SUMO Robots, STEM challenges and on their own interest projects as well. This year we have many students choosing to work on the 2022 Premiers Coding Challenge.

Last week we commenced our first session of esports, a before school extra-curricular club for Year 5 and Year 6 students. Esports, is short for electronic sports, and is different than traditional video gaming. Esports requires teamwork, communication, critical and strategic thinking, creativity, sportsmanship, and leadership. A huge thanks to Mr Jay who is also supporting our esports club as coach and turns out he is quite talented at Mario Kart on the Nintendo Switch, and shared some great tips to improve our students gaming experience.

Team 19931B are getting ready for some very early morning starts to compete in the Live Remote Tournament for VEX Worlds on Monday 9th and Tuesday 10th May from 4:00am (Australian Time). This will be the finale of an amazing 12-month journey starting with a scrimmage and regional event at our feeder high school, Merrimac State High School, to Nationals in Adelaide and now virtually at Worlds. We wish the team all the best as they compete with the best in the World!

FROM THE JAPANESE ROOM

Konnichiwa!

Students have been learning about body parts and colours to create “Aliens” with posters and games based on these topics.

We have incorporated colours and pets to discuss animals and their characteristics. Students can revise these topics and use the 3 kanji of hands 手, (te) eyes 目(me) and mouth 口( kuchi) to show a higher level of writing and reading skills.

We have also been learning about the various places in Japan, major cities, geography and exciting things to do in Japan. Learning a language is much more than just speaking it, the cultural appreciation is important too!

The 5/5 is a very important national holiday in Japan, ‘Kodomo no Hi’ - Boy’s Day.

It is celebrated with kabuto (warrior helmet cakes) koi-carp and the displaying of the folk heroes of Japan. This day wishes that boys are brave, strong in character and healthy. It has been a holiday since 1948 with koi streamers displayed, and the iris flower blooming at this time of year. So, happy Kodomo no Hi to all the boys and men at Worongary SPS!

P&C NEWS

MOTHERS DAY STALL

WSS P&C would like to extend a massive “Thank you” to the community, Parents, Students, Volunteers & Staff of Worongary State School. We had a big two days with our Mother's Day Stall. The students who attended were very well mannered and very thoughtful when selecting their gift for their mum, Nanny/Grandmothers or Special Person. We had a great selection of gifts considering the minimal supply, however we would love to say thank you to the lovely families & teachers that donated some Mother’s Day gifts to the stall. Your contribution was greatly appreciated and added to the variety for our students. The Staff helped coordinate the students' attendance and sometimes assisted in their selection of gifts- You were all amazing and thank you for your support and help. We had a handful of lovely volunteers who helped in our stall over the two days trading. Your help was very welcomed, appreciated and essential- What a very busy time we had! It was lovely to meet you all & we hope to see you again in the future. Thank you all for your support and we hope that the Mothers/grandparents/ carers & special people were very spoilt with love and liked the gift especially chosen for you by your little person. Happy Mother's Day!

WINNER WINNER!

A big congratulations to Elexie H from 6B who was the lucky person to have their name drawn out to win our Mother’s Day Raffle. We hope you will enjoy your Coolcabana the next time you go to the beach or favourite picnic spot. Thank you to everyone who purchased tickets, unfortunately there can only be one winner and Elexie, there are a lot of people very jealous right now as a result of your lucky winnings. Congratulations Elexie H & Family.

CAN COLLECTION

We have had our second can collection for Term 2, The WSS P&C almost forgot about the one on Friday 6th May as we have been preparing for the AGM & Mother’s Day Stall.

Our collection dates for Term 2 are:

Friday 20th May
Friday 3rd June
Friday 17th June

Please bring your eligible containers to the Blue Wheelie recycling bins located at the flagpole area near the school admin building. This term we are fundraising for Robotics Classroom Packages for our new STEM Innovation Hub. We hope you can continue to be part of our change- recycling and fundraising. Remember: If every student in WSS donated 5 eligible containers per collection, we could have:

671 students x 5 items=3355 items
3355 items x 10c = $335.50
$335.50 x 5 collections per term = $1,677.50 per term

4 terms per year = $1677.50 x 4= Total $6,710 towards extra items for our school. Our Scheme ID if you wish to directly contribute at a recycling facility is C10179198 or C10265867

**Note: The WSS P&C would like to advise that we have a few of these specific blue Wheelie bins around the high-density lunch areas of our school. Too late we have found that some students are using these for everyday rubbish & food scraps, instead of what they are actually for. May we please ask the Families of our school community to have a small chat to our students explaining the difference between these bins and the standard green wheelie bins please?

STANDARD EVERYDAY RUBBISH BINS

BREAD BAGS RECYCLING

Worongary SS Families please assist by collecting bread bags you use each and every week from now until September 2022. This initiative is for any soft plastic specifically for containing Bread (loaves/ buns etc) to be collected. Use one empty Bread bag to collect a bunch of other empty bread bags and then drop them off to the WSS Tuckshop where we will do the rest!

It's that easy, you can get the whole family in on it too!

**NB** it is important that the Bread bags are not contaminated by other products, if we can also ensure that they are free from crumbs to reduce any further contamination. They do not need to be washed. Just empty the crumbs outside for the wildlife to munch on and collect the bags for WSS.

Not only are we doing extra recycling for our environment, but we have the chance of getting more sporting equipment for our school and going in the chance to win our very own REPLAS Exercise Circuit that is made completely from recycled soft plastics! Woah!

This Recycling incentive is only for the soft plastics specifically from containing bread, however you can still continue your general soft plastics recycling by either dropping your soft plastics (other than the bread bags) to the specific collection bins at Woolworths or drop them to your nearest REDcycle soft plastics recycling centre to find your nearest location go to:

TUCKSHOP NEWS

1. There are going to be some super excited Students & Staff out there! The WSS Tuckshop has introduced Hommus back to the menu! This healthy dip compliments our 3C's & Crunch pack. Get yours next time you order online through QKR! App.

2. We also have been struggling getting the much loved and wanted Fruit bombs, however it keeps getting better this week- we were able to get four large boxes! Bombs are back baby!

3. We have a new Friday Special- Butter chicken and rice bowl. Freshly cooked in our tuckshop and scrumdillyumptiously delicious!

ORDER THROUGH

**NB** - It is with a timely reminder to the parents of WSS that the Tuckshop no longer takes over the counter orders and are only allowed to conduct minimal cash handling (second break over the counter sales). All tuckshop orders are to be conducted through the QKR! App via 08:30am each day for your order to be available for THAT day. Please could you also ensure you add a Brown paper bag charge (compulsory) to each break order to minimise the costs to our Tuckshop. As you may not be aware that we use a paper bag for each order per child per break. The costs can add up and we appreciate you supporting us in this area.

UNIFORM NEWS

We are open every Thursday from 8am-930am and are located just down from the tuckshop area. We do not carry or accept cash and all orders are either ordered online through the QKR! App or over the counter and paid via Eftpos. The Uniform store is mainly run by volunteers and is only operated once a week including packing of online orders. If you cannot contact us via phone or in person, please email us through uniforms@worongaryss.eq.edu.au and we will try to respond to you in a timely manner (Especially when we have minimal volunteers).

So, what's the process after an online order is made?

Our helpful volunteers on a Thursday will collate the orders, double check the contents through a twostep checking process, the orders will be 'bagged & tagged' and taken to the tuckshop. A coloured slip with your child’s name on it will be placed in the tuckshop boxes advising the teacher that your child has to attend the tuckshop with their slip and collect their order. They then return to the classroom and their teacher advises them to secure it in their bag, or in the classroom to take home that day. Once the uniform has left the Tuckshop, it is no longer our responsibility and becomes that of the child. If you do not wish this process to occur, please ensure that you advise in the notes section when placing the uniform order on QKR! App and attend the Tuckshop during opening hours and collect the order. You will be required to show proof of your order & order number at the time of collection. The tuckshop is open from 8:30am till 2pm. However, service during our peak meal times is a priority and you may be asked to briefly wait whilst this is completed. Reminder- If you have ordered online, they are only collated on a Thursday morning every week and available for collection after 930am on that Thursday after your order.

SENIOR SHIRTS

We were very excited to get a sneak peak of the senior shirts in production through an sms. They are looking amazing and we can't wait till they are finished and delivered. Once they have been delivered the WSS P&C will attend the classrooms and hand out the orders to the allocated child. There are still a few weeks until they arrive.

AGM NEWS

Unfortunately, due to low 2021 member attendance to the AGM held on Wednesday 4th May 2022, we did not make the required quorum for it to be heard. As a result, we are required to postpone the AGM and select a new date of Tuesday 31st May 2022 at 4:30pm, location to be advised. Please ensure you go to our WSS P&C Facebook page to keep up to date. The WSS P&C requires as many of the 2021 P&C members to attend the AGM for it to proceed. All Apologies must be submitted in writing to the secretary of the WSS P&C prior to the meeting commencing.

We would also like to advise that ALL Memberships & executive roles lapse and are open for nomination or possible re-election. If you wish to get involved and be an integral part of your child’s school, please register your interest, request for further information, advice of your attendance and/or nomination, marked attention to the secretary Katie via email pandc@worongaryss.eq.edu.au

A Parents and Citizens’ Association (P&C) is a group of community minded people, parents and citizens, who take on a more formal role to assist the school in providing:

  • Feedback on school policies and activities
  • Additional resources to be used to enhance student learning
  • Parents with opportunities to be involved in their child’s education.
  • To foster community interest in educational matters.
  • To encourage closer cooperation between the parents of students attending the school, other members of the community, staff and students of the school.
  • To provide advice and recommendations to the principal of the school on issues and concerns in respect of students and the general operation and management of the school.
  • To provide or assist in the provision of financial or other resources or services for the benefit of students of the school.

Would you like to become a member? Or even hold/share an executive position? (certain positions) It is important that school communities know the importance and continued contribution that P&C Associations make to our school and the Schooling experience for our students.

The WSS P&C has been the driving force and worked collaboratively with the community and Worongary State School since 1993. We host many fundraising initiatives, where all fundraising efforts are used within our school to improve resources & facilities: like Playgrounds, Air conditioning (prior to QLD government's announcement to fund it), many Educational Information sessions, Sports equipment, school rewards programs, Ipads, Multipurpose courts, Computer Equipment, Year 6 Leaving ceremony, Library Books... and this is to name a few. We like to put the fun in fund-raising! We host trivia nights, Colour Runs, discos, Father & Mother’s Day Stalls/Raffles, Sausage sizzles and chocolate drives or the like. We love to be part of our community and do what we can, when we can.

We also run the two main operations at the School- Tuckshop & Uniform store, where the minimal monies earned is injected back into those key operations and any additional adds up and helps be contributed to our resources and facility upgrades. Without our Schools P&C, the above events, operations and fundraising efforts cease.

It would be unfortunate if the WSS P&C Assn becomes dissolved as a result of minimal volunteers/Executives positions filled who can actively participate and continue the passion, the drive, the collaboration, the fun, the everything for our school, our students. (Aka Our Children & their school experiences).

We would love to have some new people to help drive this passion, bring new ideas to the table and be actively involved. If you are that person that can be part of our WSS P&C Team, we would love to have you on board.
