From the Principal

This week we were reminded that winter is upon us with very cold temperatures. Welcome winter!!
Report Cards
At the end of this term you will receive your child’s Semester One Report Card for their academic achievement across all Key Learning Areas (KLA). Please keep a look out for report cards to be emailed out in the last week of school to the email account you have shared with the school. For some email addresses, emails from the school can be placed in your junk folder. Once these are sent, we will update you via Class DoJo.
We encourage you to connect directly with your child’s teacher(s) should you require any clarity regarding the Semester One Report Cards.
Book Fair 2022
Thank you to our Librarian Mrs Connor for organizing the 2022 Book Fair at Worongary State School. It has been lovely seeing students excited over books, books and more books. Classes had a viewing session last week and were offered before and after school to purchase the books.
Sales start Monday 6 June until Friday 10 June, each morning from 8:15am to 9:00am, then again, each afternoon from 3:00pm to 3:45pm.
Thank you, Mrs Connor, for organising and to our families for supporting this initiative.
Enrol now for 2023
I had my first Principal Tour for 2023 enrolments during the week, welcoming new families to our school. I thoroughly enjoyed walking new and existing families in and around our school.
If you have younger children, family or friends who intend on enrolling at our beautiful school in 2023, please ask them to contact the office to commence the enrolment process for 2023. To find out further information on our Get Set for Prep 2023 program, visit our website for upcoming dates.
Interschool Sport
It was great to have interschool sport finally go ahead after Gold Coast being inundated with rain fall. Thank you for your understanding with the last-minute cancellations and changes. Please know these are out of our control. Thanks Mr Jay and our students for staying positive and your efforts returning to your sports to finish the term strong!
State of Origin Free Dress Day
Well done to our school council for adding some friendly rivalry with staff and students wearing their team colours. All money raised by student council will go towards more sporting equipment for students to use during their lunch break. Great initiative student councillors!!

Worongary families are invited to the End of Semester Concert, Monday June 13, 3:30 – 4:30pm in the School Hall. This is a wonderful opportunity to hear our choirs and learn more about learning a musical instrument at Worongary.
The event is free but we encourage all families to bring some gold coins and buy raffle tickets to support our Year 6 Kokoda teams fundraiser for the School Challenge in which they are participating in early July.

WORONGARY & THE GOLD COAST YOUTH CHOIR
A number of our students have received scholarships from the Gold Coast Youth Choir. This choir is directed by ‘Ten Tenors’ Anthony Phipps and rehearses each week at the Gold Coast Youth Orchestra Centre. The students learn a vast array of repertoire and recently performed at The Miami Great Hall.
Congratulations to the students pictured below.

WHY MUSIC?
Why do we teach students music? What is the point? Wouldn’t they be ‘better off’ spending their time doing English and Maths? Why do kids ‘still’ learn recorder? When will they ever use these skills in life!
These are some of the questions and beliefs I hear often. The truth is Music education taps into so many parts of the brain that English or Maths only, do not. Music connects the mind to the physical body to the emotional body. If you are interested in reading more about the benefits of music education please look at Harvard medical School’s research -

3, 2, 1 …. GO! On Thursday 26th May, two teams of four students including myself (and two reserves) competed for the first time ever in The FUSE Cup at Emmanuel College. The FUSE Cup is a national competition where teams compete against each other using a Nintendo Switch. Our game on the day was Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
After much morning training during our esports club with Mrs P and Mr Jay, we headed off excited to take on the other schools. Thank you also to our parents for supporting our program and helping us on the day with transport.
With everyone gaming to the best of their ability, we had three students, Jesse, Jakob and Ryan who made it through their heats, making it to the next stage the knockout stage… ding, ding. Overall students had a great day and were acknowledged for their teamwork and sportsmanship.

Our STEM Excellence students and some Year 5 STEM students went to Merrimac State High School on Monday 30th May to attend the Gold Coast Robotics Robot SUMO Competition. With 12 local primary schools attending, our eight teams dominated on the day, winning most of their matches and even having to sadly knock out some of our own teams. After over 150+ matches, we were crowned Overall Champions and the 2022 Gold Coast Robotics Southern School Champions.

School community consultation – Worongary State School
Let us know:
Where do you like to
Park & Stride?
We are seeking your feedback on determining Park & Stride locations around our school.
Submit your feedback to win 1 of 5 X $50 gift cards!
Background
Worongary State School is conducting consultation with support from the City of Gold Coast as part of the Active School Travel (AST) program at Worongary State School.
The AST program was recently launched on Wednesday 11 May 2022.
What is active travel?
Active travel includes modes other than driving a car – such as walking, riding a bike or scooter, or catching public transport.
There are many benefits to actively travelling to and from school, including reducing traffic congestion during pick up and drop off times, supporting healthier students and families, learning life-long road safety skills, helping the environment, and helping kids have fun.
Determining locations where families can Park & Stride is one way that we can support our school community to travel actively to and from school and this is what we are seeking feedback on
What is a Park & Stride?
A Park & Stride is a safe and easy-to-use location where parents and carers can easily and safely stop their car to drop, pick up and actively travel with their children to and or from school.
An ideal Park & Stride location should have most of the following characteristics:
- It is easily accessible to and from school by foot, such as within a 5-10 minute walking distance from school.
- It has a clear pathway for pedestrians and those riding (bike, scooter etc) to travel safely, as well as safe cross points (such as pedestrian crossings, pedestrian refuges in the middle of roads or crossings with supervisors wherever roads must be crossed).
- It has a large enough area for vehicles to park without obstructing the flow of traffic.
- It does not pose major issues for local residents.
- It has enough space for a vehicle to make a complete turn (such as a very wide cul-de-sac), if required.
Why we need your help?
As the majority of our students’ families are based within the catchment area, we feel that you would likely know best ‘what works and what doesn’t’.
As you will be aware the environment surrounding our beautiful school comes with some challenges including steep inclines, local construction projects and limited space for vehicles in some areas.
With this in mind, we would love to hear from you about suggested Park & Stride locations that provide for safe and easy to use active travel routes for our children.
How you can participate
Throughout this term, we invite families and carers to consider potential Park & Stride locations as you drop off and pick up their children. Those who can, could trial parking and actively travelling with their children to ensure the route meets the above criteria.
Tell us: Is there a location that already works for you as a Park & Stride location, and meets the above criteria?
Submit your feedback via the following survey link: www.research.net/r/2F7CQNQ
by Friday 17 June 2022 (Term 2, Week 9) to go into the draw to win 1 of 5 X $50 gift cards!
