From the Principal

What a semester at Worongary State School!

It was a challenging start to the year with delays to the school start, flooding closures creating changes to the normality of schooling as we know it. These changes were sudden and we all had to change our plans suddenly. Thank you for your support during these changes and understanding that these were out of our control.

This week we were able to share and congratulate students on their academic efforts and performance over the semester. Congratulations to all students who try their best every single day to improve their learning and skills at school. Families – you should be very proud.

Thank you for the support as we engage in the Active School Travel program and supporting the community by reducing the congestion around our school. Students and parents are scootering, riding, walking and carpooling their way to school. Local parks also have seen an increase of cars with students and families are parking a little away and walking to school. Thank you! Next term we will have another breakfast event to celebrate travelling to school actively.

This semester, our focus has been on deepening the staff understanding of the Australian English Curriculum with a focus on writing improvement. Every week, every teacher from every year level, has been taken off class to meet in professional learning teams. They collaborate and discuss the best next steps in student outcomes. This work is based on the text “Learning by Doing” and the work of DuFour in professional learning communicates. The calibre of conversations and professionalism of our teachers is outstanding. This work will continue into next semester as we continue to focus on writing and a collaborative culture in our school community.

Please have a safe holiday and I look forward to welcoming staff and students back rested, refreshed and ready to learn for semester two.

FUNDRAISING

CAN COLLECTION

Term 3 collection dates

  • 15th July
  • 29th July
  • 12th August
  • 26th August
  • 9th September

In TERM 3 our fundraising efforts are going towards buying more home readers for our School. Please help us reach this initiative and please bring your eligible containers to the Blue Wheelie recycling bins located at the flagpole area near the school admin building.

FYI

TERM 1- Monies raised towards our Stem library was an amazing $330.00! Thankyou!

TERM 2 – monies raised for Robotics Classroom Packages for our new STEM Innovation Hub. With the contribution from the RAW Challenge, we raised a whopping $470.00 towards buying Robotics for our school. Well done and thank you!

We will post photos of the items once purchased to our WSS P&C Facebook page soon.

Remember; If every student in WSS donated 5 eligible containers per collection, we could have;

671 students x 5 items=3355 items

3355 items x 10c = $335.50

$335.50 x 5 collections per term = $1,677.50 per term

4 terms per year = $1677.50 x 4= Total $6,710 towards extra items for our school.

Our Scheme ID if you wish to directly contribute at a recycling facility is C10179198

or C10265867

BATTLE OF THE SCHOOLS - CAN COLLECTION

We have registered our school for the Battle of the Schools Express Recycling Initiative. We already recycle, Let’s take it up a notch or ten from 11th July to 16th September 2022. Get your extended family, friends, and work mates/ establishment to assist our school.

We love recycling, we would love to have a chance at winning an additional $500.00 towards our schools 'Cool School Initiative Projects'. If you need a recycling Bag, they are available in the yellow wheelie bin in the courtyard of the Administration building.

There you will also find our Big Blue Wheelie Recycling Specific Bins. You can drop off your eligible containers any time during school hours or you can alternatively attend the Local Express Recycling Depot located at 5 Indy Court Carrara and donate your containers to our Scheme ID C10265867.

STEM ELECTION BBQ

We recently held a Stem Election BBQ fundraiser, to help showcase our Stem Robotics and fundraise for more eRobotics Kits for our school Classrooms. We would like to proudly advise, that it was very successful. Thank you to all who were involved behind the scenes and who assisted on the day. We are very excited to advise that we raised a grand total of $1,130 towards our Robotic Kits!

JELLY BEAN GUESSING COMPETITION.

We had many guesses of how many jellybeans were in our big glass jar at the election BBQ. We would like to announce that the (first) closest guesser was the SPAIC family. Congratulations you have won yourself a very large glass of Jellybeans to enjoy over the school holidays! Guess was 1425 and there were 1418 jellybeans in the glass jar!

BREAD BAGS RECYCLING

Worongary SS Families assist by collecting Bread bags you use each week from now until September 2022. This initiative is for any soft plastic specifically for containing Bread, from loaves/ buns etc can be collected. Use one empty Bread bag to collect a bunch of other empty bread bags and then drop them off to the WSS

Tuckshop where we will do the rest!

It’s that easy, you can get the whole family in on it too!

**NB** it is important that the Bread bags are not contaminated by other products, if we can also ensure that they are free from crumbs to reduce any further contamination. They do not need to be washed. Just empty the crumbs outside for the wildlife to munch on and collect the bags for WSS.

Not only are we doing extra recycling for our environment, but we have the chance of getting more sporting equipment for our school and going in the chance to win us our very own REPLAS Exercise Circuit that is made completely from recycled soft plastics! Woah!

This Recycling incentive is only for the soft plastics specifically from containing bread, however, you can continue your general soft plastics recycling by either dropping your soft plastics (other than the bread bags) to the specific collection bins at Woolworths or drop them to your nearest REDcycle soft plastics recycling centre.

We have had an awesome response to this, thank you to the families who have contributed so far. Keep them coming
