From the Principal

Welcome back for a normal start to Term 3.

We are very much looking forward to having a term of engagement with the community with many whole school events. Since arriving as Principal during Home Learning and limited access to the school, we are now in full swing to bring back the traditional events that have occurred in our school and importantly – open our school up to families.

Celebrating Science Week 2022 @ Worongary State School

National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology. The school theme for National Science Week in 2022 is Glass: More than meets the eye. It is based on the UN International Year of Glass. It will celebrate the many roles that glass plays in our lives – from phone screens to optical fibre to glassware in labs – plus investigating glass as a part of our sustainable future. Our STEM Captain and STEM Excellence students will be hosting a range of STEM activities for students to be able to explore and participate in during break times each day during Science Week.

Also, Worongary State School were successful in obtaining a National Grant for Science Week. As part of our Science Week activities, we will be hosting an iDig Discovery school community event to celebrate the work that some of our Year 4 students have been doing as part of their scientific inquiry Project Dig focused on Australian Megafauna in partnership with the Queensland Museum Network.

Book Week and Grandparents Day – 24 August 2022

This year’s theme is Dreaming with eyes open… and will be held during 20-26 August 2022. Our traditional Book Week Dress up day and Grandparents Day will be 24 August 2022. This is such a fun day for students being able to dress up in character from their favourite book.

We are so happy to be able to see the return of our Art Gallery in the hall for Grandparents and families to attend. Keep a look out on ClassDojo for further information on this.

Congratulations Kokoda Teams!

I would like to extend a huge congratulations to our staff and students who completed the Kokoda Challenge over the weekend. To complete the 18km in 4 hours with such a large group and importantly together, is phenomenal. To the teachers who trained and spent their weekends with the students – thank you! Thank you to the parents who supported their children complete this challenge. To the students…well done! It is called the Kokoda Challenge for a reason – it is a challenge. The terrain is very challenging. The distance is challenging. The conditions – often cold and wet – is challenging. Well done to you for rising up to the challenge. YOU should be very proud.

School Opinion Survey

The annual suite of School Opinion Surveys will be conducted in Term 3 and will close on 12 August 2022. All families, school staff and students in target year levels (5, 6, 8 and 11) will be invited to participate. We encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say about what our school does well, and how we can improve.

An invitation to complete the Parent/Caregiver Survey will be emailed to one parent/caregiver per family in the week beginning 11 July. The invitation will be sent from the Department of Education, not the school, and it will have the subject line School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2022. Check your junk email folders if you can’t find it. The survey can be completed as soon as the invitation is received and will take approximately 5 minutes using a computer, tablet or smart phone.

Parents/caregivers who do not have access to the internet at home are welcome to complete their survey online at the school. School computers/tablets will be available.

FROM THE MUSIC ROOM

Why We Sing!

Welcome to all returning and new Worongary families! By the time you read this every child at Worongary will have been to the Music Room for their first lesson in Term 3.

Sometimes children are reluctant to sing. This is a multi-faceted issue. Research suggests that students may avoid singing as they are scared of failing.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “The speed of the leader determines the pace of the pack.” We are all responsible for guiding our children. If we as adults aren’t singing, how can we expect our children to sing?

So next time you hear a favourite tune, sing along! Not only will your mental health improve, you will also inspire and encourage your children to engage with music!

LIVE MUSIC CONCERT FOR YEAR 3 & 4

Year 3 and Year 4 students are invited to a live Music Performance in our School Hall on Monday August 22. KABOOM PERCUSSION show is coming to Worongary to show our students how to be creative merging Science and Music together, to create a multitude of sounds.

Please check your emails for invoice and permission form.

OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT IN 2023

There are so many excellent reasons why every child should learn a musical instrument! This opportunity is available in 2023 via the Instrumental Music Program for students currently in Year 2, Year 3 and above

This term, each child in Years 2 and 3 will receive an ‘Expression of Interest’ form, with the view to learning a musical instrument at school in 2023.

Learning a musical instrument is proven to increase cognition, improve mathematics and language skills, improve auditory discrimination, co-ordination and a sense of wellbeing. It does require commitment (one year minimum) and considerable effort but is very rewarding. Please carefully consider this amazing opportunity with your child. Information and the ‘eleven reasons’ will be sent home shortly.

Please do not hesitate to connect with the Music Department if you have any questions.

**FUNDRAISING NEWS**

BATTLE OF THE SCHOOLS- Can Collection- Express Recycling Initiative @ Worongary SS

Well, it has begun! Battle of the schools has kicked off and we are 1 of 9 schools within our district that are participating in this recycling initiative. Although we of the WSS Community have been recycling for years now, we need your help to knock it up a notch between the dates of 11 July and 16 September 2022.

If every student, parent and staff member at Worongary could manage to donate at least 5 -10 (eligible) containers for our collection day per fortnight, we may be in the chance to win an extra $500.00 towards our school Term 3 Fundraising- New School Readers. We are sure that the junior school would love to see some new and interesting home readers coming home for homework/ In class reading.

Our term 3 Collection dates are;

  • 29 July
  • 12 August
  • 26 August
  • 9 September

However, you do not have to wait to bring your eligible containers in on those dates if it isn’t suitable. Our large 240L Blue Recycling bins (depicted Below) are located in the Courtyard area of the Schools Admin building, and you can simply place them in there at school pick up or drop off any day. Or alternatively you can attend any recycling Depot and donate your containers to our scheme ID C10179198. It is so easy! And we would be grateful for your contribution.

We also have been lucky enough to obtain some smaller 120L green recycling bins (depicted below) that will be distributed around our eating areas of the school for kids to easily differentiate between normal waste and Eligible Container recycling waste.

If you would like a Containers collection Bag (depicted below) delivered to your child’s classroom, Please do not hesitate to email us at pandc@worongaryss.eq.edu.au and we will deliver it on either a Thursday or Friday for them to bring home and start their WSS Eligible container collection now.

BREAD BAG RECYCLING - Wonder Recycling Rewards Initiative

Thank you to all the families who have started to bring in their collection of bread bags for this recycling initiative. How great is it? We recycle these soft bread bag plastics and gain points that we can redeem for sporting goods for our school and we go in the chance to win an exercise circuit made from the recycled plastic we collect! Collection has officially started from now until 9 September 2022. Please see the below depicted tips on how to start collecting and then drop them off to either the tuckshop during opening hours or to the uniform store Thursday mornings between 8am-9:30am. Another great recycling initiative, that we not only help our environment, but we also gain some awesome goods for our school. Any bag used specifically/directly to contain bread.

Let’s get Bread bag collecting Now!

GRANTS

It is with saddened news that we weren’t successful in the $100k super funding round of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund Grant for our Playground. We were advised that our application was: {Quote} “Application meritorious but fund is oversubscribed, and application was not able to be funded”. However, it does mean that we can keep trying for the standard rounds of $35k throughout the year. Playground Equipment is very expensive, what seems like forever in fundraising efforts by our WSS P&C and School Community, it is all adding up to our goal to improve on our current playground facilities. The WSS P&C Executives are submitting applications to suitable grants to help us towards our fundraising goals. If you have had grant writing experience, please feel free to contact the executive team and see what we can accomplish together.

**UNIFORM STORE**

  • We have received more orders of Zip up cardigans & trackpants available for purchase.
  • We are still waiting for our smaller sized music shirts to be delivered.
  • Has your child lost their wide brim hat? We have plenty available for purchase.
  • Senior shirts 2023 pre-ordering will start by end of term 3 2022.

NEXT WSS P&C Meeting

If you have a passion for volunteering, fundraising, building on working relationships with the school and our community, and making the overall schooling experience for all our children a success, please come along and join the P&C Assn. We still have executive and member positions for 2022 available.
