School Survey reminder
Thank you to all of those who have already completed the Parent/Caregiver Survey. If you have not had a chance to complete the survey yet, please note that the online surveys will remain open until Friday, 12 August 2022. This is your opportunity to provide feedback about what our school does well and how we can improve.
To have your say, check your email for an invitation from the Department of Education titled School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2022.
Can’t find your invitation? If your family has more than one parent/caregiver, check that they haven’t received the invitation and/or check your junk email folder.

Please check your children’s belongings for their name or other students’ names. There has been many lost hats and jumpers in the school and we really want to return them to the owners. If you have any items that are named and not your child’s, please return them to your class teacher.

Celebrating Science Week 2022 @ Worongary State School
National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology. The school theme for National Science Week in 2022 is Glass: More than meets the eye. It is based on the UN International Year of Glass. It will celebrate the many roles that glass plays in our lives – from phone screens to optical fibre to glassware in labs – plus investigating glass as a part of our sustainable future. Our STEM Captain and STEM Excellence students will be hosting a range of STEM activities for students to be able to explore and participate in during break times each day during Science Week.
Also, Worongary State School were successful in obtaining a National Grant for Science Week. As part of our Science Week activities, we will be hosting an iDig Discovery school community event to celebrate the work that some of our Year 4 students have been doing as part of their scientific inquiry Project Dig focused on Australian Megafauna in partnership with the Queensland Museum Network.

PREP 2023

One of the aspects of Worongary State School that we are praised for within the wider community are the values and positive behaviours that we develop in our students. This includes instilling a sense of pride in our school. One simple example of this is the correct wearing of our school uniform. We would like to take this opportunity to once again thank our school community for your commitment to the school uniform policy that maintains our students’ positive sense of belonging. We would like to remind everyone that our uniform option for the cooler months is the wearing of the Worongary State School jacket or pullover (alternative is a plain maroon pullover). School Uniform items are available for purchase from the school uniform shop on a Thursday 8am – 9:30am or through the QKR app.

FROM THE MUSIC ROOM

YEAR 2 & 3 STUDENTS – MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS IN 2023
There are so many excellent reasons why every child should learn a musical instrument! The opportunity is now here for students in Year 2, Year 3 and above. We are specifically looking to recruit students in the following year levels:
Stringed Instruments –
STUDENTS going into YEAR 3, 2023
Band Instruments – STUDENTS going into YEAR 4, 2023
Each child, in Years 2 and 3 will receive an ‘Expression of Interest’ form with the view to learning a musical instrument in 2023. Current students in the program performed for students this week and introduced the various orchestral instruments taught by Specialist Music Teachers here at Worongary.
Learning a musical instrument is proven to increase cognition, improve mathematics and language skills, improve auditory discrimination, co-ordination and a sense of wellbeing. It does require commitment (one year minimum) and considerable effort (daily practice) but is very rewarding. Please carefully consider this amazing opportunity with your child.
Students in the programs have a weekly lesson (in school time) with a Specialist teacher. They also participate in an ensemble which rehearses one morning or one afternoon each week (out of school time). Students are involved in community performances throughout the year and make many new friends.
Further details are detailed in the ‘Expression of Interest’ form available from the Music Room or by contacting Miss Jones kjone416@eq.edu.au

LIVE MUSIC CONCERT FOR YEAR 3 & 4
Year 3 and Year 4 students are invited to a live Music Performance in our School Hall on Monday August 22. KABOOM PERCUSSION show is coming to Worongary to show our students how to be creative merging Science and Music together to create a multitude of sounds.
Please check your emails for invoice and permission forms. Paper copies are also available from the Office.

WHY WE PRACTICE!
Many of us are passively involved with music, which means that we bob our head to chart hits sung by our favourite artists and band, but all too often, it ends there. Creating music, playing a musical instrument, practising a musical instrument is a different experience that not so many of us are acquainted with. Numerous studies have proven that playing an instrument is so beneficial to the brain. Read on to learn more:
- Playing a musical instrument is a great stress buster!
- Playing a musical instrument builds patience and resilience.
- Playing a musical instrument helps children to focus.
- Playing a musical instrument improves memory and motor skills.
- Playing a musical instrument helps improve listening skills (don’t we all want our children to be better listeners!!)
- Playing a musical instrument improves childrens’ learning by one year of academic growth (Dr Anita Collins Bigger Better Brains meta-analysis)

On Wednesday 27th July, our esports team of six students went to Emmanuel College for Term 3’s The FUSE Cup competition. Students selected from Years 5 and Years 6 have been training intensively developing their Rocket League skills. It was a tough competition against six other private and state schools. We had two teams make it through to the quarter finals and one team continue to semi-finals and then to the grand final. We placed second overall in the competition, what a fantastic achievement. We are very proud of the entire team, Noah E, Lennox, Noah S, Jakob, Hayden, and Jesse for displaying great teamwork, encouragement, and support of each other all day. A huge thank you also to Mr Jay for supporting the team on the day.

Thank you to our parents and students who attended last Thursday’s after school launch of the 2022-2023 VEX IQ Season Slapshot. It was great to be able to share information about our VEX Robotics program as well as share the new game, team roles and to officially start our season. We will be having three teams, including an all-girls team. It is so great to have our families involved as we continue to grow our robotics program here at Worongary State School.

ACTIVE SAFE TRAVEL

Nearly 100 students at Worongary State School entered the AST (Active Safe Travel) drawing competition and even though the winners have not been decided by the GCCC as yet, we thought it might be nice to showcase some of the entries in the newsletter each week. Here are the ones for this week.

FROM THE P&C
**FUNDRAISING NEWS**
BATTLE OF THE SCHOOLS- Can Collection- Express Recycling Initiative @
Worongary SS
Battle of the Shools has kicked off and we are 1 of 9 schools within our district that are participating in this recycling initiative. Although the WSS Community have been recycling for years now, we need your help to knock it up a notch between the dates of 11th July and 16th September 2022.
If every student, parent and staff at Worongary could manage to donate at least 5 -10 (eligible) containers for our collection day per fortnight we may be in the chance to win an extra $500.00 towards our Term 3 Fundraising- new school readers. We are sure that the junior school would love to see some new and interesting home readers coming home for homework/ in-class reading.
The remaining term 3 collection dates are;

- 12 August
- 26 August
- 9 September
You do not have to wait to bring your eligible containers in on these dates if it isn’t suitable. Our large 240L blue recycling bins (depicted below) are located in the courtyard area of the school’s Admin building and you can simply place them in there at school pick up or drop off. Alternatively, you can attend any recycling depot and donate your containers to our scheme ID C10179198. It is so easy! We would be grateful to receive contributions.
If you would like a container collection bag (depicted below) delivered to your child’s classroom, please do not hesitate to email us at pandc@worongaryss.eq.edu.au and we will deliver it on either a Thursday or Friday for them to bring home and start their WSS eligible container collection now.

BREAD BAG RECYCLING - Wonder Recycling Rewards Initiative
Thank you to all the families who have started to bring in their collection of bread bags for this recycling initiative. How great is it? We recycle these soft bread bag plastics and gain points that we can redeem for sporting goods for our school. We also have the chance to win an exercise circuit made from the recycled plastic we collect! Collection has officially started from now until the 9 September 2022. Please see below depicted tips on how to start collecting and then drop them off to either the tuckshop during opening hours or to the uniform store Thursday Mornings between 8am-9:30am. This is another great recycling initiative that not only helps our environment, but also gains awesome goods for our school. Any bag that is used specifically/directly to contain bread is eligible.
Let’s get bread bag collecting now!

UNIFORM STORE
We are open every Thursday from 8am to 9:30am for your over-the-counter purchases, may we please remind the community that the Uniform store is not in the position to accept cash and no cash is kept on premises. We offer Eftpos facilities for your convenience. Otherwise, you can order through the QKR! App where the orders will be processed on a Thursday and held at the WSS Tuckshop. Your child will be notified via a slip in the tuckshop box to their classroom to arrange with the teacher to collect their items from the tuckshop.
Please note, once the items have been collected from the tuckshop by the student or family member, the WSS P&C carries no further responsibility for to the security of the uniforms. We recommend for parents to attend the tuckshop after Thursday morning to collect if you have children that you feel may not be up to the challenge of that responsibility to ensure the security of the uniforms ordered. Thank you
TUCKSHOP NEWS
We would like to advise that the tuckshop has succumbed to supply issues of late, much like many other businesses. Unfortunately, this is out of our control, and we may experience from time-to-time delays or shortages on certain items for our online menu. Furthermore, as we are all aware, there has been an increase in fresh produce supplies and therefore some items on our menus will change in costings as a result. We will endeavour to try and keep the additional costs to a minimum.
Lately we have had several students attend the tuckshop asking for spoons or forks for their home-made lunches. May we please ask if parents can ensure that their children have suitable utensils in their lunchboxes for this. Although the tuckshop does have these available, they will be at a cost of 10c each to supply from now on. If ordering specific items from the tuckshop that require utensils- these have already been calculated in the costs of that item. We appreciate your understanding regarding this.
WSS P&C MEETING OUTCOME
We held our meeting in the STEM Innovation hub on Wednesday the 27 July 2022. Hon Meaghan Scanlon was in the position to be able to attend this meeting, we were happy to see her in attendance. WSS P&C have previously liaised with the HON Meaghan Scanlon about the WSS Community fundraising for STEM Robotics. She recently announced that she is donating a Robotics Kit to our school for a girls’ team to start competing in competitions around the state and abroad. We are very excited to now have at least one kit for both a girl and boys’ team to start competing. Hon Meaghan Scanlon advised that the kits have arrived and will be given to our STEM program this week. Exciting!
We would also like to welcome a fellow parent: Sally Paolini who has kindly approached the committee to assist the executive team in sharing the secretary position with Katie Herviou. Thank you and we welcome you on board.
WSS P&C Committee voted on.
- Contributing $300 to the library financial resources to purchase new books
- To purchase our own DJ lighting etc to fit in with our ‘sustainable contributions’. This allows us to have more discos more frequently with no further costings.
- Subsidising the year 5 & 6 ‘Life Education – ‘Talk About it’, so students can receive both modules of learning as outline in the parent information letter. WSS P&C Committee have also provided contingencies moving forward in relation to Life Education.
GENERAL
We have been asked to put a call out to our school and wider community for some items required around the school. If you can assist with any donations from the list below, we would greatly appreciate it. These can be dropped to the Uniform Store on Thursday mornings.
- Lego & K’nex (& motors) items for STEM
- Dressmaker Pins/ Safety Pins for our art displays on Grandparent’s Day.
- Black plain fabric (eg poplin) in larger length measurements- for art displays on Grandparent’s Day.
