FROM THE PRINCIPAL

On behalf of Worongary State School, I welcome you to Term 1 of 2023. Again, I am looking forward to working with you to help our school succeed, and our students to succeed.
Communication with staff
If you have any questions regarding your child’s class, please contact the classroom teacher in the first instance. If you have further concerns, please contact the office via phone or email to arrange your child’s sector Deputy Principal to contact you.
Apps to download
At Worongary we use a range of applications that can be used via your smart phone to keep informed of events and communication with the school:
*The Worongary State School Facebook Page. We share community events, celebrate school successes and keep the wider community informed on what is happening at Worongary State School. Please like, follow and celebrate the posts.

*ClassDojo is used for multiple purposes at Worongary State School. It is used to reward positive behaviour across the school through points. Also, it is used for short communication with your child’s teacher and whole school messages.

*QSchools is an app that integrates the school’s website allowing you to:
- find and favourite your school by searching for the school by name, searching a map or by searching for schools near your current location
- receive real-time notifications about state wide emergency alerts as well as school push notifications and important updates through the app
- access the latest news, events and newsletters
- easily access tuckshop and uniform shop information
- view information about our school including class times and contact details
- view social media feeds.
The app can manage updates from multiple schools which is useful for parents who have students in different schools
Assemblies
Fortnightly sector assemblies have commenced this week. This is a great opportunity to celebrate student successes, share the fortnightly Positive Behaviour for Learning focus and discuss upcoming events with the students. Monday 2.15-3.00pm will be the years 3-6 assembly and Tuesday 2.15-3.00pm will be P-2 assembly. Our next assembly will be the week of 13 February.
First P&C Meeting
We would love your attendance at our first P&C Meeting for 2023. This is an exciting year with the school turning thirty! Come along 😊

Looking forward to a brilliant year at Worongary State School!

Welcome back to 2023 and I’m looking forward to another amazing year in STEM with our students.
On 8 of December, 2022 Worongary State School took three teams to the VEX Nationals competition hosted at Sydney Olympic Park for three action packed days of robotics competition. Team SS33007S (Noah, Harman and Lulu) won the overall Teamwork Challenge (Elementary Division) and have been invited to participate at Worlds in Texas in April-May this year.
Our new rookie teams WSS19931B and #GirlPowered Team WSS19931C competed well with Team 19931B represented by Noah K, Spencer and Jesse, also placing 8th in the finals.
A huge thank you to all of our parents who were able to fly/drive to Sydney to support our robotics teams to participate and have this wonderful experience.

Last Wednesday selected students from Years 5 and 6 continued to work with Dr Harry as part of our Cooler Schools Citizen Science Project. Students were exploring the effects of heat and experimenting with ways to cool down.

More information will be communicated shortly via Class Dojo and our school Facebook page regarding other STEM extra-curricula initiatives for students including esports, robotics, Code of Origin Challenge and The Buzz about Bees Science and Art competition.
Kind regards,
Mrs Pikunic (Mrs P)
JAPANESE

Jingeri Japanese

Welcome back to the 2023 school year everyone. My name is Vanessa Shimomura (Sensei) and I am very excited to be joining the Worongary State School Community this year, teaching across Years 5 and 6. I look forward to working with your young people to ensure the best possible learning outcomes in Japanese, in a fun and engaging way. 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit. Many of our Year 6 cohort, who were born in 2011, are ‘Rabbits’. Rabbits are generally clever, skilful, kind, patient and responsible. Over the course of Week 1 I have witnessed these qualities in our young people, making it a positive start to the
new year.
Culture Vultures…
Shougatsu or Oshougatsu, is a celebration around New Year in Japan. Like Christmas for us, in Japan between January 1-3, it is a time for families to come together to celebrate and make wishes for prosperity and good health for the year ahead. Around this time, people send New Year’s wishes in the form of a postcard (nengajou), unlike our tradition of Christmas cards. It is a tradition to eat particular foods over this period of time, which include buckwheat noodles (soba), pounded rice cakes (mochi) served in a traditional stew (zouni), and special dishes (osechi ryouri). People will make their first visit of the year to their local temple or shrine (hatsumoude) and enjoy the first sunrise of the year (hatsuhinode). And children can look forward to small gifts of cash given in special paper envelopes (otoshidama).

PSYCHOLOGIST
Dear Parents and carers,
Do you have questions about your child's education or development? Do you want to chat with other parents who might have the same questions (or who might have the answers!)? Would you like to enjoy a cuppa and cake after dropping your little darlings at school?
Well, the wellbeing staff at Worongary State School want to meet you!
We are starting up a 'coffee and chat hub' on Wednesday mornings to give you a safe place to connect and chat with other parents and members of our team. We look forward to sharing some relevant information about child development, parenting tips, and ways for you to look after your own wellbeing.
In our first well-being catch up members of our wellbeing staff will be present. We would love to get to know you and find out what you would want in this space.
Please bring any questions, suggestions for future school, parenting and wellbeing discussions, or just join us to connect and get to know some of the school community.

HEALTH ROOM
FROM THE HEALTH ROOM
Welcome to 2023! It is fantastic to be back at school and to see our students bouncing around with happy faces. Students are sporting new uniforms, clumpy black school shoes yet to be worn in and fresh haircuts all round. Lovely. 😊
If your student has a medical condition could you please advise us if there have been any changes to their condition, no matter how minor. This could be due to their medication requirements, a change to their asthma plan or any new diagnoses that may have occurred recently. Keeping your student’s health records up to date assists us to help your student/s when they visit the health room.
Having your contact phone numbers current and an emergency contact available is also vital should we need to contact you if your child is unwell or needs to go home.
Thank you.
Miss Kath – Health Room
