FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Welcome Mrs Templeton

I would like to welcome Mrs Natalie Templeton to our school as the Head of Special Education Services for the remainder of the year. Mrs Templeton was selected on merit across the Statewide recruitment process and was highly recommended. Welcome to Worongary!

Congratulations Ms Wales

Congratulations to Jo Wales on her promotion to AO3 Enrolment Officer at Foxwell State Secondary College for the remaining of the year. Friday will be Jo’s last day and we wish her every success in her new role.

Active school travel this week

We had our first active school travel breakfast to promote this positive be initiate. Again, thank you to the parents who attended by walking, riding or scootering to school. Also thank you to the volunteering staff who handed out healthy snacks and those who are in the background who are active school travel committee members. A huge thank you to Nerang Woolworths who again continue to support the healthy breakfast for our school.

To support this initiative, I am seeking the parents’ support on discussing safe travel with their children who ride their bikes or scooters to school. This includes wearing of helmets, using paths for travel and using the designated pedestrian crossings on their journey. We would all agree that the safety of our children is a priority in our school. Let’s work together to help our children stay safe.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole-school framework which promotes positive behaviour across our school and helps develop safe and supportive learning environments for all students. A PBL approach ensures that we teach positive behaviour strategies just like we would teach academic subjects.

Click here to view the PBL for Parents flyer

https://behaviour.education.qld.gov.au/supportingStudentBehaviour/PositiveBehaviourforLearning/Documents/pbl-parent-information.pdf

At Worongary State School, all of our school rules are aligned to our school expectations, which you can see around the school:

  • Be Safe
  • Be Respectful
  • Be a Learner

We use a proactive and preventative approach to ensure all students are explicitly taught the expected behaviours. Each fortnight we focus on a particular aspect of the school rule matrix and students are explicitly taught this. Each fortnight the focus expectation will be shared with our family community. You can support your child, for example, by engaging in conversations around the dinner table or on the drive to school.

This fortnight’s expectation is Before School Expectations.

PSYCHOLOGIST

Wellbeing psychology – Helping with change

The beginning of the school year brings lots of changes for children: new classrooms, classmates, teachers, and class routines, as well as all the new learning! Change is part of life for all of us. As adults we have a lot of experience to help us deal with changes.

Children have less experience with change, so at the start of the new school year, not only are they getting back into the business of formal learning, they also have to work hard to make sense of new environments, situations and people in their new class. You may have noticed your child having a mix of successes and challenges as they get used to their new learning environment and all the changes that this brings

Helping children with change

Parents and carers can help children to adjust to the changes the new school year brings. Below are some ideas on how to help children manage changes (from the “Be You” website):

  • Plan – think about what might be easy and what might be tricky for your child when returning to school. For the parts that may be tricky, problem solving and talking to your child and teacher about how to manage these things can help. For example, if your child is shy, you might develop a plan for ways to feel more at ease around new people, or set up some play dates with new classmates
  • Share optimism – promoting the positive aspects of change without downplaying the difficulties can help children adopt a positive yet realistic approach.
  • Communicate – talk to your child about what is going well and why, what is tricky and what else they could try. Talk to your child’s teacher and read communications that come home from the class.
  • Monitor progress – once you and your child have tried some things to help with the change, check in. Have a think and talk about what is working and what might need more work or problem-solving.
  • Notice success – regularly make time to discuss with your child what they notice that is going well. Congratulate your child for what they have been able to achieve. Drawing attention to successes, helps children to see that they can navigate new situations.

JAPANESE

Culture Vultures…

On February 3, Japan celebrated ‘Setsubun’ or ‘Bean Throwing Festival’. It is held to mark the official end of winter and the beginning of spring according to the old lunar calendar. This festival is closely tied to New Year celebrations. Rituals are held on this day to drive away evil spirits and welcome good fortune for the year ahead. This is done by throwing roasted soy beans, known as ‘Mamemaki’. Another custom is to eat ‘Ehomaki’ (or ‘Lucky Direction’ sushi roll), a unique type of sushi roll. Usually only eaten around this time, it consists of 7 ingredients, which may include any combination of salmon, tuna, crab meat, salmon roe, prawns, eel, egg, cucumber, avocado, tofu, carrots, shiitake mushrooms and lettuce. It must be eaten all at once, facing the ‘lucky’ direction to bring good luck for the year.

HEALTH ROOM

Welcome to 2023! It is fantastic to be back at school and to see our students bouncing around with happy faces. Students are sporting new uniforms, clumpy black school shoes yet to be worn in and fresh haircuts all round. Lovely.

If your student has a medical condition could you please advise us if there have been any changes to their condition, no matter how minor. This could be due to their medication requirements, a change to their asthma plan or any new diagnoses that may have occurred recently. Keeping your student’s health records up to date assists us to help your student/s when they visit the health room.

Having your contact phone numbers current and an emergency contact available is also vital should we need to contact you if your child is unwell or needs to go home.

Thank you.
Miss Kath – Health Room

P&C NEWS

GENERAL

Welcome, & welcome back, to all our school families & students, for another year of schooling. Woohoo!

The WSS P&C are a small group of dedicated volunteers working together to improve the facilities and opportunities available at our school. We do this by operating the tuckshop, uniform store and fundraising events. These events have been Discos, Colour fun runs, Trivia nights, Special end-of-term meal deals and many other fundraising spectaculars.

The monies fundraised during these events goes towards making our school, a cool school, and we don't mean for air conditioning! - We've done that!! We mean, cool/hip/fun, but without being 'Too cool for school'... if you know what we mean.

We strive to make the schooling experience better for your children and our own. Hence our motto 'Working together for our children'.

If you are keen to get involved and volunteer with the WSS P&C, please do not hesitate to email Tracy at pandc@worongaryss.eq.edu.au.

Please join our Facebook page at the below QR Code. You will be in the know for everything WSS P&C Related.

Existing Families - As we have started a new year, it is very important that you sign into your QKR! App and update your children/s class and year details. We still have many children who have either not received their tuckshop, or by the time they receive it it may be cold/warm as a result of them going to the wrong year level or class. To avoid this, we are asking all families to follow the below instructions to ensure this is updated -

  1. Sign into your QKR! account/ Open QKR! App.
  2. Tap 'Profiles'
  3. Tap the child's name under 'manage Profiles' of whose details you wish to edit.
  4. Tap the 'year' and select from the drop-down menu the new year level.
  5. Tap 'class' and select from the drop-down menu the new class level e.g 4D
  6. Tap update profile at the bottom of the page to save changes.
  7. Repeat the process from #2 onwards for other children in your family.

  • After this time, you will need to contact Paul or Caitlin in the tuckshop on 55024426 to advise. If contacted early enough- the order will be moved to another day of your choosing.
