SER School Captains Leadership Camp
On 6th and 7th March, our four school Captains attended the Runaway Bay Sport and Leadership Centre with other School Captains from 16 schools across the South East Region.
The summit focussed on Character Strength Workshops: Leader to Self; team building activities; ways to positively influence their peers; heard from guest speakers Taneille Crase and Moyra Major and finally shared a school action plan to principals and school leaders representing their schools.
Congratulations to our school leaders on their participation and confidence when sharing their action plan to the school leaders and fellow school captains.

New Dojo Reward System
There is much excitement in the air with the announcement of the new Dojo Acknowledgement system. Staff and students have been developing and giving feedback over the current Dojo reward system. Students currently receive Dojo points through the Class Dojo App. Please see the rewards that were gathered by staff and students below.

Over the Counter purchases – school tuckshop
There has been an increased number of students bringing $50 notes to purchase items over the counter in our tuckshop. Can you please hand your children smaller denominations to limit the chance of large financial losses.
Clean up Australia Day 5 March
Thank you, Meagan Scanlan, for visiting our school and participating in our Clean Up Australia Day event. Our Year 6 students collected rubbish around our school and in our neighbouring park.
P&C AGM Date Claimer: 3 May 2023 4:15 Staff Room
Every year parents are putting up their hand to volunteer their time as executive members of our P&C. For this… we are truly thankful!
If you would like to be a part of the executive, we meet monthly in the teacher’s staffroom from 4:15pm to around 6pm to discuss the operations of the P&C, their fundraisers and how they are supporting the school. If you have any questions around this, please contact me via the office.
Respect our Neighbours

We are very fortunate to have neighbours that support our school. During holiday periods they report trespasses for us and keep an eye out over our school. We need to be considerate of them too. They need to be able to move freely from their property at any time of the day. Some of our neighbours have had water pipes broken from cars parking on the footpath or too close to the drain pipes.
Please remember:
- Parking in, on or across driveways is illegal
- Cars need to abide by road signs
- It is illegal for the back end or front end of your car to cause an obstruction to a driveway
- Parking up on the footpath is illegal and can cause damage to pipes
- Let’s ensure that our supportive community are safe and feel respected.

Adam

Getting a good night’s sleep is essential for our physical and emotional health. Our kids need good night sleep for them to be successful in school. The video below provides information to improve sleep habits, which can affect all areas of wellbeing - physical, cognitive, social, personal, and psychological.

SPECIAL EDUCATION – HEAD OF INCLUSION
Greeting from the Inclusion Team,
Our Inclusion team are very busy of late, meeting with families, school staff and NDIS providers to close the loop on student needs.
Our Student Support Services (SSS) team will soon be working on helping staff and students involved with new referrals, to provide considered adjustments or actions. If your child’s class teacher asks if they can discuss your child at SSS, please know the prerequisite for referrals is usually for home to share the results from hearing and vision tests.
Occasionally, we find students who are having difficulty with their learning may have underlying vision or hearing difficulties. Please remember tests should be carried out annually to support the school to make appropriate adjustments.
Social Emotional Support Is Out There
Whether you are a young person or an adult supporting a young person, professional-led online chats, hosted by trained mental health clinicians and vocational specialists, cover a range of topics to help answer any questions you may have.
Please find these free chats at:

Effective Praise

Effective praise helps build positive relationships between parents and children. Parenting research suggests effective use of praise can help to increase children’s motivation, persistence, and their use of wanted behaviours.
Tips for delivering effective praise
- Praise what your child can change. Some things are within children’s control, while other things are not. Some things children can change include effort, practice, trying again, problem solving and trying a different way, working well and respectfully with peers.
- Be specific. Specific praise such as “You started packing up as soon as I asked” helps your child to know what the desirable behaviour was.
- Timely. Giving praise as soon as possible after the behaviour or accomplishment helps reinforce the behaviour and lets your child know that you are paying attention. When your child is out in public and verbal praise could be intrusive, smiles, eye contact and other gestures can subtly convey timely praise.
- Be genuine and sincere. Praise should be genuine and heartfelt. Children can tell when praise is insincere or exaggerated.
- Avoid comparison to other children. Praising children through comparing to others, may lead to children judging themselves against others.
- Have realistic expectations. Have age-appropriate expectations for children. This can be tricky in families with more than one child. For example, a task, such as putting toys away, means something different for a toddler than it does a school aged child. When praising both children, choose age-appropriate praise for each child. Perhaps thank the older child for picking up all the toys, while complimenting the effort of the younger child.
- Be consistent. Make praise a regular part of your communication with your child. This helps create a positive environment that reinforces good behaviour and boosts self-esteem.

ARE YOU WALKING OR WHEELING EACH WEDNESDAY? - JOIN THE AST GROUP, WE'D LOVE TO SEE YOU!
An AST committee member will be meeting up with families to walk with them from the Kenneth Drive cul de sac (Park and Stride location at the far end of the park, opposite the school). This will continue each Wednesday until the end of the term. The teacher will be walking with the families and not in place of parents or caregivers. If this becomes a worthwhile endeavour, we may include our other Park and Stride location in future terms.
We look forward to seeing you next Wednesday and enjoying another Worongary State School community activity.

UNIFORM NEWS
Our 2023 Senior Shirts are due to arrive any day now…. We are very excited! But probably not as excited as our 2023 year 6 students will be. We will post a picture of this year’s chosen design once we have it in our hot little hands!
We have already started the process in requesting designs for our 2024 Senior shirts. We are hoping to have this available for the current year 5 students to vote on the design they wish to be theirs, as they enter 2024 last senior year. Pre order will be available in term 4, and we are hopeful to have them ready earlier in term 1 of 2024. Stay Tuned.
We have plenty of uniform stock on hand. You can purchase your uniform needs through the QKR! App and these will be collated and available for collection from the tuckshop. We send a paper notification in the tuckshop boxes that go to the class and the individual child will attend the tuckshop and collect them. Or alternatively parents can attend to collect the uniforms upon proof of purchase either at the Uniform store on Thursdays between 8am-9:30am or attend the Tuckshop between 8:30am- 2pm. We do ask, please try not to attend during the meal service times if this is your option to collect.
FUNDRAISING
Containers for change
Term 1 2023- We would like to thank the school community for their ongoing support with this initiative. Every term we are allocating the monies raised from simply recycling those eligible containers with us at school. This year all the proceeds are going to assist the Music Cohort.
Our remaining collection dates for term 1 are: -
Friday 17th March
Friday 31st March.
In Term 2 our collection will be distributed to assist the STEM Program. Term 3 & 4 are yet to be officially decided- however stay tuned for an update.
BATTLE OF THE SCHOOLS- Container collection Incentive- Express Recycling Nerang has decided to run their Battle of the schools Collection incentive for the second time. We have been fortunate enough to be invited to participate again. What does this mean? Just by collecting & recycling (as we do) we have the opportunity to win a prize. We would love to be able to increase our recycling initiative over this time… Eligible prizes for our schools means we could win an additional $500 towards our distribution allocation, just for continuing and increasing our efforts in recycling. WOAH! Promotional dates: Start Term 2- 17th April 2023- Term 3- 8th September 2023.
Worongary SS Scheme ID C10179198, just input our scheme ID when attending the recycling centres with your eligible containers. We thank you in advance for your kind contribution in advance.
The Categories-
Prize 1- the highest number of
eligible containers collected & recycled during the promotion period.
e.g. Collection just from our school.
Prize 2- the highest number of eligible
containers collected with community support during the promotional period.
e.g. attending collection locations and advising the money to be assigned
to our scheme ID.
DISCO
We would like to give a big shout out to our volunteers at our recent Term 1 Disco ‘Out of this World’ event. Without your ongoing support with volunteering your time, these events would not be successful or even able to occur. The students had a marvellous time and most certainly rocked the house! We mean Hall! 😊
Our Discos will be occurring on the Thursday in week 5 of every Term. If you missed the last one- we hope to see you at the next one. Next disco 28th MAY 2023 – no theme- just dress to impress and dance the afternoon/evening away.
COLOUR FOAM-RAISER
WSS P&C Are running their OWN Colour fun run this year, what this means is that we are not using an external company to assist us with the event like we have in the past. There are a number of reasons as to why we made this decision. Firstly, we wanted to reduce the fees in which we have had to pay towards the external company- which some took up to 43% of our fundraising efforts, and we feel that this should remain with our school to improve our facilities, resources and provide other needed items to enrich the school experience for all our children who attend WSS. IN addition, to keep trying to be more sustainable for our planet, we have decided to forgo the small prize incentives, in reality they end up in landfill. So instead we are looking at Cohort prizes in the form of a Pizza, Popcorn & Popper Party, 3 x level prizes for Junior, middle and senior school. Plus, you may get an opportunity to witness some of our WSS School staff get slimed!!!!
We have had to change our original date for the WSS Colour Foam-raiser which was 31st March 2023, this is a result of overlapping and conflicting school scheduling. HOWEVER, we were able to confirm a new date of 27th APRIL 2023- YAY!
For the event to be a success, we do need the help of our School community. Volunteering on the day is one of the main needs, and it is a bit of fun too!!! We will be advertising on our Facebook page when the volunteer sign-up sheet is up and running.
Our Online fundraising platform goes live THIS Friday 17th MARCH. We have spot prizes throughout the online donation period dates. Just for signing up and obtaining a minimum $10 donation by 24th March you could go in the draw to win a prize! Yeah, it’s that easy!
Go to our safe online fundraising Hub to sign up and start sharing your profile link to family and friends and obtain donations for our Colour Foam-raiser initiative- Playground facility improvements:
https://worongarysscolourfoamrun.goraiseit.com.au/hub
We hope this is our last fundraising initiative towards our Playground improvements and then can get underway with the installation. Plus, we can start to concentrate on other projects.
Playgrounds are a big cost ticket item within schools, and require specific approved companies to be used and meet strict requirements, hence why we have stated this initiative a few times.
PRIZE DONATION REQUESTS
We have a few events coming up in Term 2- Our COLOUR FOAMRAISER & TRIVIA Night.
We are reaching out on behalf of WSS P&C team, if you and/or your business are in the position to make a kind prize donation towards our events. Please contact Tracy our WSS P&C president with the details of the donated prize/s and your permission to use either your family name or Business name/logo and we’ll feature your logo and name on our Facebook page, newsletter and any other promotional materials, as a sign of our gratitude of your kind donation and support.
Colour FOAMRIASER Prizes are for our students first, second or third prize for each Junior, middle and senior school, or additional incentive prizes throughout the sponsorship donation period.
Trivia Prizes are for our adults attending our school event. Can be individual related or family activity related.
