Eisteddfod
Worongary just keeps getting better and better. I was thrilled to receive this email from Cindy Ashton, (Senior Instrumental Music Teacher). "I just thought I would share our Eisteddfod news with you all. The Concert Band received 3rd Place. There were 11 bands in the section and our students did a fantastic job performing and representing the school."
Well done students and thank you.
P&C

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our hardworking and dedicated P&C team. I urge you to support them in their efforts. You are all invited to attend the P&C meeting on the second Tuesday of every month at 5.30 pm in the staff room. You can also help by donating some time to help in the canteen or uniform shop, or by helping at the upcoming Fathers' Day stall or at the disco next term.

Respect our Staff
As parents and carers we always want to ensure that our children are happy and learning

at school. Sometimes issues arise where, as a result of our different beliefs, expectations and experiences, there are inevitably going to be times where conflicts or disagreements occur in schools.
The safety of our students and staff is the number one priority and everyone in the community plays a part in ensuring learning environments are safe.
All members of the community are encouraged to work together to prevent abuse and violence directed towards school staff. This is not just courtesy, it's the law.
If you think that there is an issue that needs discussing, or you are dissatisfied with something, please do not hesitate to make an appointment to speak with the teacher or raise the issue with the relevant member of administration. It is not appropriate to address a staff member directly without notice if you wish to raise such an issue. It is highly inappropriate to speak aggressively or rudely to a staff member at any time, especially in front of students and other adults.
If a person is deemed to be 'hostile' the Principal can prohibit entry to the school grounds, without the direct permission of the Principal, for up to 60 days with a possibility of prohibiting for up to 12 months.
It is essential that we, as adults, model to students how to manage conflicts or differences of opinion.
Attendance
Student attendance is an indicator of success at school. While we do recognize that students, just like adults, do become ill and are unable to attend some days, it is important that they are present every day they are well. This includes being on time for the commencement of every school day, and remaining until the end of the day. Our times are 9.00 am to 3.00 pm, with the first bell at 8.50am.
If you are unsure of your child's current attendance rate please do not hesitate to contact your class teacher via Dojo or email or in person to find out. Our target is 95% attendance, students who attain 95% or greater attendance are acknowledged every term.

Parent Interaction with Students
Over the course of the term we have had some incidences were Parents have approached other people's children on school grounds to question them about incidents, reprimand them for their behaviour or tell them not to go near their child. If you have an issue that needs to be resolved please report it to the classroom teacher and they will investigate the situation or engage members of the administration team to do so if necessary. It is not appropriate for a parent or guardian to approach anyone else's child on school grounds regarding these matters.
Please be aware that this behaviour is not acceptable and is a breach of The Code of School Behaviour which states that;
All members of school communities are expected to:
- conduct themselves in a lawful, ethical, safe and responsible manner that recognises and respects the rights of others.
If a parent/guardian continued to behave in this manner or behaved in a way that was perceived to be aggressive they would fall under the Queensland Government Hostile People on School Premises, Wilful Disturbance and Trespass Policy. This could mean being issued with a direction of movement, a 30 day good behaviour direction or in extreme cases a 60 day ban from the school site.
Year 4 Camp
As you would already be aware the Year 4 Currumbin Farm Camp is fast approaching and will be held for 4G & 4Y on Monday 12 September – Wednesday 14 September and for 4B & 4R Wednesday 14 September – Friday 16 September. The last day for internet payment is 30 August, credit card payment (prior to 10am) is 2 September and payment office (between 8am – 10am) is 2 September.
It is requested that in preparation for camp, that you discuss with your child the importance of demonstrating positive and appropriate behaviour at school in the lead up to camp and whilst they are away participating in this activity. A requirement of attending Currumbin Farm Camp is to consistently demonstrate safe, compliant and respectful behaviour. As in all out of school activities a risk assessment has been completed and it is imperative that all students attending the camp demonstrate behaviour that is in line with the Worongary State School Responsible Behaviour Plan.
If your child's behaviour is inappropriate in the lead up to camp, a meeting or phone call will be established between administration, the classroom teacher and our behaviour specialist to discuss possible removal from attending the camp. In addition if your child's behaviour is inappropriate at camp, Parent/Guardians will be contacted to collect their child from the camp venue.
If you have concerns regarding your child attending the camp please see their classroom teacher.

Griffith University Science Competition Update

Thank you to all the students who have indicated they are interested in entering the 2016 Science Competition. We have a wide range of scientific ideas across all the year levels which is pleasing to see.
To complete the process, students who have shown interest will be asked for entry confirmation. This means they confirm they are able to complete the project on time. Mrs Taylor will visit students so that nominations can be confirmed and registered online by the school on Thursday 18 August. To avoid disappointment students can withdraw their entry before this date (18 August) and should consider re-entering next year if they need more time.
Once students have stated they are committed to finishing, entries are due at the school on Thursday 25 August. All finished entries will be delivered by the school to Griffith University on Monday 29 August. Please remember every entry will need a scientific notebook and letter of authentication stating that the work submitted is their own.

BEHAVIOUR
Please discuss with your children the need to continually focus on our three school rules. I am a Learner, I am Safe and I am Respectful. In particular, safe and respectful play during break times. In the past fortnight there has been a spike in physical misconduct. We always have staff on duty and procedures are followed. We appreciate your support in discussing this focus with your children.

FROM THE SPORTS DESK
Year 5 Girls' Soccer
After winning the Gold Coast Schools' crossover final against St Andrews Lutheran College, our Yr 5 girls headed to Brisbane for the SE Qld Schools Soccer Tournament along with Mr Townson, Mr Milne and a handful of parents. Unfortunately Mrs Janes, also the girls' coach, couldn't be with the team on this day.
The girls had 4 games to play, each being 20 minutes of solid play with no breaks. We went down in our first game 1-0 to a feisty team from Patrick Road SS. Mr Townson fired up the girls during the break and the team took to the field with their game faces on and came back roaring to win our next 2 games against Moreton Downs SS and Sunnybank Hills SS with scores of 2-1 and 1-0 respectively.
The girls were on a high as we faced our last game against Wondall Heights SS in the round robin -it was do or die to book a spot for the finals. Although the girls played their best, we drew which meant we lost our opportunity to play against the feisty bunch we had first played earlier in the morning. We missed a spot in the finals by one measly point!
The entire team represented Worongary extremely well in both their sportsmanship and behaviour on and off the field and were a credit to the school. A huge thank you to Mr Townson and Mrs Janes- who did another excellent job coaching for the season. Next year we will be fitter and stronger and will be eyeing off that trophy!

Rugby Union State Champions
Congratulations to Reico R who represented Worongary State School at the Rugby Union State Championship. They were successful in winning the State Championship defeating Sunshine Coast 21-15. Well done Reico!

FROM THE CLASSROOMS
Year 2 Red and 2 Yellow have been exploring living things and learning about life cycles in our science unit this term.
We have been having fun observing the life stages of a plant by growing broad beans in class.
Our classes will be climbing the beanstalk in no time.

As an enhancement to our understanding of History, Year 2 visited the Beenleigh Historical Museum and Village and Maid of Sker to further our understanding of how life and technology has changed over time. The children were excited to relive a day at school in the 1890's, to visit the saw mill and hear stories about how hard life was when Europeans settled in Australia, do laundry without machines and look at the olden day fire engine.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT

Music Corner
Choirs- Rosella choir have performed at the Senior assembly on Monday 15 August in preparation for their Eisteddfod performance at the Arts Centre on Monday 22 August at 12:30. All are welcome to attend this performance at the Arts Centre. Thank you to the parents who have paid the excursion fees and sent in their parental permission slips. Extra rehearsals will take place on Thursday 18 August at 8:00, Thursday 2:10 - 3:00, Friday 19 August 8:00 and finally Monday 22 August at 8:00 the day of the Eisteddfods. Lorikeet choir rehearsals will be Tuesday morning 16 August as normal and lunchtime and Wednesday 17 August at 2nd lunch break and Tuesday 23 August at 8:00am (normal practice) and the day of their Eisteddfod.
Strings - congratulations to our wonderful String players who performed for the first time for most players at an Eisteddfod. When I asked one student how the experience was he replied, "it was epic." I thought that was classic.

Tuckshop
Friendly Reminders
I would like to remind you all of a few important things:
- There are no EFTPOS facilities in the Tuckshop. Cash only over the counter and Online ordering is available as the alternative to cash.
- NO CREDIT: As per P&C Qld regulations, we are unable to provide credit to anyone and thank you in advance for not asking, as refusal may offend. We are however able to accept payments in advance, to hold on account, in preparation for those days that just won't run smoothly!
- NO LUNCH: If for some reason you realise that your child has no lunch at school e.g. forgotten to order online/child left lunch at home then you have the option to either bring your child some lunch or arrange for a family member to do so. If neither of these options are feasible, your child will be sent to the school admin office who will contact you to arrange for a basic emergency lunch to be provided to your child. Please do not call the Tuckshop directly.
- As a Tuckshop servicing a school of just under 800 students, we are very busy – especially with our new breakfast menu on the horizon. If you choose to order tuckshop manually, it would be very helpful if children could put orders in the tuckshop baskets in their classrooms rather than dropping them off to the Tuckshop before class, as many have been doing lately.
Canteen Week Celebrations
Meal Deals: Canteen Week flew by at a record pace and our meal deals flew out the window, with some proving more popular than others.
Gold medal went to 'Friday for USA'
Silver medal went to 'Thursday for Italy'

Online Ordering
If you haven't already used online ordering and would like to give it a try you can register an account with Schoolshop Online by following the links on the school website.
Key things to note about online ordering are:
- Online ordering is great for busy parents. Orders can be placed online at your convenience.
- Any orders placed online will be processed on the next uniform shop day (Monday/Wednesday/Friday) and a note will be sent to your child's classroom via the Tuckshop basket so they know when to collect it from the Tuckshop. Please let your child/ren know to keep an eye out for the note. Also please be aware that due to the Uniform Shop hours being in the afternoon on Wednesdays, orders processed on this day can be expected to reach your children on the following Thursday.
- Please ensure that you include your child's details as well as your own on the form i.e. name and current class.
- Please be sure to update your child/children's class for each new school year. The account profiles for Tuckshop and Uniform shop are not linked.
