Safe and Happy Holidays

On behalf of the staff of Worongary State School we wish all our students and their families a safe and happy holiday and we look forward to seeing you all back in Term 3 on Monday 10 July.

The holidays can, however, be a challenging time for some families and young people with many stresses impacting daily. Health and wellbeing, including physical and mental health, are important influences in our daily functioning as individuals, families and community groups. Mental Health is a positive state of wellbeing used to describe emotional and social wellness.

It involves feeling positive about ourselves, the people and events in our lives, and being able to live life to our fullest capacity. Mental health is an essential part of our overall health and affects our physical health and our physical health also affects our mental health. It is important for parents to look after their own and their children’s mental and physical health. Regular exercise, healthy eating, adequate sleep, having a community of support around the family, thinking good thoughts, seeking help if feeling down, doing things for others, keeping busy and involved and adding humour are some ways of doing this.

There are also a number of community supports that offer assistance to families and young people. The following offer various avenues of support for families and young people:

Family & Child Connect – Ph: 13 32 64; Benevolent Society – Ph: 5644 9100; Doctors (GP’s); Parentline – 1300 301 300 www.parentline.com.au; Kids Helpline – 1800 55 1800 www.kidshelp.com.au; Child Youth Mental Health Service Ph: 5635 6392; Community Health Centres; Foodbanks - United City Car Warehouse, 4/22 New St, Nerang open Thursday 2.30 pm – 4.00 pm Food parcels $17, New Life Food Barn Bank Ph: 5571 6115

Curriculum Corner

Hello again,

With the up and coming holidays fast approaching, it is a particularly great time to snuggle up with books. The weather is well suited for some changes in routine and enjoying books. Take advantage of a sunny spot outside while we are having this mild weather.

I am reposting the following message as it is so important:-

The most important thing when reading is making sense. Remember if your child is only reading words on the page, then they are not really reading. We need children to understand what they are reading. Even fluent, advanced readers can lack understanding when reading texts. It is important that children realise this and stop and self-correct. Reading is a valuable tool and skill for your child to master for life.

Once children and adults master understanding text, it really does give you power. It can open doors to a whole new world.

I would like to wish you all a safe and happy school holidays. Please take the time to recharge and come back to school with enthusiasm for another term of important learning. Regardless of our age we never stop learning.

Until next time………. Happy Reading

Kind Regards Leslie Ward, Head of Curriculum

News from 3M

The students in 3M have been creating their own procedures and presenting them to the class. We have a had a range of procedures including, 'How to make a paper aeroplane', 'How to clean crystals', and 'How to make friendship bracelets.'

The children have been very engaged not only on their own presentation but because they are learning new skills.

Please take the time to look at 2 of the power points that were created.

Behaviour

Year 6 Families

On Thursday 13 July the Year 6 students will be participating is a series of games and activities to enhance team building and to raise the level of interest in sport. Two Titan's representatives are visiting the school. The students will participate with their class teacher present and Teacher Aide Joshua Rogers to assist with supervision. The students will attend for 60 minutes in 4 groups 9-10 am, 10-11 am, 11.40-12.40 and 12.40-1.40. Please remind your children to wear their black school sport shoes on this day.

For the last two weeks of term 2 our behaviour focus is to ‘Finish Strong’. We encourage our students

  1. Get organised: Tidy up their room, school bag and desk. This de-cluttering effort will help your child stay focused and more productive.
  2. Limit distractions: Set and enforce limits on social media and other electronic devices.
  3. Encourage exercise: one 30-minute session per day of vigorous exercise can lead to improvements in memory and motor skill coordination.
  4. Rest and eat well: a healthy schedule of eight to nine hours of sleep each night and to eat a well-balanced diet with plenty of fresh water to drink.
  5. Communicate: Talk with your child about classes, classmates, teachers, friends, activities, and goals for the next school term.
  6. Attendance: Every day counts.

Wishing all our families a safe and relaxing Winter Break.

Kind Regards
Ms Kaia

Sport

Year 6 Soccer Boys

This season our Year 6A soccer team faced tough competition from other schools in the local region. Each and every week our Worongary boys turned up ready to play and perform their best. Our 6A boys took pride in playing their positions and playing them well. Whether the boys were in goal, defence or up on the attack they all knew they had a role to play as part of the team. Even though the boys didn't finish as high in the standings as they would have hoped their effort and dedication every week was testament to their good sportsmanship and sense of fair play.

Our Year 6B team had a fantastic season, finishing in 2nd place overall. The boys would have had the opportunity to compete for 1st place in the grand final but unfortunately wet weather meant the game was cancelled. The 6B team played a balanced game all season mixing solid defence with a co-ordinated attack. Over the course of the season the boys found more ways to share the ball and utilise the whole field to create scoring opportunities. Every single member of our 6B team was able to finish the season with his head held high, knowing he had played a key role in qualifying for the grand final. Well done.

Years 4 & 5 Soccer Wrap-up

The Yr 4A & 5B teams trained as one squad from the beginning of the season. With only five Year 5s, our year 4 students were eager and willing to “play-up”. This responsibility was shared among all of the Year 4s. This was a mighty effort and it resulted in more game time for most players. Training sessions were well attended and skill development was very evident as the season progressed. Players had the opportunity to experience a variety of positions before taking on one more consistently towards the end of the season. Both teams had mixed success in competition games, but the team spirit that developed, win, lose or draw, was admirable. A very rewarding season for all involved.

Cross Country

Congratulations to Molli M, Grace M and Amelia T who recently represented Oceania at the recent Cross Country Regional competition.

Student Council

Thank you to everyone who supported our State of Origin themed Free Dress Day. We raised a whopping $578.85 which will go towards the senior playground. Student Councillors met with Mrs Moballe this week to have a look at some potential playground options. Watch this space!
